This Sondheim musical was inspired by Georges Seurat's pointillist painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte'. The first act focuses on Seurat's painting, the second act on his (fictional) grandson, an artist also named Georges who is developing Seurat's technique of chromoluminarism (separation of colors to produce the impression of their combination).
