Liberia Trivia Questions

1. What does "Liberia" means?

From Quiz
Liberia: A Troubled Nation

Answer: Land of the free

Liberia means the land of the free as it was formed by freed slaves from the United States. Essentially, it is the United States of America that created this nation.

2. Who colonised the country in the early nineteenth century?

From Quiz Liberia

Answer: Former American slaves

The name of the country is perhaps a hint and the colonisation period may also have had something to do with the country's motto: "The love of freedom brought us here." The American Colonisation Society (founded in 1816) assisted in the 'repatriation' of former American slaves. A colony was established in what became Liberia and former slaves were sent there, regardless of where their roots actually lay.

3. On the list of recommended reading for my trip to Liberia was a book about a famous author's visit to the area in the 1930s. Which book was it?

From Quiz Living in Liberia

Answer: "Journey Without Maps" by Graham Greene

"Journey Without Maps" recounts the story of a 4-week trip Greene made with his cousin in 1935. He passed through Nimba County, where I worked, and his descriptions of the places he visited did not differ greatly from what I found in the late 1980s. This book proved to be the most accurate and informative preparation for living in the area. "Heart of Darkness" is a work of fiction set in the Belgian Congo where Conrad had worked. I read William Boyd's hilarious "A Good Man in Africa" when I was in Liberia and could recognise many of the characters and situations. Karen Blixen's "Out of Africa" is the story of her life in what is now Kenya in East Africa.

10. Taking its name from a spice, what name was given to the coast of Liberia by Portuguese traders?

From Quiz Liberia

Answer: Melegueta Coast

The trading in melegueta pepper gave rise to these names. The Portuguese preferred Melegueta Coast, whereas the British and Dutch often referred to the spice as "grains of paradise" and eventually used the Grain Coast for the area. Pepper Coast was another name used. but not by the Portuguese. The melegueta pepper is peppery in taste and has been used as a substitute for black pepper (from the Piperaceae family). The melegueta pepper is from the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. The similar sounding malagueta pepper is an unrelated chilli pepper from Central or South America.

11. Although Liberia was an established country in 1847, the United States did not formally recognize it as a sovereign nation. When did the United States finally recognize Liberia as an independent, sovereign country?

For some reason, the United States only recognized Liberia 15 years after they had their first president. This is quite unusual considering that they were the ones who formed the same nation.

18. In which perhaps surprising area of the economy is Liberia a highly ranked country?

From Quiz Liberia

Answer: Ship registries

Liberia produces all of these but it is as a flag of convenience that it nears the top of the world rankings. In January 2010, just over twenty-two per cent of all shipping tonnage was registered through Panama. Liberia's share was half of that. Flags of convenience help reduce operating costs, give owners some anonymity and allow them to avoid regulations of the owner's country, which no doubt helps to explain their popularity.

19. Who was the president of Liberia that started a revolt in 1989, and gained power in a special election in 1997? (In 2003, he faced charges from the UN International Court of Justice and resigned.)

From Quiz Liberia: A Troubled Nation

Charles Taylor was a descendant of the freed slave ruling class. Rebels wanted a return to democracy, so they wanted him to resign his power. This started (although there was a war long before) a heated civil war in his own country hampering its economy. He left the country and ceded the presidency in 2003.
