Of Mice and Men Trivia Questions

1. "Whatever we ain't got, that's what you want. God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy." Who said this?

From Quiz
"Of Mice and Men" Quotes

Answer: George

Lenny had asked for ketchup to go with his beans, but they didn't have any. Lennie asked again, and George got mad at him.

2. Lennie's surname is 'Small'. Why is this ironic?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men

Answer: Because he is a huge man

Lennie's surname being 'Small' is ironic because he is a huge figure of a man, and also because he has a (figuratively) small brain. Carlson considers this during the third chapter. In addition, it seems Steinbeck has given these characters names and surnames for a reason, eg. Curley has curly hair; Crooks has a crooked back; Curley's wife has no name.

3. Lennie Small is a big, childish man. He travels around with his companion. What is his companion's name?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: George

Lennie Small and George Milton are migrant workers, they travel around together looking for work on ranches.

4. What is Lennie's surname?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"

Answer: Small

In "Of Mice and Men" it is quite humourous that such a physically large man like Lennie has the surname Small. Indeed Carlson certainly seems to think so. On meeting George and Lennie for the first time he says "Glad to meet ya," which is followed by "He ain't very small...Ain't small at all." Considering the damage Lennie does throughout the course of the novel, crushing Curley's hand, accidentally killing his puppy and of course, killing Curley's wife, it becomes more and more apparent that he is in fact, anything but "small". Therefore his surname, is unavoidably ironic, which seems to have been Steinbeck's intention.

5. Candy has a pet in the novel who is his companion; what type of animal is it?

From Quiz Candy, in 'Of Mice and Men'

Answer: Dog

Candy has a dog in the novel, a dog which seems to be incredibly similar to its owner. It is old and, at the beginning of the book (in chapter 3) is killed because it is useless and in pain. This death signifies two key things, firstly, Candy's own fears at being disposed of when he is no longer useful and secondly, Lennie's death because it is the best thing that can be done for him. The reader also sees the violent life that people living on ranches had.

6. How much money was given to Candy after he lost his hand?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: $250

Candy is an old swamper who befriends Lennie and George. He only has one hand because he lost his other in an accident. He is willing to give George and Lennie his money for their house if he can come and live with them.

7. Which river did George and Lennie stop at to take a drink after running from Weed?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"

Answer: Salinas

Lennie and George, the lovable duo, had to run from Weed because of Lennie's fascination with a woman's red dress.

8. Why were George and Lennie chased out of Weed?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Lennie touched a girl's dress

It's not as crazy as it sounds. Lennie wanted to touch it because he thought it looked really pretty. The girl got scared and screamed, and Lennie just held on more tightly. Of course everyone thought Lennie had harmed her so they had to escape before they got lynched.

9. Who wrote 'Of Mice and Men'?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: John Steinbeck & Steinbeck & J Steinbeck

He also wrote 'The Grapes of Wrath' which was one of his most popular books.

10. 'O.k. Machine. I will talk to you later. I like Machines.'?

From Quiz 'Of Mice and Men' Quotes

Answer: Curley's wife

She says this after the men tell her that a machine crushed Curley's hand when Lennie crushed it. Machine is capitilized to let the reader know that she knows that Lennie was the one who did it.

11. Where did Lennie get in trouble?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Weed

He got in trouble for feeling a girl's red dress and not letting go.

12. What is Lennie's last name?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Small

Lenny is a big guy so it is strange he is named Lennie Small; something like Little John. :-)

13. "I don't want no fights..." Who said this?

From Quiz "Of Mice and Men" Quotes

Answer: Lennie

Lennie wanted to avoid any arguments with George, so he told him so while George was playing Solitaire.

14. What does the name of the town 'Soledad' mean in Spanish?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men

Answer: Loneliness

The setting being named 'Soledad', meaning loneliness, isn't a coincidence. Again, Steinbeck has cleverly picked the names of things, not only with characters, but with the names of places too. One of the novel's major themes is loneliness, and most characters suffer from it. Examples would be: Crooks - segregated from the other men Curley's wife - no one to talk to and in a loveless marriage Lennie - cannot hold a proper conversation because he is so childlike Candy - categorised as old and useless

15. Lennie and George had previously worked where?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Weed

They worked in Weed but had to leave due to an incident with a girl.

