Fun Trivia
Sir Walter Scott is less well known for his day job (a lawyer, he was Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire) than for his historical novels, a genre he helped establish. He initially gained fame as a poet, before starting a series of novels set at various times in Scottish history. His best-known work, "Ivanhoe", was set in England, drawing on the legends of Robin Hood while dealing with the conflict between Saxons and the recently-arrived Norman conquerors.

3. Ivanhoe was disinherited by his father because of his allegiance to what ruler?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Wilfred

A fine old Anglo-Saxon name, I'm sure.

7. For what reason does our hero leave his post guarding the banner of England?

From Quiz The Talisman

Answer: He was told that Edith wanted to see him.

As it says in the book, "'Tis woman that seduces all mankind." In his defense, though, it was the woman he loved and adored. Who wouldn't have gone?

8. After his return from the Crusades, who provided Ivanhoe with armor and a horse?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

From Quiz The Lay of the Last Minstrel

Answer: Cold

The opening line of the introduction recognizes the day as long and the wind as cold.

11. What is the true identity of the Black Knight?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: King Richard

Richard had been held captive while attempting to return from the Holy Land. He escaped and was able to sneak back into the country before Prince John knew. (My rant: Richard is known as a heroic figure, but I don't like him at all -- he conspired against his father, spent a total of only 6 months of his ten-year reign in England, left it to founder under his brother John's rule, and neglected his poor wife, Berengaria of Navarre, terribly. That lovely lady, however, stayed faithful to him throughout their awful marriage and entered a convent upon his death. I suppose he was a great warrior, but it would seem much more noble to me to take care of his people and treat his wife a little more decently. There. I feel better now.)

12. What was the name of the king for whom the minstrel last played?

From Quiz The Lay of the Last Minstrel

Answer: Charles

The minstrel last played for King Charles the Good who had then lived in Holyrood. The palace at Holyrood was a mainstay for the kings and queens that stayed in Edinburgh, Scotland.

13. When Rowena, Rebecca, etc. were kidnapped, to whose castle were they taken?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Front-de-Boeuf

Torquilstone Castle had been Ivanhoe's until Prince John handed it over to Front-de-Boeuf. (I knew it wasn't a real translation, but I always thought of him as "Front of Beef"! I recently learned that his name means "Face of an Ox." And it serves him right.)

14. Who took care of the old minstrel when he entered Newark's tower?

From Quiz The Lay of the Last Minstrel

Answer: A Duchess

Anne, Duchess of Buccleuch, had her people take care of him because she knew what his pain was like. In payment, the minstrel sang her a song on his harp about a feud between her ancestors.

15. Who is a Knight Templar?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Brian deBois-Guilbert

They were a monastic military order formed to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. As with many other things, something is begun with good intentions, but ends up as something else altogether.

16. How was Conrad's innocence or guilt to be determined?

It was decided that if Conrad won, he was innocent. If he lost, however, he was guilty as charged.

18. Rebecca was put on trial by the Knights Templar. Of what crime was she accused?

20. Which two Earls did the minstrel speak of after he was rested?

From Quiz The Lay of the Last Minstrel

Answer: Earl Walter and Earl Francis

After the minstrel was rested, he told the Duchess of the times when he met and played for her father, Earl Francis and her grandfather, Earl Walter. He spoke of how the Duchess' ancestor hated Lord Crauston so greatly that she used magic to break up the relationship between her daughter and Crauston. However, her own evil was used against her and her son was stolen. Lord Crauston saved his betrothed's brother and Lady Margaret married Lord Crauston.

21. Richard's nickname was "Lionheart." What was John's nickname?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Lackland

The youngest of five sons, there wasn't any land left for him. But he wasn't bitter or anything...;)

22. Who did Edith really end up marrying?

From Quiz The Talisman

Answer: David, Earl of Huntingdon

Although Sir Kenneth and David, Earl of Huntingdon are technically the same person, Sir Kenneth is not an actual person. The name was just a cover-up so David (the Prince of Scotland, by the way) could join Richard on the Crusade without anyone trying to stop him. After the defeat of Conrad, Richard revealed Kenneth's true identity to everyone and David was finally allowed to marry his love, Edith.

23. Who did Cedric want to see as king of England?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Athelstane

Athelstane had royal Saxon blood. Cedric hoped to marry him to his (Cedric's) ward Rowena, also of royal Saxon blood. He wanted a Saxon on the throne, even though Athelstane was woefully incompetent. (It's kind of like how some people feel about their chosen political party candidates!)

The talisman was used several times to heal people throughout the book. Saladin gave the talisman to David and Edith as a wedding gift.

25. How did the minstrel acquire his food in "The Lay of the Last Minstrel"?

From Quiz The Lay of the Last Minstrel

The first stanza mentions that the minstrel begged for his food from door to door. The feud happened in the early years of the sixteenth century, but when the minstrel told the story to Duchess Anne, it was in the late seventeenth century.

26. During her imprisonment at Torquilstone Castle, who receives a marriage "proposal"?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Rowena

DeBracy strongly suggests that Rowena marry him. He threatens to "off" several people if she refuses. He eventually begins to respect her noble character and wishes she would accept him of her own will. Bois-Guilbert "proposes" to Rebecca, but marriage isn't part of the deal. He is a monk, after all!

27. Who does Ivanhoe marry?

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Answer: Rowena

He was very attracted to the beautiful and kind Rebecca but would not marry her because of her Jewish faith. He had been in love with Rowena for many years anyway.

28. In my little town, there's a small restaurant, somewhat famous for their wide selection of ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. What is the name of this restaurant? (And, yes, it's related to the topic!)

From Quiz I Vanna Know "Ivanhoe"!

Mmmmmm...ice cream...
