From Quiz
#10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: The Alchemists' Guild

At first, the technology was a closely guarded secret, but it had something to do with salamanders, imps, and octo-cellulose. Some of the alchemists in the Guild were concerned about how the wizards would react; they were opposed to non-wizards using any form of magic. Thomas Silverfish (president of the Alchemists' Guild), however, was adamant that moving pictures didn't use magic at all.

2. What is the name of Deccan's book found by Victor?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Holy Wood was built on a vast expanse of sand next to the ocean. People were inexplicably drawn to the area to be part of the 'clicks', but at first, Victor had never heard of the place. After watching a moving picture for the first time, he decided to give acting a go and set off for Holy Wood.

5. The thought of what object causes Gaspode to wake up from the dream caused by the spirits of Holy Wood?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

6. What confectionery did Peavie invent?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: Banged Grains

According to Silverfish they taste like cardboard, yet somehow you just can't help taking another handful.

7. What do the wizards attempt to disguise themselves as when they attend the moving pictures show?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: Honest merchants

Honest merchants? In Ankh-Morpork? This just shows how out of touch the wizards are with the world outside the University walls. They put hooks over their ears to make the beards look fake. When they later try to convince someone they really are wizards, he points out that can't be wizards, he can see their fake beards.

8. Who did Detritus fall in love with?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: Ruby

It is believed to have been her influence which made Detritus become the City Watch's first troll guard. Diamanda was the leader of a coven of young girls in Bad Ass, ( until Granny Weatherwax found out that is ) Serafine is Angua's mother, and Eskarina of course was the Disc's first female wizard.

9. Which creatures were used to create moving pictures on the Discworld?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: Imps and salamanders

The clicks definitely did NOT use magic. Absolutely not. By no means. Not at all. The imps weren't magic, 'just ordinary occult', according to Silverfish. And the salamanders were 'perfectly normal natural history'. The wizards had nothing to complain about... Victor wanted to know how the picture box worked so a handleman opened one up and explained. There were six imps inside: two to paint the scene and four to blow on it to get it dry. Every time the handle was turned, a new sheet came down for the demons to paint on, and a whip was whirled around to make them paint fast enough.

10. Gaffer is a member of which Guild?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: Guild of Handlemen

Any time a new industry pops up in Ankh-Morpork, a Guild is created almost simultaneously. Since the Guild is new, they're just handing secrets around, but give them a few years and they'll be handing them down from initiate to initiate.

11. What screen name did Ginger adopt?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: Delores De Syn

Theda Withel is Ginger's real name.

12. Which enterprising Discworld regular found success as a producer in 'Moving Pictures'?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler

Got any elephants to spare? Dibbler believed that bigger was better. No expense was spared; the money would come rolling in once the tickets went on sale. With careful renaming of the cast and by taking liberties with advertising, the former sausage-seller had audiences eating out of his hand.

13. What was unusual about Gaspode the Wonder Dog?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: He could talk

Smells like an old privy carpet and has a fine collection of doggy diseases, including Licky End. Sleeping against the walls of the High Energy Magic Building at the Unseen University where magic constantly seeped out was responsible for Gaspode's ability to talk.

14. Laddie was the canine star of the clicks, but what was the name of the real 'wonder dog' who could think and talk like a human?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: Gaspode

Gaspode was one of the animals under the spell of Holy Wood. He wasn't much to look at, but the magic of the clicks had granted him the power to reason and to speak. He received some puzzled looks when others caught him doing uncanine things and he covered his tracks by saying, "Woof!"

15. What is the name of the outer-dimensional monster whose distinctive cry is 'Yerwhatyerwhatyerwhat'?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: Yob Soddoth

This is one of the questions Victor asks Ponder while they are studying for their Finals. Tshup Aklathep, Inferal Star Toad with A Million Young tortures its victims by holding them down and showing them pictures of its children until their brains implode. Bel Shamharoth appears in the first Discworld novel, "The Colour of Magic". Binky is, of course, Death's horse.

