Divination and Tarot Trivia Questions

1. Which card represents indecision and retreat in the reverse orientation?

From Quiz
Tarot Cards - Name That Reading!

Answer: Seven of Wands - Lord of Valor

The Seven of Wands is one of fourteen cards in the Suit of Wands. When upright, the card represents successful advancement.

2. This fairy's name simply means "White Lady", a name given to many female fairies. She appears at birth bringing gifts and predicting the child's future.

From Quiz The Fairy Ring

Answer: Befind

Befind is always seen holding a spindle, accompanied by two other fairies who hold a measuring rod and shears. Similar to the fates the norns, who measure the thread of life, weave its pattern and cut the thread at death.

3. What suit of cards acknowledges feminine, spiritual, or emotional energies?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Cups

Cards in the "cups" suit always indicate that the effects of the card will occur spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically. They are considered feminine in the yin/yang sense of feminine, not that they have anything to do with women.

4. How many cards in the Tarot deck?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: 78

There are 22 cards (or keys) in the Major Arcana & 56 in the Minor Arcana for a total of 78.

5. Which suit of tarot cards indicates practical, material effects?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Pentacles

Pentacle cards always indicate practical, material, common-sense kinds of energies. You can think of them as "hobbit cards". The pentacle is used as a symbol of hardworking, practical energies because of the relationship of the pentacle to the earth in some forms of occult practice.

6. By what names are the two divisions of the Tarot deck known?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: Major and Minor Arcana

Arcana = keys, secrets.

7. What, according to Dorset beliefs, will happen at midnight on Midsummer's Eve if you set bread, cheese and beer on the table and leave the door open?

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: Your future husband will walk in the door.

Thomas Hardy wrote about this superstition in his novel "Under the Greenwood Tree". I remember hearing people claim they used to do this, but no one ever admitted to achieving the end result. Incidentally, the man need not walk in the door himself; it might very well be his "shade" which is supposed to be the form similar to a ghost of a living person that comes.

8. This fairy is from the Isle of Man whose name means "Fairy Love", "Fairy Sweetheart" or "Fairy Mistress". Since she is very seductive, few men can resist her charms, and as a lover she is very passionate, but her love comes at a terrible price.

From Quiz The Fairy Ring

Answer: Lhiannan Shee

The sole purpose of her existence is to find a human man to love her. Lhiannan Shee's embrace draws both life and breath from the human, while she becomes bright and strong. The Manx fairy sometimes takes blood, too, and is a true vampire.

9. Which series of cards indicate immediate action?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Knights

Knights mean action. Simple as that. Every suit means a different kind of action. The Knight of Wands means aggressive/sexual action; Swords means an action requiring analysis or intellect, for example a court case; Cups imply an action requiring emotional analysis or empathy; Pentacles represent an action in the everyday, or suggests that the action should be approached from a common sense view.

10. The four suits in the Tarot deck are: swords, wands, cups and what else?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: pentacles

Pentacles correspond to diamonds in our modern deck of playing cards and are associated with money and financial matters.

11. It is a long held belief that the Bible will give you an answer to any question you ask, including "Who will be my husband?" How do you get this answer?

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: Open the book at random and stab with your finger to find the relevant word.

This is a long held tradition. It is difficult to manage, though, because the answer is liable to be very cryptic. It is often only after the question has resolved itself that any connection with the quotation becomes evident.

12. What does the Strength card symbolize in the reverse orientation?

From Quiz Tarot Cards - Name That Reading!

Answer: Power wrongly used

The Strength card is one of twenty two cards of the Major Arcana. In the upright orientation it symbolizes self-control.

13. What is the name for the group of cards in the series' Kings-Queens-Knights-Pages?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Court Cards

They are called court cards. They work a bit differently from other cards, often times implying events external to the person. Face cards are what you call them in a normal deck of cards; baccarat is a game, and the "Pecto regalis" I just made up. Sorry.

14. Which suit of the Tarot is associated with emotions, love and happiness?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: cups

Cups correspond to hearts in today's modern deck.

15. A certain flower, picked on Midsummer's Eve and wrapped in a dry cool place, will keep fresh until Christmas. It can them be used in a ritual to elicit a proposal from the man you want to marry. What beautiful flower is this?

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: a rose

It is quite true that a rose can be kept till Christmas if stored in the right conditions of dry darkness. I have seen a whole arrangement of roses at Christmas that were preserved this way. The ritual is that the girl must take the rose and wear it over her bosom. She must than obtain a compliment from the man of her choice. Once he has done this he is doomed. Sometime during the coming year, he will propose to her. Well, who knows?

16. What are the numbered cards, e.g. the Four of Swords or the Nine of Cups, called?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Minor Arcana

The answer is Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana are the "named cards" you are probably more familier with such as Death, Moon, and the Hanged Man. Optimus Prime is the leader of the Transformers.

17. Which suit of the Tarot corresponds to the suit of spades in our modern deck of playing cards?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: swords

Swords are usually associated with misfortune and conflict. Wands correspond to clubs and signify activity and change.

