Answer:
He thought that Jack killed his brother-in-law.
Oscar Schaffer hired Jack to somehow stop his brother-in-law, Gus Castleman, from beating Oscar's sister (and Gus's wife), Ceilia. Jack had been watching the Gus and Ceilia through the windows of their home one night. All Jack was going to do was watch, but when he saw Gus start beating Ceilia and not stop, Jack felt that he had to intervene. Jack pretended to be a thief, but during the course of the confrontation, Gus revealed to Ceilia that he really hated her. Jack locked Ceilia in the closet while he knocked Gus around a bit, and then he tied Gus up and broke his legs. He then opened the closet before he left the house. Ceilia was so upset at finding out that Gus hated her, that she tortured and mutilated Gus, and Gus died from blood loss. Oscar thought that Jack had tortured, mutilated, and killed Gus.
