Starlight Express Trivia Questions

1. Which character gets things going at the start of the show by singing 'Rolling Stock'?

From Quiz
'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: Greaseball

Greaseball is a smug and sexy show-off and claims to be 'the fastest thing you'll ever see'. He performs this song with the help of his gang.

2. "I'm just the fastest thing you'll ever see, That streak of_______ you just missed was me." What word is missing?

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Lightning

From the first song in the musical "Rolling Stock". This is where Greaseball is boasting that he is the best and will win all of the races.

3. Which song, removed after the rewrite, introduces the character of Rusty?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: Call Me Rusty

This song follows a scene in which Rusty is tormented by Greaseball and his gang. He states that despite his run down appearance, he still has ambitions to race in the tournament. The coaches, Ashley, Dinah, Buffy and Pearl laugh at him and tell him he's got no chance. (Sorry about the bad pun in the clue, by the way.)

4. Who originated the role of 'Rusty' in the West End production?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: Ray Shell

On the West End stage, Crawford originated the role of Phantom in 'The Phantom Of The Opera'. Ball originated the role of Alex in 'Aspects Of Love' and Wilkinson originated the role of Jean Valjean in 'Les Miserables'. Rusty is a steam train.

5. "Or worse they find you scattered in a ______ Rusty pieces round the track." What word is missing?

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Million

From "Call Me Rusty," the coaches are making fun of Rusty and the fact that he is going to race.

6. Which song does Pearl sing as an explanation of why she will not race with Rusty?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: He Whistled At Me

This one has a subtle difference between the old and new versions. 'He Whistled At Me' is Pearl's description of a dream she had in which she saw 'the perfect engine'. In the new version, 'He'll Whistle At Me' is Pearl's explanation of how she will know her ideal engine when he arrives. But of course it takes her until the end of the show to realise that it's Rusty she wants.

7. The late, great Stephanie Lawrence was the first actress to play which character?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: Pearl

Stephanie also appeared in 'Blood Brothers', 'Evita' and 'Cats'. Rusty is in love with Pearl but she has her eyes set on someone faster!

8. Which coach sings, "I've tried to kick the habit but my inside's used to tar?"

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Ashley

Ashley is the smoking car. She is the first coach that introduces herself in "A Lotta Locomotion."

9. After Pearl declines Rusty's offer to be his coach for the race, which carriage does Poppa suggest Rusty should take instead?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: Belle

Belle is an old sleeping car. She used to be glamorous, often compared to the Orient Express, but she is now peeling and old. She has experience, but as she points out, "the sad thing about experience is by the time you've got it, it's usually all you've got." (I chose Celeste as an option because it means 'star', and Voyd is the actress who plays Buffy in the 1993 album recording. Marie's just a random French name.) Sadly, Belle was cut from the show when it was rewritten.

10. Which coach describes herself as 'hot and cheap and quick'?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: Buffy

Buffy is the buffet car, Pearl is the observation car, Dinah is the dining car and Ashley is the smoking car. We learn this in the song 'A Lotta Locomotion'.

11. Which coach sings, "I'm hot and cheap and quick?"

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Buffy

Also from "A Lotta Locomotion" but I still am not sure what kind of coach she is.

12. Which coach was Greaseball's partner until he dumped her?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: Dinah

In the original version, he dumps her because she complains about his cheating. Later, in 'The Rap', he palms her off on Electra and takes Pearl, which leads Dinah to lament the fact that she's been 'U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.' In the new version, there is nothing leading up to her being given to Electra, so it hits her harder when Greaseball suddenly dumpd her for Pearl. She ends up with Electra, but leaves him because he cannot whistle at her.

13. Which character sings the song 'AC/DC'?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: Electra

Electra is decribed by Control as 'the engine of the future'. Electra agrees, singing, 'I am electric, the future is me'.

14. Which coach will "cook for you and listen while you lean upon my bar?"

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Dinah

Dinah is the dining car that is coupled with Greaseball until he dumps her.

15. Who is responsible for Rusty's failure to get through the final the first time?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: CB

CB, the Red Caboose, is a devious little.... swine. After Dinah is dumped by Greaseball, CB wastes no time in trying to 'console' her. During 'The Rap', he forms a plot with Greaseball and Electra. He will act as Rusty's coach, but will keep his brakes on so that Rusty is too slow. Between the first final and the rerun Dinah leaves Electra, so he is forced to take CB, and Rusty takes Dustin. Electra and Greaseball both crash, so Rusty wins by default. In the new version, Rusty gets a second chance because Greaseball pushes him off the track, but I'm not sure why he is allowed into the rerun in the original. CB was written out of the 1992 version, but has been reinstated for the 2004 tour.

16. Pearl has her own idea of the perfect partner, and at the start of the show Rusty doesn't fit the bill! Which song does she sing to explain why she is waiting for the perfect train?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: He Whistled At Me

Throughout the show Pearl is 'linked' to Rusty, Electra and Greaseball! She sees sense in the end when she realises Rusty is the one for her, and she sings 'Only He'.

17. Who is "gonna test them all until I find the best?"

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Pearl

Pearl is the new girl whose "springs still bounce" and "fans still whirl." She falls for Greaseball after he dumps Dinah and then she realizes that he has been cheating and that she really likes Rusty.

18. In the new version, Greaseball and Electra sing 'One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many'. Who sings it in the original version?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: Greaseball and CB

Greaseball and CB realise that they have gone too far in their desire to win. (In the 2004 tour, this song is sung by Greaseball, Electra AND CB.)

19. Which character sings the song 'There's Me'?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: C.B

C.B sings this song to Dinah. C.B is a very complex character, singing this beautiful love song to Dinah, but he also turns out to be responsible for some of the most famous train crashes in history!

20. "See me hustle. Feel my muscle. ________ ______." What two words are missing?

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: Pumping Iron

Another song where Greaseball is showing off. This time it is because he is a diesel train and all the coaches think that he can't lose.

21. After losing in the final, Electra vows to give up racing. Which song shows this?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: No Comeback

Talk about a bad loser! He didn't win, so he's going off in a sulk. Typical behaviour of a deflated show-off. (In case you're interested, 'this is the last time' is another line from this song, and 'No More' is actually a song from Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods'. As usual I made the last option up.)

22. "The Red Caboose would like to be of use to every truck." Who is the red caboose?

From Quiz "Starlight Express" Lyrics Act I

Answer: C.B.

C.B. helps Greaseball and Electra cheat by slowing Rusty down during one of the last races, but Rusty is able to race again and wins!

23. Which song is reprised by the coaches as an encouragement?

From Quiz "Starlight Express"

Answer: Rolling Stock

It comes after Dinah sings 'U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D'. Ashley and Buffy (and Belle, depending on which version it is) tell Dinah that the way to get Greaseball back is to act as though she does not want him. Personally, I'm surprised someone like Dinah can cope with that notion. She's not exactly the brightest of characters, is she? But somehow she pulls it off, and he comes crawling back to her, but she does NOT say "Go away you... nasty person" (sanitised version) as she promised at the end of U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.

24. Which song opens Act 2?

From Quiz 'Starlight Express' Fans

Answer: The Rap

'The Rap' features all of the lead characters arguing about whether or not Rusty should be allowed to take the place of Poppa who is no longer able to compete. At the end of the song Electra agress reluctantly that Rusty can race.