18. The knight of which suit represents a stoic and indifferent person in the upright orientation?

From Quiz Tarot Cards - Name That Reading!

Answer: Pentacles & Knight of Pentacles

The Knight of Pentacles is also known as the Lord of the Wild and Fertile Land. In the reverse orientation it represents a greedy and grasping person.

19. Which card of the Tarot deck is often (almost always) numbered zero?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: the Fool

The Fool is said to represent the beginning and the end of the cosmic journey of the soul. It is both the Alpha and Omega, hence the zero (0) symbolizing the cyclical nature of the pilgrimage.

20. In the upright orientation, what does The Fool represent?

From Quiz Tarot Cards - Name That Reading!

Answer: Beginnings

The Fool is the very first card of the deck, number zero in the Major Arcana. In the reverse orientation it represents ill-advised risks.

21. This is an Irish elf who resembles a handsome gypsy. His name means "Love Talker". However, any woman who falls for him will pine away and die when he leaves - and he always does.

From Quiz The Fairy Ring

Answer: Garconer

He loves to seduce young women. Although many fairies have done this to earthly women and men, he seems to be the most interesting of them.

22. What card is ruled by Sylph?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: The King of Swords

The ruling spirit of a card has to do with it's suit, not really with what kind of card it is. Sylph is an air elemental and rules the Sword suit. Pentacles are ruled by Gnome; Wands are ruled by Salamander; and Cups (though not appearing in the question) are ruled by Undine. Not all tarot decks or practitioners use elementals in their readings.

23. Which card is incorporated in the album art of Led Zeppelin IV?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: the Hermit

The Hermit (key 9), representing Absolute Wisdom, seemed to be a personal symbol for guitarist Jimmy Page, himself a student of the occult. Chanteur means "singer" and is not a card in the Tarot deck. The Moon (key 18) is, however, as is Temperance (key 14) though I doubt Led Zep was much familiar with that term.

24. What would the young girls of Dorset expect to hear if they dug a hole on Midsummer Eve and planted it with hemp seed? The first mention of this that they heard and would give them some idea of their future prosperity.

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: the trade their future husband would follow

This is one of the superstitions that Thomas Hardy wrote about. This time it was in "The Woodlanders". He only mentions it in passing, but when I lived in Dorset I met an old spinster who claimed she had performed the ritual and next morning her mother had complained that the milkman was "dratted late". She claimed that that made her determined not to wed - she had no wish to get up in the middle of the night to see a husband off to work. Well, it was a better excuse than admitting that she had never had a proposal because she was known for a foul temper.

25. Which card represents the Child of the Forces of Time?

From Quiz Tarot Cards - Name That Reading!

Answer: The Devil

The Devil is the fifteenth card in the Major Arcana. In the upright orientation it represents a desire for material wealth, while in the reverse orientation it represents true evil. It also represents the Lord of the Gates of Matter.

26. This ritual, unlike most of them, can be performed on any day of the year. What articles of clothing must you lay in the shape of a T to see a vision of your future husband?

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: shoes

The rhyme goes like this - "I pin my garters to the wall, And put my shoes in the shape of a T In hopes my true-love for to see, Not in fine apparel nor in fine array, But in the clothes he wears each day. If I am his bride to be. If I am his clothes to wear, If I am his child to bear, I hope he'll turn his face to me. But if I'm not his clothes to wear, If I'm not his child to bear, I hope he'll turn his back to me." This is a bit ambiguous. A truelove was actually a man who had committed himself to you, so I suppose it could mean that, if he turned his back, even if he was currently your truelove, you would never actually marry him.

27. If someone asks you about a fight they've had with their significant other, and they draw the Four of Swords - What should they expect?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: A rest.

The Four of Swords often depicts a soldier at rest after battle, dead, or meditating (depending on your deck). This card represents an absence of battle, a time to regain your strength and prepare for what is ahead.

28. In the days when only men were supposed to propose, on which day could a spinster take the initiative?

From Quiz Who Will You Marry? - English Divinations

Answer: February 29th

As this came only once every fourth year, some girls determined to get the most out of it. If a girl planned to do this, she should have worn a scarlet petticoat. If the man refused the proposal, she should lift her skirt just high enough to prove that she was wearing one, and then demand that he provide her with a silk dress that would cover it. You might therefore assume that by accosting several men in turn, a clever girl could acquire a complete new wardrobe, with the only danger being that one of them might accept her!

29. In a Celtic cross style reading, which card is significant of the distant past of the asker?

From Quiz Tarot Terror

Answer: Position 3 (directly below the center cards)

In a Celtic cross, two cards are in the center, four cards are at each cardinal position around the two, and four others are on the right hand side. The four cards on the outside work in a clockwise pattern starting at the bottom, with the card furthest down being the distant past and the card at the right being the farthest in the future. The answer is Position 3, directly below the cards.

30. What is the term for the card used to represent the questioner during a reading?

From Quiz Intro to the Tarot

Answer: significator

Pallida mors and malis avibus are latin for "pale death" and "under evil auspices". Here, they are merely red herrings and have no bearing whatsoever on this subject. Thanks for playing!
