Fun Trivia
Julie Andrews was the original of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway and in the West End, along with Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins. He reprised his role in the popular movie based on this show, but she was replaced by Audrey Hepburn (with some singing voiced by Marni Nixon) because the producers wanted an established star for their film.

My Fair Lady - The Musical Trivia Questions

1. When "My Fair Lady" first opened on Broadway, who played the character of Eliza?

From Quiz
Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: Julie Andrews

Although all of these women have played Eliza at one time or another, Ms. Andrews did so first. Although she received rave reviews, it was felt she wasn't a well-known enough actress to play the part in the movie, a part later given to Audrey Hepburn.

2. What is Higgins' address?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: 27A Wimpole Street

London's Wimpole Street remains a highly respectable address to this day.

3. Who wrote the lyrics to 'My Fair Lady'?

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

Answer: Alan Jay Lerner

One of the 'Daddies' of lyric writers. He took hold of cockney London and made it his own. Likewise, the command of the English language and the use of rhyme in 'Why Can't A Woman' are unsurpassed.

4. According to Eliza, how much are French lessons per hour?

Answer: 18d

Eliza's friend took French lessons for eighteen pence an hour from a real French gentleman . . .

5. The character Doolittle, Eliza's father, is very rarely mentioned by his christian name. Can you tell me what it is?

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

Answer: Alfred P

He is, as I have been informed, called Alfred, twice! Once by Eliza when she berates him for asking for beer money. Once in the song 'I'm Getting Married In The Morning' when his mates try to get him out of the pub!

6. In "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," what does Eliza want her room to be far away from?

From Quiz Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: The cold night air

Like all of Eliza's early songs, it is sung in a Cockney accent, which is why it's "loverly" and not simply "lovely." One of the many things she says she wants is lots of chocolate, something Professor Higgins will later use to tempt her.

7. Where was Eliza's paternal grandmother from?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: Wales

I'm waiting to tell you, I'm willing to tell you, I'm wanting to tell you - that's the Welsh strain (according to Higgins anyway!).

8. Eliza is at the races in Ascot in all her finery. As the race comes to its exciting climax, what does Eliza shout out to the horse she has picked?

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

Answer: 'Move yer bloomin' arse!'

Having had a fresh strawberry tea with Duchesses, mixed with the upper class and dressed like a Princess, she forgets herself for one brief moment to cry out to the horse, 'Move yer bloomin' arse!'. I mean, what else could one say !

9. Higgins detects four different influences on Pickering's speech; where does he say Pickering is from?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: Cheltenham, Harrow, Cambridge and India.

Pickering had recently returned from military service in India - where he has taken a great interest in Indian dialects.

10. What is the name of the Colonel who partners Professor Higgins in his 'experiment' with Eliza?

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

Answer: Hugh Pickering

The delightful Wilfrid Hyde-White played Pickering as Prof. Higgins was to always call him. Pickering was an absolute gent. He was very British, very 'Club Tie' and always charming.

11. With her language mostly mastered, where do Higgins and Pickering take Eliza for her first try at blending into upper-class society?

From Quiz Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: Ascot Racecourse

Ascot is a real racetrack in the county of Berkshire, the same southern county in which Windsor Castle is located. It was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, and is still in operation.

12. Where was Pickering staying before Higgins invited him to stay with him?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: The Carlton

Upon being told this, Higgins replies, "No you're not; you're staying at 27A Wimpole Street."

13. What opera had been staged the night Pickering and Higgins met?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

"By George," exclaims Pickering, "that's a rackety one!"

14. What is the nationality of the phonetics expert at the Embassy Ball who used to be Professor Higgins' student?

From Quiz Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: Hungarian

He was Professor Higgins' best student, and deduces that Eliza's English is too good for her to actually be British, as the British are not taught their language very well. I wonder what he'd have to say about the way Americans speak it.

15. At some stage in her tutelage, Higgins takes Eliza to which seaside resort?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: Brighton

The only thing we learn about the outing is that Higgins bought a ring for Eliza while there.

16. Freddy pines for the love of Eliza and waits outside the house of Professor Higgins, where he sings 'On The Street Where You Live'. What street in London is where she lives?

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

Answer: Wimpole St.

Wimpole St. is today, still the area of professors, lawyers, doctors and specialists. But I don't think you'd find a Professor Higgins.

17. Alfred Dolittle, Eliza's father, gets a bequest for several thousand pounds a year, pushing him reluctantly into the middle class. How many thousands does he get a year? (Just the number, as in if it's one thousand, just answer "one.")

From Quiz Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: 4 & four

Alfred bemoans this fact, as his lover now wants him to marry her so she's respectable, and everyone is always asking him for money. He seemed to be happier when he was poor and completely free, whereas now he has to follow the morality and rules of middle-class society.

18. Who goes by the nickname 'Boozy'?

From Quiz My Fair Lady - under the microscope!

Answer: Brewster Budgin

From Quiz 'My Fair Lady' Vol. 1

George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play 'Pygmalion' was first made into a film by Gabriel Pascal in 1938, starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller. Then there was a stage show in 1956, and then the movie as we know it in 1964.

22. "My Fair Lady" is based on Shaw's play "Pygmalion." When the play was first performed in 1914, how did it end?

From Quiz Good Morning, Professor Higgins

Answer: With Eliza planning to marry Freddy

Shaw actually wrote an essay on why the ending had to be the way it was, and why Higgins and Eliza shouldn't end up together. He surprised everyone in 1938 when he changed his mind as he adapted the play into a film, and wrote the ending that is used for "My Fair Lady."

23. What is the Whitehall telephone number for the Home Office?