16. What click was being shown in Ankh-Morpork?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

'A Passionate Saga Set Against the Background of a World Gone Mad! This Will Amaze You! With a Thousand Elephants!' ( Quote taken from the front sleeve of the book )

17. In 'Moving Pictures', which tasty snack could customers purchase while watching a click?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: Banged grains

Banged grains were another alchemist's invention. Although they were edible, they were pretty tasteless. Luckily, a little sugar and salt made them more palatable and people began buying them by the bucket. When the Dean of Unseen University entered The Odium for the first time (in disguise, of course), he ordered six Patrician-sized tubs of the stuff.

18. What was the name of the place that the moving pictures were filmed?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: Holy Wood

Legend has it there was a city here once that was destroyed by the gods for unspeakable crimes. Fir Wood Studios and Floating Bladder Pictures were production companies. Vinebud Studios is just a figment of my imagination.

19. The premiere of 'Blown Away' was underway at The Odium in Ankh-Morpork. What unexpectedly climbed out of the screen?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: Giant versions of the main characters

The audience was mesmerised. Gaspode had to resort to the cold, wet nose trick in order to arouse Victor. The leading man tried to interrupt the film, but a huge, flickering version of the leading lady emerged from the screen nevertheless. The audience awoke in the presence of visitors from the Dungeon Dimensions. The unthinkable creatures were using the enlarged shapes of Ginger and Victor to enter the Discworld.

20. To what did Dibbler change the name of Silverfish's "Interesting and Instructive Films"?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: Century of the Fruitbat Moving Pictures

That is not a typographical error. There really was a studio called "Untied Alchemists". Most of the Discworld books take place during the Century of the Fruitbat, which was then followed by the Century of the Anchovy. Because Holy Wood was destroyed there is no concern about changing the name.

21. When Victor and Ginger discovered the old cinema, who did Ginger say the sleeping man reminded her of?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: Uncle Oswald

Even though she only saw her Uncle Oswald once. At his funeral.

22. The Odium wasn't the only cinema on the Discworld - Holy Wood had a much older establishment. What travelled through the screen to fight the creatures on the other side?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: A golden warrior

The dilapidated cinema in Holy Wood had a huge screen that wasn't quite right. Creatures from the Dungeon Dimensions were trying to get through it for a start, not to mention the odd way it looked. Luckily, a giant, golden statue of a warrior awoke from the depths of the auditorium to battle the monsters.

23. According to Gaspode, when will be the right time for Victor to tell Dibbler he wants a "per-cent-age of the gross"?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: When he's got a mouthful of food

We never find out if Victor gets it.

24. When the giant Ginger was scaling the Tower of Art, who was she clutching in her hand?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's 'Moving Pictures'

Answer: The Librarian

The librarian of the Unseen University was transformed from a human to an orang-utan by a magical accident and has refused all attempts to change him back again. Even if you are not familiar with any of the Discworld novels you cannot fail to see the parody in this sketch.

25. At the end of 'Moving Pictures', Sergeant Colon was witness to a delivery at the gates of Ankh-Morpork. What was it and who was it for?

From Quiz #10 'Moving Pictures': The Magic of Cinema

Answer: A thousand elephants for Dibbler

Dibbler wanted his clicks to be bigger, louder, better! He came up with some ludicrous ideas for stories "set against the background of a world gone mad". He wanted the "Moving Picture to End all Moving Pictures". It would have romance, battles, trolls, and women slapping people's faces! There would be a city on fire and a thousand elephants! Unfortunately, the movie industry collapsed after the incident with the Dungeon Dimensions. Dibbler lost all of his money and went back to selling sausages. But no one remembered to cancel the shipment of elephants...

26. What was Riktor the Tinkerer's nickname?

From Quiz 'Moving Pictures' Random Questions

Answer: Numbers

Archchancellor Ridcully remembers him as 'Numbers' Riktor. He built the resograph (lit.: "thingness-writer", a device for detecting and measuring disturbances in the fabric of reality) which begins terrorizing the staff at Unseen University. When the Bursar discovers what it is Riktor's writings say in serious disturbances two pellets will be expelled several inches in the course of a month in the direction of the disturbance. While he is reading this eight pellets are expelled into the sandbags heaped around it. This was happening every five minutes.