16. Why is Crooks considered an outcast?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"

Answer: Because he is black

John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" is set against the backdrop of the depression of the 1930s, a time which is virtually synonymous not only with poverty and unemployment, but also racism. As a result, Crooks is considered an outcast due to the colour of his skin.

17. The character of the old swamper, Candy, and his dog have obvious parallels with which two characters in the novel?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: George & Lennie

The relationship between George and Lennie is very much like the one that the reader sees between Candy and his dog. The most obvious parallel would be the loyalty that Lennie shows George. This is because he idolises George, and will do anything that he is told to. There is also the clear indication that they need one another for company and companionship as without each other, they have nobody.

18. What is the name of the town located near the ranch?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Soledad

This is mentioned several times throughout the story. Firstly, when George and Lennie are in the brush, next when George first meet the other workers in the bunkhouse and again when Curley is beaten by Lennie and must be taken to a doctor.

19. What was the name of Lennie's aunt?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Clara

Aunt Clara means a lot to Lennie still. We can see this at the end of the book when he is hiding and he imagines Aunt Clara telling him off for what he has done.

20. What are the names of the two friends in the book?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: George and Lennie

Friends to the end.

21. 'You hadda, George. I swear you hadda.'?

From Quiz 'Of Mice and Men' Quotes

Answer: Slim

He says this right after George shoots Lennie. He meant that George had to do it in the best interest of both George and Lennie.

22. What does George tell the boss happened to Lennie?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: He got kicked in the head by a horse

23. "You got no right to come in my room." Who said this?

From Quiz "Of Mice and Men" Quotes

Answer: Crooks

Crooks was the African-American servant on the farm. He didn't particularly like anyone there because of how he was treated.

24. Which colour worn by Curley's wife in the novel suggests danger?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men

Answer: Red

The use of colours by Steinbeck is called symbolism, and is a writer's technique. Red is associated with danger, warning and sex. Red is the only colour to describe Curley's wife, suggesting she is a dangerous character, and the girl's dress in Weed is of the same colour, this suggesting she stay away from Lennie.

25. Lennie and George had a dream that they could get a ranch. What did they and many other people believe in?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: The American Dream

'The American Dream' can be summarized as "Everyone can be what they want if they work hard."

26. Which character is being described in the following quotation? "...there was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke."

From Quiz John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"

Answer: Slim

In "Of Mice and Men", the character of Slim is one of the most respected men on the ranch. He holds the position of "jerkline skinner" and is described as "the prince of the ranch". He is authoritative and powerful and yet unlike Curley, (the boss's son), he is also fair and just. Indeed he is presented as an almost Godlike figure, due to the way in which the rest of the ranchworkers worship him.

27. Candy, like numerous other characters in the novel, has a disability, caused by the dangerous working conditions on the ranch. What is Candy's disability?

From Quiz Candy, in 'Of Mice and Men'

Answer: Absence of a hand

Candy lost his right hand in an accident on the ranch, meaning that he received $250 compensation, a key point which is brought up in the third chapter as a way of making George and Lennie's dream seem more possible. His disability ensures his permanent place on the ranch until he is too old to be of any use. It also ensures that he is less able to do things on the ranch, such as the jobs the other men are doing. This causes him to be isolated from the other workers.

28. What color puppy does Lennie want from Slim?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: Brown and White

George asks Slim for the puppy and he gives it to Lennie. However, Lennie is unable to control his strength and accidentally kills the puppy. He tries to hide it but is caught by Curley's wife.

29. What is the name of the blacksmith on the ranch where George and Lennie work?

From Quiz John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"

Answer: Whitey

Whitey is described as a hard worker who is easily irritated.

30. Why was the ranch boss suspicious of George?

From Quiz Of Mice and Men

Answer: He thought he was stealing Lennie's pay

The boss tells George that he'll be watching him. He thinks George is taking away Lennie's pay or something. It's so unusual for two migrant workers to be such close friends.
