Fun Trivia
Here you will find quizzes on stage musicals whose titles start with the letter X, Y or Z, and for which we do not have enough quizzes to justify setting up a separate category for each one. If you find a favorite musical here, perhaps you'd like to write another quiz on it, so it can have a category of its own.

XYZ Trivia Questions

1. The title of this show uses a catchphrase of the times, and, like much of the show's content, reflects clearly the time in which it was set. When did it make its off-Broadway debut?

From Quiz
Your Own Thing

Answer: 1968

'Your Own Thing' is set firmly in the culture of the late '60s. It opened at the Orpheum Theatre in New York on 13 January 1968, and ran for 933 performances before closing in late 1969. Even while it was running in New York there were touring companies, and later versions ran in London and Sydney.

2. In what does Toad look funny?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: A bathing suit

Toad doesn't want the other animals to see him in a bathing suit.

3. 'Your Own Thing' is a comedy of mistaken identity, based on a play by Shakespeare. Like the original, it features a shipwreck in Illyria followed by some tangled romances. What was the title of Shakespeare's play?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: Twelfth Night

'Twelfth Night, or What You Will' is set in Illyria, as is 'Your Own Thing' - but this Illyria looks suspiciously like New York City. Shipwrecked twins get mistaken for each other in both plays, but 'Your Own Thing' eliminates much of Shakespeare's comedic subplot, stripping the performance down to a frenetic 90-minute show with only four main characters.

4. What does Frog give Toad for Christmas?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: A clock

At the beginning of the show, Toad breaks his alarm clock with his shoe. He is angry because the alarm has come on and ended hibernation. Throughout the show, he misses his clock. He is thrilled and surprised that Frog knew that is what he wanted.

5. What is unusual about Violet and Sebastian, the brother and sister who are shipwrecked in Illyria at the start of the play?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: They are referred to as identical twins.

The show, like Shakespeare's original, is based on the premise that nobody can tell which twin is which, despite the fact that one is male and one female. The production helped the illusion along by dressing both twins in orange bell-bottoms and loose-fitting yellow jersey tops with big off-centred zips to make them hang strangely on both characters. The actors dyed their hair the same shade of red, and casting was done to have them similar in height. Still, the audience was never in any doubt as to which one they were watching onstage at any given time!

6. Who delivers the letter that Frog writes to Toad?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Snail

All four choices are characters in the show, but it is Snail who delivers the mail. He moves so slowly that it takes him almost a year to get it from Frog's house to Toad's house, despite the fact that Frog is Toad's next door neighbor.

7. Viola is offered an audition for a rock band called Apocalypse. She is invited to replace Disease. Why does the group need to replace him?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: He has been drafted.

War, Death and Famine are quite glad they didn't have to go fight in Vietnam, and sad to see their friend go. Still, life goes on, so they need a replacement. Orson, their manager, arranges the auditions, and Viola is successful.

8. What does Toad bake?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Cookies

The cookies are so good that the characters can't stop eating them.

9. What name does Viola assume when she joins Apocalypse disguised as a boy?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: Charlie

Shakespeare had Viola assume the character of Cesario, which has been anglicized to Charlie. Nobody seems to notice that her voice is somewhat higher in range than the other singers in the band. Orson grows increasingly fond of Charlie, and finds these emotions confusing, especially as he is (he believes) already in love with someone else.

10. Who falls off the sled?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Frog

Frog falls off the sled when it hits a bump. When Toad realizes that Frog is not there, he is terrified to be on the sled alone. It goes faster and faster. It finally crashes into a snow bank.

11. To whom does Viola deliver a letter on behalf of Orson?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: Olivia

Orson is in love with Olivia, the owner of the nightclub where the band works, but she won't see him, so he sends Charlie to deliver a letter on his behalf. Viola departs, reluctantly, because she is aware of her growing fondness for Orson, as she expresses in 'She Never Told Her Love'.

12. After trying several times, what does Toad manage to do?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Fly a kite

The birds don't believe he will be able to get it off the ground.

13. What is the name of the frog that Frog says scared him when he was young?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Large and Terrible Frog

Frog tells Toad the story of the Large and Terrible Frog. Toad isn't sure he believes him.

14. One of the dynamics of the show is the age difference between the various lead characters. Viola and Sebastian are said to be twenty. How old are Olivia and Orson?

From Quiz Your Own Thing

Answer: Thirty

We learn their age in the song 'Middle Years', when Olivia sings, "He's twenty, I'm thirty, does it matter?" At the time, the phrase "Don't trust anyone over thirty" was common parlance, so this age makes them significantly part of the older generation, and increases the difficulty of sorting out the emotional entanglements.

15. When was the last time Frog was sad?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: April

During the summer, Frog goes to an island to be by himself. Thinking Frog is unhappy, Toad tries to cheer him up. He explains that sometimes he like to be alone and think about how happy he is. He mentions that he has not been sad since April.

16. What does Toad say he will do if a wolf is chasing Frog?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Hit him on the head with a big frying pan

Toad is convinced that something terrible has happened to Frog. He is determined to bravely rescue him.

17. What do Frog and Toad drink on Christmas Eve?

From Quiz A Year With Frog and Toad

Answer: Hot chocolate

They sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate.
