Vegetable Gardening Trivia Questions

1. For many, the first decision point is whether to plant hybrid, heirloom or both. What is a disadvantage of heirloom tomato plants?

From Quiz
My Tomato Garden

Answer: less disease resistance

Hybrid tomatoes are generally bred to be more disease resistant and to travel to market over longer distances. However, the seeds and/or plants for these will need to be purchased every year. If you did save the seeds and plant the following year, the plants would most likely revert to the parents of the hybrid plant. Heirloom tomatoes are open-pollinated so that the plants are the same year to year (as long as they don't cross pollinate in your garden). In addition, they are known for their varieties of both color and taste. These plants can require more care as they are more prone to pests and disease.

2. One reason tomatoes were initially thought to be poisonous is due to their family relationship. The tomato is a member of what plant family?

From Quiz You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Too!

Answer: Nightshade

While the leaves are poisonous, the tomato itself is not. The poison is called Tomatine. It is an alkaloid.

3. What disease do cucumber beetles spread?

From Quiz Vegetable Gardens

Answer: Bacterial Wilt

When the cucumber beetle attacks the plant, a milky liquid is formed in the plant, the leaves all wilt and die, and the entire plant dies eventually.

4. Another reason tomatoes were once thought to be poisonous is their scientific name of "lycopersicon esculentum". This translates to what?

From Quiz You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Too!

Answer: Wolf Peach

Werewolf myths from Germany are the starting point for the name of the wolf peach. As tomatoes are of the Nightshade family, they, also, were thought to be used to bring werewolves.

5. In the northern hemisphere, where is the best location to plant tall or climbing plants?

From Quiz Vegetable Gardens

Answer: North side of the garden

When the tall plants are planted on the north side, they don't block the sun from other smaller plants and also keep down the north winds.

6. Vegetable spaghetti is an unusual kind of which vegetable?

From Quiz The Variety of Vegetables

Answer: Marrow or squash

When a mature vegetable spaghetti marrow (squash) is boiled for about 20 minutes and then cut open, the flesh looks just like spaghetti. It is delicious with a tomato sauce!

7. What do tomatoes contain which helps fight "free radicals"?

From Quiz You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Too!

Answer: Lycopene

Lycopene aids in the prevention of certain types of cancer. Ketchup and tomato products are one of the best sources for lycopene.

8. The garden plot will need to be prepared. The plot should generally be located in a spot with eight hours of daily sun. When the soil is tested for pH, what values would be optimal?

From Quiz My Tomato Garden

Answer: 5.5 - 6.8

Tomatoes prefer the soil to be slightly acidic (a pH below 7). With preparation, the soil in your garden plot can be treated regardless of whether it might be too acidic or too basic. Lime can be added to a soil that is too acid, and alkaline soil can be amended to reduce the pH by the decomposition of compost and/or manure. As a side note, the amount of sun varies widely depending on where you are. In some areas the sun will be so strong that the plants will need shade during the hottest parts of the day. Or if the sun is weaker, the plants might benefit from being planted next to a wall or fence to soak up the sun during daylight hours and keep the soil warm at night.

9. Ailsa Craig is the name of a small island off the West coast of Scotland. It has given its name to a variety of which vegetable(s)?

From Quiz The Variety of Vegetables

Answer: Onion, Potato and Tomato

Ailsa Craig is off the coast of Ayrshire, Scotland. Ayrshire is very fertile and a lot of plant breeding has taken place there.

10. The tomato is considered a fruit. This is due to the place on the plant from where it grows. What is the name of the "birth place" of a tomato?

From Quiz You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Too!

Answer: Ovary

Tomatoes are technically berries if you look at them botanically. Fruit, vegetable now a berry. What an interesting plant.

19. Tomatoes which are more resistant to disease are called what?

From Quiz You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Too!

Heirlooms are tomatoes which have existed for more than 50 years and are considered to be "pure bred". They produce a variety of colors and shapes and some have swirls of color.

20. To prune or not to prune, that is the controversy. If you do prune, what is the term for what you are removing from the plant?

From Quiz My Tomato Garden

Answer: sucker

A sucker is the growth between the main stem and the branches on the tomato plant. It is generally believed that by pruning these on an indeterminate plant that there will be fewer fruit but they will be larger. It is also claimed that pruning allows for better air flow around the tomato, decreasing the humidity under the plant and reducing the possibility of some disease and pest problems. Many folk do not prune and have healthy plants with beautiful and tasty fruit.
