Snuff Trivia Questions

1. Ah, Quirm! Marvellous food, over there. If only they wouldn't use so much of ... of what?

From Quiz
Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: Avec

Wow-Wow Sauce is a favourite condiment of Mustrum Ridcully, UU. Sheep's Eyeballs is one of the rather hilarious foods served in Klatch. The Meat-pie floater can be found in Fourecks, as Rincewind could tell you at the speed of beer. 'Avec' is generally (over-) used in Quirmian food, much to the distress of many of Ankh-Morpork's citizens.

2. While exploring the property, Vimes came across Hangman's Hill. Which one of Sybil's Ancestors had it raised 30 feet to win a drunken bet?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Mad Jack Ramkin

When describing the bet, Wilikins called him "Black Jack" Ramkin, however he is mentioned as Mad Jack Ramkin at other time within the book. The bet was that he could see the smoke from the city on his estate. After being told by a surveyor that the hill was 30 feet too short, He rallied all the working men in the area to raise the hill by the aforesaid thirty feet. Mad Jack got 2 gallons of brandy for winning this bet. Woolsthorpe had an apple fall on his head, and proved the hypotesis that what goes up must come down, provided that what goes down must come up. This however was only because the apple tree was a "Malus equilibria" which fills apples near the top of the tree with gas when it is disturbed as to send its seeds some way away. Turnip Ramkin invented the seed drill and Rubber Ramkin devised rubber boots and rubberized fabric, even before the dwarfs.

3. When you wish to say 'hallo' to a person of the goblinish persuasion, what do you utter?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: Hang!

Yes, the goblin variant of 'hi' is 'hang!'. Sounds weird, but, after all, there's only a limited number of syllables in the world, right?

4. Every pub has the equivalent of three old men sunning themselves outside and ready to talk to strangers about the good old days, what were the names of the three who were outside the Goblin's Head?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Tom

They are triples, known as Long Tom, Short Tom and Tom Tom; Tom being a family name as their dad was called Tom also. Having them all called Tom might save some confusion, seeing as they are easily confused.

5. One of the favourite authors of Young Sam is called Miss Felicity Beedle. What is the (unofficial) nom de plume given to her by Old Sam?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: The Poo Lady

Sam Vimes calls her the Poo Lady because apparently most of Miss Beedle's books revolve around poo like flies around ... well, around poo. Some examples of her great literary works include 'The World of Poo' and 'Geoffrey and the Land of Poo'. Great reading!

6. When Vimes first meets Stinky, he is reminded of a hobby which is now flourishing back in Ankh-Morpork, what is this hobby?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Stink-collecting

Stinky had come to the lock-up to try and get the po-leess-maan to help bring just ice for the murder of The Pleasant Contrast of the Orange and Yellow Petals in the Flower of the Gorse. Stink-collecting came to mind while meeting Stinky since he had just landed on Vimes's lap after being attacked by Feeney Upshot, and goblins stink with all the stinks possible by an organic creature could make. Dave's Pin and Stamp Emporium was extending the sign over his shop to include stinks.

7. When Sam Vimes and the blacksmith Jethro Jefferson are about to engage in a friendly bout of fisticuffs, Jethro refuses to do it by the rules as set down by ... by whom?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: The Marquis of Fantailer

The Marquis of Fantailer's rules for fisticuffing state, for example, that you should treat your opponent with respect and fairness. Consequently, you are not allowed 'to put your boot in' once the other bugger's down. Sam Vimes is, understandably, no friend of the Marquis' way of fighting. He knows that many a dying man's last words were 'Damn that Marquis of FantARGH!'

8. Vimes, to his own astonishment, is floored by constable Feeney Upshot. What close combat move does Upshot use?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: One Man He Up Down Very Sorry

When constable Upshot tries to arrest Vimes because of his possible involvement in the disappearance of the blacksmith Jefferson, Vimes tricks Upshot into giving him his official truncheon. Vimes, in the face of the young, unarmed police officer feels quite safe now. What he doesn't know is that Feeney's granny, Ming Chang, came from Bhangbhangduc. Subsequently she taught the family two important domestic skills: cooking and fighting.

