The Light Fantastic Trivia Questions

1. 'The Light Fantastic' followed on from Rincewind and Twoflower's adventures in 'The Colour of Magic'. At the beginning of 'The Light Fantastic', where on the Disc were the two of them?

From Quiz
#2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: They weren't on the Disc; they were falling off the edge of the world.

The reason that Rincewind and Twoflower were no longer on the Disc is a little complicated and you'll find the best explanation in 'The Colour of Magic'. Basically, the wizard and the tourist persistently failed to die, which was annoying Fate. Fate, being a god, made a deal with the Krullians: if they sacrificed Rincewind and Twoflower, he would ensure that the Discworld's first space explorers would have a safe journey. In order to avoid a sacrificial death, Rincewind and Twoflower escaped. The problem was, they escaped into the spaceship that was about to be launched off the edge of the world. Well, strictly speaking Twoflower was in the capsule. Rincewind and the Luggage were plummeting off the Discworld behind him.

2. This novel focuses mainly on two sets of characters - Rincewind and his companions, and the wizards of Unseen University. Who is the head of Unseen University at the start of 'The Light Fantastic'?

From Quiz The Opposite of Darkness

Answer: Galder Weatherwax

In this book, Galder Weatherwax is referred to as the "304th Chancellor of Unseen University", whereas in later books the head of the University is generally referred to as the "Archchancellor". Galder is succeeded later on in 'The Light Fantastic' by Ymper Trymon. As for the other two options, Mustrum Ridcully is a later Archchancellor of Unseen University and Alberto Malich (also known as Albert, Death's servant) was the founder of Unseen University.

3. What is the first thing that Rincewind speaks to?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic

4. Why did Bethan feel reluctant about being saved from the sacrificial altar?

From Quiz 'The Light Fantastic' Random Questions

"I could have been up there with the Moon Goddess by now, drinking mead out of a silver bowl. Eight years of staying home on Saturday nights right down the drain!"

5. What is the name of the spaceship in which Twoflower and Rincewind first make their appearance in this book?

From Quiz The Light Fantastic

6. One of the most dangerous books on the Disc - the Octavo - was chained up somewhere. Which building was it securely locked inside?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: Unseen University

With its tatty leather cover, the book didn't look impressive from the outside. Inside, however, it held seven of the most dangerous spells. Spells that were believed to have been first used by the Creator. The eighth spell was not in the book; it was in Rincewind's head. The Octavo went to great lengths to ensure that its final spell did not plunge off the edge of the Disc.

7. At the beginning of 'The Light Fantastic' which magical book, chained down in a magic-proof room, only contains seven spells?

From Quiz The Opposite of Darkness

Answer: 'The Octavo'

The eighth spell 'The Octavo' previously contained had planted itself inside Rincewind's mind, and constantly tries to get itself said in difficult situations. He evicts it near the end of 'The Light Fantastic', making it go back inside the book.

8. Inside The Unseen University, Galder and several other wizards conducted a summoning. Who was summoned?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic

Answer: Death

The wizards summoned Death, who was at a party prior to the summoning.

9. When Rincewind is in the grove of talking trees, he kicks one. What does it drop on his head?

From Quiz 'The Light Fantastic' Random Questions

Answer: An acorn.

The short conversation that follows eventually led to a tree religion. "Its tenet of faith was this: a tree that was a good tree, and led a clean, decent and upstanding life, could be assured of a future life after death. If it was very good indeed it would eventually be reincarnated as five thousand rolls of lavatory paper."

10. And what is Twoflower, the Disc's first tourist, doing inside the spaceship?

From Quiz The Light Fantastic

Answer: Enjoying the view

As per usual, he is totally oblivious to all danger, and is safe in the knowledge that Rincewind will save him...Poor man!

11. With the help of Swires the gnome, Twoflower and Rincewind found a cottage in the woods. What was unusual about it?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: The walls were made of nougat.

Swires led the two travellers to a gingerbread cottage in the forest, a relic of the Confectionary School of Architecture. A strong magical field meant that the house could regenerate when someone took a bite out of it. Which is just what the hungry men did. The walls were indeed nougat, the door knocker was licorice, and the bed was made of toffee. Watch out for the doormat; it's candyfloss.

12. According to the book, what is a Thaum?

14. Twoflower was poisoned in a battle and Cohen the Barbarian declared that he had 'gone'. Where did Rincewind go to get him back?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: Death's house

Bethan was about to be sacrificed by druids and Twoflower wanted to rescue her. Cohen also wanted to steal the druids' treasure. In the battle that followed, Twoflower was poisoned and ended up in Death's house, where Rincewind found him teaching Death and his anthropomorphic colleagues how to play bridge. Death's garden was well kept with an array of black, purple, and white flowers. It had a marble path and a freshly-scythed lawn. The cottage itself had Early Crypt decorations and was much bigger on the inside.

