Fun Trivia
The English writer David Herbert Lawrence gained a reputation for writing that was banned as pornographic ('Lady Chatterley's Lover' springs to mind), but the artistic merit of his work has since been widely recognized. As well as the more familiar novels, he wrote a number of short stories (including the much-anthologized 'The Rocking-Horse Winner'), and nearly 1000 poems.

Lawrence DH Trivia Questions

1. Sir Clifford returns to Wragby Hall as the survivor of which war?

From Quiz
The Lover of Lady C

Answer: World War 1

World War Two: 1939-1945. Boer Wars: 1899-1902. Crimean War: 1853-1856. WW1: 1914-1918. It is the death of his older brother during The Great War that grants Clifford the family title, estate and business.

2. When does the story take place?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: early 20th century

Think about the way they are dressed, the horses, how London is described... it takes place before the First World War.

3. The village on Wragby's doorstep is called what?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Tevershall

It is rumoured amongst a few residents of Calverton, Notts., that there are only two towns of the name in all of Britain: their very own, and a second near Milton Keynes, Bucks. Worksop is a large town in Notts., as Bakewell is in Derbyshire. The latter has a famous tart named after it: the Bakewell Pudding. Tevershall is described in detail as the typical mining village. It is rough and filthy, with cobbled streets and a perpetual screen of smoke. Most working men are employed at the coal pit.

4. Where do the Brangwen sisters live?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: Beldover

Shortlands is the Crich's home, Willey Water is the little lake nearby, and Breadalby is Hermione's father's house.

5. The other colliery, not at Tevershall, is called what?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Stacks Gate

The Midlands are famous for, among other things, the massive coal seams which were extensively mined up until very recently. Derbyshire is also renowned for its cheese, cricket teams and well-dressing. Nottinghamshire is known as 'Robin Hood Country'. The colliers of Stacks Gate cause Mellors particular grief as they often poach in the forest at Wragby where he patrols. This brings many undesirable visits to the police station.

6. Who are the two main couples in the story?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: Ursula and Birkin, Gudrun and Gerald

Rupert Birkin is considered to be a self-portrait of Lawrence himself!

7. Lady Constance Chatterly is a native of what country?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Scotland

Scotland and England were united under King James I (VI of Scotland) upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. However, it was not until 1707 and the passing of the Act of Union that the two countries became linked by anything more than Royal blood. Connie's father is an artist, her mother died of cancer, and her sister is a mother of two.

8. What does Ursula Brangwen do?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: teacher

And her sister Gudrun is an artist.

9. Connie helped Mr. Mellors, the gamekeeper, to rear what?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Pheasants

'Pheasant' is a general term covering about 50 species of bird, including peacocks. The more familiar-looking pheasant is called, unsurprisingly, the 'common pheasant' or 'ring-necked pheasant' because the males have a white ring about their necks. All pheasants, except the Congo peafowl, originated in Asia. Mellors insures that there are enough pheasants for the hunting season by replacing chicken eggs with eggs from the wild. The mother hens never know the difference.

10. What happens at the end of the book?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: Gerald kills himself

11. Where do the two couples go on holiday?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: to the Alps

They go on a skiing holiday in the Austrian Alps.

12. Connie's 'code name' is Lady Jane. A part of Mr. Mellors' anatomy has a name of its own. This is?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: John Thomas

Lady Jane GREY was a cousin of Mary I and Elizabeth I. After the death of Edward VI in 1533, there was an attempt to place Lady Grey on the throne and use her as a puppet queen. This was foiled, and her Ladyship was executed in 1534. She had spent 9 days as Queen of England. According to most historical sources she had no desire to be monarch at all. Strangely, it isn't until much further into the book that Connie and Oliver Mellors even know each other's names. Upon discovering them, Connie decides it sounds odd. Mellors starts talking to 'John Thomas' in the next scene.

13. Poor Mellors had a beastly wife. What was her name?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Bertha Coutts

Supposedly, 9/10 people will marry, but approximately half of all first marriages are expected to collapse. http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/cb02-19.html was my source. Mellors eventually presses for divorce, but this brings Bertha scurrying back to his house and sets off a string of events that eventually leads to a happy ending.

14. When Gerald's father dies, who takes on the colliery business?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: Gerald

Gerald works really hard to keep the business going.

15. Connie accompanies her father and sister on holiday to which city?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: Venice

'Venice is situated on 120 islands formed by 177 canals in the lagoon between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers, at the northern extremity of the Adriatic Sea. Because of its historic role as a naval power and commercial centre, the city is known as the "Queen of the Adriatic".' - Encarta 2001 The two sisters drive there in Hilda's two-seater, but Connie leaves sooner than planned due to changes of circumstance for poor Mellors, who is still stuck in dreary England.

16. What is Winifred's Pekinese dog called?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence

Answer: Looloo

Bismarck is her rabbit's name, Laika is my dog's name and the other one, well, you know who that one is !

17. Where does Mellors end up working?

From Quiz The Lover of Lady C

Answer: On a general farm

Sheffield is famous for its steelworks. These factories sprung up in the area because of the close proximity to iron ore and coal. Nottingham is more closely associated with lace-making. Derby is renowned for Royal Crown Derby porcelain. Even though Connie has her own income, Mellors feels he needs to work to support at least himself, so he uses old army connections to secure a place on a farm where he can learn all there is to know about farming. The two plan to run a farm together, and baby makes three.

18. What is the title of the book that comes before 'Women in Love'?

From Quiz 'Women in Love' by D. H. Lawrence