9. When visiting Miss Beedle, she gives Young Sam a bound proof of one of her books, which one was it?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: The Joy of Earwax

All four books were written by Felicity Beedle and mentioned though the book. Miss Beedle also offered to sign it for Young Sam, however when he received the book he said "Please don't scribble on it, I'm not allowed to scribble in books."

10. Sam Vimes is able to see in absolute darkness within the goblin cave. Who or what enables him to do so?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: The Summoning Dark

The Summoning Dark is assumed to be quasi-demonic entity which has gained access to Vimes' mind. Despite being millions of years old, it isn't able to lure him into darkness. Vimes has, in his mind, created the Guarding Dark as a counterpart to the Summoning Dark. This allows him to draw on the power of darkness unharmed. (Please read 'Thud!' for more detailed information on the concept of living, and possibly breeding, darkness.)

11. In the mob in front of the lock-up, what causes Mrs Upshot's broom to break into two pieces?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: An arrow

The arrow in question was a custom-made bolt for the Burleigh and Stronginthearm Piecemaker Mark IX. There are apperently only three of them were made, two of which are under wizard assisted lock and key in the company's vaults. The other one is in a little vault in the cellar of Vimes's house in Anhk-Morpork, with concrete poured over it and dirt hiding the exact spot of where it is buried. How one was able to get out to the country is 'unknown to Vimes and Willikins.'

12. Captain Sillitoe expertly rides a dam slam on Old Treachery. On what ship does he accomplish this feat?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: The Wonderful Fanny

Sam Vimes reasons that probably the owner's wife was called Franceska. This, being rather a mouthful, led to the abbreviated Fanny. En al Sams la laisa, for those who care, is translated as 'the place where the sun shineth not (please take a look at Sir Pratchett's 'Jingo' for more context).

13. After falling through a through a tarpaulin while jumping between the barges of the Fanny, Vimes meets Mr False, what occupation does Mr False have?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Breeder of complicated chickens

Mr False's full name was Praise and Salvation False. He tried to explain why his name was false, however he was interrupted by Vimes because he could complete the explanation. From what we have is his family originated in Klatch with a name of Thalassa, and over time people tend to mispronounce it. The Chickens are complicated since they lay square eggs, it is not made clear if they have any other complications.

14. Which goblin performed at the Ankh-Morpork Opera House, helping to establish goblins as sapient creatures.

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Tears of the Mushroom

Billy Slick is a goblin who works for Harry King in Ankh-Morpork (goblin name Of the Wind Regretfully Blown). The Cold Bone Wakes is the name of the head goblin in the cave system visited in the book. Stinky is a special officer of the police force in The Shires, after being promoted to that position during the book. Tears of the Mushroom was one of Miss Beedle's star pupils in the goblin cave. She played "Twilight Serenade" on her harp for the masses of people that were watching in the Ankh-Morpork Opera House.

15. Mr Willikins is responsible for the demise of Mr Stratford. What can be considered to be the gentleman's gentleman favourite, dangerous household item?

From Quiz Mixed Pouch of Snuff

Answer: A steel comb

The steel comb, as we now know, can be quite lethal when wielded by Mr Willikins. As we also know, the description 'gentleman's gentleman' contains two lies when applied to Mr Vimes and Mr Willikins. By the way, I assume that the Soul-Eater might also be deadly in Willikins hands. But I'm not sure if it can actally be called your common household item.

16. When Sam Vimes came on holiday again, which boat was he allowed to steer all the way to Quirm?

From Quiz Snuff Stuff

Answer: Black-Eyed Susan

As the saviour of the fanny, Vimes had been proclaimed King of the River. After he finished his first holiday, he was allowed to steer the Black-Eyed Susan part of the way back to the hall. On that occasion Vimes was as happy as a cat full of sixpences, the second time they had to find another cat full of sixpences for Vimes to be as happy as.