15. Rincewind and Twoflower go to a number of places on their journey around the Discworld, one of which being the Forest of Skund. What is the direct translation of the word "Skund"?

From Quiz The Opposite of Darkness

Answer: "Your Finger You Fool"

So named because explorers completed their maps by "grabbing the nearest native... and writing down whatever the bemused man told them." "Who is this Fool who does Not Know what a Mountain Is" is the direct translation of Mt. Oolskunrahod, also to be found on the Disc.

19. After escaping from the homicidal Ysabell, which book of spells did Rincewind appear inside?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: The Octavo & Octavo

The Octavo was not like other spell books: it was much more powerful. The seven spells had brought Rincewind inside its pages to explain why they were trying very hard to ensure no one said them out loud. The wizards of Unseen University had assumed that the approaching red star was going to collide with the Disc. They planned to say the eight spells (the seven in the Octavo and the one in Rincewind's head) to prevent the end of the world. They had assumed wrong.

20. According to the Troll's legend, what are the Trolls instructed not to do when Rincewind comes looking for onions?

The legend states that "When the red star lights the sky Rincewind the wizard will come looking for onions. Do not bite him. It is very important that you help him stay alive."

21. When the Horse Tribe necromancer is reading the Caroc cards, which character appears on the Death card?

23. Twoflower and Cohen the Barbarian had been kidnapped by a band of barbarians. Which troll did the barbarians manage to annoy?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: Old Grandad

Twoflower and Cohen were being kept captive in the mouth of a cave. Except it wasn't actually a cave mouth: it was a troll mouth. Old Grandad had spent too long philosophising and had turned into what looked like a cliff face. The barbarians, thinking themselves clever, had lit a fire to keep man-eating trolls away. Rincewind, who was hiding in the shadows nearby, pointed out to them that the fire would be ineffective in keeping trolls away, as it had been lit in the mouth of a particularly huge one.

24. Which ruler of Ankh-Morpork objected to inaccurate descriptive writing?

From Quiz The Opposite of Darkness

Answer: Olaf Quimby II

Vetinari is the Patrician in most of the Discworld novels and has an objection to mime artists, but it was Olaf Quimby II who objected so much to inaccuracies in descriptive writing that he would have offenders executed.

25. What time period was given when describing when Old Grandad was last seen?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic

Answer: Centuries

"He's very old and big and mean. We haven't seen him about for years," said Kwartz. "Centuries," corrected Beryl.

26. What game does Twoflower teach Death?

From Quiz 'The Light Fantastic' Random Questions

Answer: Bridge

Actually, the game is never identified as bridge, but all the clues point to that game. Twoflower: "In your language it's called a thing you put across a river, I think." Rincewind: "Aqueduct? Fishing Line? Weir? Dam?" Twoflower: "Yes, possibly." Bridgeplaying friends of mine claim that "Dam" would be a better name for the game since they use that word so often.

27. The Rite of _________ is the rite in which Death is summoned.

From Quiz The Light Fantastic

Answer: Ashk-Ente & AshkEnte & Ashk Ente & Ash Kente & Ash kente

28. The towns were overrun with people panicking about the apocalypse. Twoflower, Rincewind, and Bethan managed to escape a mob by entering which type of establishment?

From Quiz #2 'The Light Fantastic': Dance Around the Disc

Answer: A wandering shop

The three of them were cornered in an alleyway when a door appeared in the wall. It was the kind of shop that sold weird and useless things, and when you went back the next day it had vanished. Not closed for the afternoon or no longer in business, but gone - front door, windows, and all. Almost as soon as the trio had rushed inside, the door vanished and the shop was en route to its next location. The wandering shops were also known as tabernae vagnates. One theory for their existence was that they were invented by a capitalist species to maximise profit. Another suggested that they were created by Fate to supply 'exactly the right thing at the right time'. The final theory argued that the shops were a sneaky way of getting around Sunday trading laws.

29. Flying along on a broomstick, Rincewind and Twoflower hit a big rock in the sky, apparently inhabited by a druid named Belafon. What was Belafon's occupation?

From Quiz The Opposite of Darkness

Answer: Computer hardware consultant

The big rock was a replacement for part of a stone circle. The stone circle could tell you things like what season it was and so on. Belafon was somewhat unimpressed when Twoflower informed him that they had a book ('The Almanac') that could do the same thing, much more simply.

30. When Gancia (one of Herrena's men) leaped for the gold in the Luggage, what did the Luggage do to him?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic

The Luggage's lid snapped shut and ate him. Weems then witnessed the Luggage brushing its tongue along its teeth.
