Stale Questions

Questions where the answer may change as time goes by are what Quizzyland labels as 'time based questions'. Quiz creators have been permitted to date stamp their question with the words 'as of November 2001', especially with questions written in the present tense, so that the answer is fixed and cannot change. However, this date stamping creates questions which become stale as time goes by and, accordingly, date stamping of questions is no longer acceptable. The question must be reworded or completely rewritten so that it does not require a date stamp and, if it was written in the present tense, the tense may also need to be altered. If this is not possible the question must be removed and replaced, it will simply not work in an online environment. Some examples of a time-based/stale questions, and how they can be rewritten:

  • How many Oscars has she won, as of November 2001?
When she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in 'Titanic', it was her ___ th Oscar?

  • As of August 2002, how many days after the end of a quarter must a business lodge its GST return in Canberra?
In February 2002 the Federal Government amended the law to granted businesses an extension of time, on a permanent basis, to lodge their quarterly GST returns. They were previously required 14 days after the end of the quarter. The new laws moved the lodgement date forward to ______ days after the end of the quarter?

  • Who currently (as of August 2002) holds the record for hitting the most home runs in a season?
Who hit 73 dingers in the 2001 season to break the record held by Mark McGwire?

  • Finally, please avoid using the following words or phrases anywhere in your quiz: now, at the moment, this year, last year, next year, currently, present, next season, last season, will be, recently, latest etc. The use of any of these words or phrases (in the introduction, in a question or answer, or in the field 'Interesting Info about answer') will, in all likelihood, make your quiz time dependent.
