Different Seasons Trivia Questions

1. Why is Rita Hayworth mentioned in the title?

From Quiz
Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: Hers is the first poster that Andy Dufresne asks for

This was a common poster that men asked Red to get them. The manner in which Andy acted while asking got Red intrigued and further interested in him.

2. In "The Body", how much money did Vern originally estimate he had buried in the jar?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: three dollars

The longer he couldn't find it, the more he said was in it. He was so obsessed he earned the nickname Penny Tessio from the whole business. Also, if he hadn't still been digging for those pennies, the gang would not have found out about the body in the first place.

3. In the beginning of the book Gordie, Chris, and Teddy are in the treehouse in the vacant lot. What card game are they playing?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Three-penny-scat

The three boys are playing three-penny-scat because it was "too hot to play anything more complicated." Gordie describes the card-game as the "dullest ever invented".

4. "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption": How old was Red when he came to Shawshank?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: 20

Red is "the man who can get it for you." He was sent to prison for killing his wife. He took out an insurance policy on her, then fixed the brakes in her car. Unfortunately, she also stopped to pick up a neighbouring woman and her son. He was given three life sentences, to run consecutively.

5. What was Red's sentence for the crime he committed?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: Three life sentences

Red fixed the brakes on his wife's car with full intentions of killing her. He didn't know that she was going to pick up the neighbor and her baby on her way into town and all three perished in the crash.

6. How many people did Red kill to end up in Shawshank?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: 3

Red was just trying to kill his high-maintenance wife to get away from her and her family, but she picked up her neighbor and neighbor's infant son before her tampered brakes went out.

7. Gordie fires a gun in the alley behind the Blue Point by accident. Francine Tupper, a waitress known as "Thunderjugs Tupper" by Chris, ran into the alley when she heard the shot. What did she think he had done?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Shot off a cherry-bomb

Chris "hawked" his dad's forty-five to take with them on the trip. Since Chris assured him that the gun wasn't loaded, Gordie went ahead and pulled the trigger. He was quite surprised to find out that the gun was indeed loaded. It was a good thing for Gordie that "Thunderjugs Tupper" refused to mar her pretty face by wearing glasses. She had no idea who had made the noise, or what had caused it.

8. What was Andy Dufresne's occupation before he went to Shawshank?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: Bank Vice-president

While Andy was serving his sentence, a man named Blatch told another prisoner that he had killed Andy's wife and her lover. He said Andy was a lawyer.

9. Brooks Hatlen is a much more important character in the movie than he was in the book. For example, in the book he doesn't have a pet. What pet does he have in the movie?

From Quiz "Shawshank": The Book and the Movie

Answer: a crow

In the book, another con named Sherwood Bolton has a pigeon named Jake. Brooks feeds his pet crow Jake a grub Andy found in his food in the mess hall. The scene where Brooks sets his pet free is very touching. Bolton's pigeon dies soon after he sets it free, but the fate of Jake the crow is not shown.

10. What did Red look like when he entered prison in 1938?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: red-headed and good-looking

To anyone who had seen the movie before reading this book, the description of Red was a surprise. He was played by Morgan Freeman in the movie, but in the book he is described as a white redhead who was good-looking and raised on the poor side of town. He "knocked up" a rich girl whose father allowed him to marry her. He soon grew bored with it all and decided to kill her in a way that would look an accident. It didn't work!

11. Why did Andy kill his wife?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: he didn't

He did not kill her even though she did want a divorce and was cheating on him. He even thought it was partly his fault that she died because he wasn't a very good husband and may have driven her to another.

12. Chopper, the feared dump guard-dog, turned out to be what kind of dog?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Black and white mongrel

There were many rumors about Chopper's breed, which was why Gordie was surprised that he wasn't the red-eyed hellhound of his dreams. Chopper, Milo Pressman's dump guard-dog, was a "medium-sized mongrel dog that was a perfectly common black and white."

13. How many years did Red serve at Shawshank before he was finally released?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: 38 years

"After thirty-eight years of routine hearings and routine details (in the course of those thirty-eight years, three lawyers died on me), my parole was finally granted. I suppose they decided that, at the age of fifty-eight, I was finally used up enough to be deemed safe."

14. What was the name of the golf pro that Andy's wife, Linda Dufresne, had an affair with?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: Glenn Quentin

Cote was an inmate who had robbed a bank and ended up killing six; Bolton was an inmate who had a pet pigeon; and Norton was the prison warden who schemed to keep Andy imprisoned even when presented with evidence that he may be innocent.

15. Who was the prison librarian before Andy?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: Brooksie

Brooksie killed himself shortly after leaving prison; he was too institutionalized. Hadley was the first guard Andy helped with his finances. Bogs was one of the sisters who had a thing for Andy. Mert was one of Hadley's guard cronies.

16. After Gordie and Vern miss nearly being run down by a train on the GS&WM trestle, all four boys sit down for a refreshment. What do they drink?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Coke

Gordie picked up the Cokes at the Florida Market while the other boys waited at the dump - all before Chopper and Milo showed up, of course. After nearly getting creamed by the train, Chris asks if anyone could use a Coke. They all could.

17. Who was the warden of Shawshank at the time of Andy's escape?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: Samuel Norton

Byron Hadley was the guard Andy advised about an inheritence, George Dunahay and Greg Stammas were wardens at Shawshank, but both were before Andy's escape.

18. In the film, there was only one warden during Andy's time at the prison. How many were there in the book?

From Quiz "Shawshank": The Book and the Movie

Answer: 3

Andy was in Shawshank from 1947 (movie) or 1948 (book) until the mid-seventies. It's not likely there would have been only one warden in all that time. According to Brooks Hatlen, there were six wardens from 1905 to about 1950. Actually, dramatically, it made more sense to have one warden so his character could be fully developed (and beautifully played by Bob Gunton).

19. What was the first item that Andy asked Red to get for him?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: A rock-hammer

A rock-hammer is like a miniature pickaxe about a foot long. It is used to find valuable or interesting rocks in the earth. Red assumes that Andy used the hammer to carve his initials into his cell's wall and found a weak spot in the wall. Andy then began the long process of tunneling out. Red said it took two rock-hammers and 27 years to complete the tunnel.

20. Who was it that originally called Todd an apt pupil?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: Mrs Upshaw

Mrs Upshaw was his fourth grade teacher and his mother was very pleased by this description of her bright son. She did use the description but she was not the first.

21. What is the name of the town in Mexico where Andy was going after he escaped?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: Zihuatanejo

"Sure I remember the name. Zihuatanejo. A name like that is just too pretty to forget." Guadalajara has a population of 1,650,000, Ciudad Netzahualcoyotl 1,255,500, and Juarez 789,300. (Information from Atlapedia online)

22. What did Andy Dufresne do for prison guard Byron Hadley that got him lifelong protection from the 'sisters' in prison?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: told him a way to get his inheritance tax-free

Andy risked his life and limb by approaching Hadley while he was supposed to be working on tarring a roof. Andy had been listening in on the guards' conversation and being a banker, he knew a loophole that saved Hadley from paying any taxes on an inheritance from his brother.

23. What brand of cigarettes did Chris steal from his dad for the boys to smoke?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Winston

Chris "hawked" four Winstons from his old man's dresser. He saves them for after dinner; "when a cigarette tastes best."

24. "Apt Pupil": What is the (fake) name of the man Todd Bowden discovers is a Nazi?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: Arthur Denker

His real name is Kurt Dussander, and he was Unterkommandant at Auschwitz from June 1943 to June 1944, amongst other things.

25. Andy and Red play checkers in the movie, and Andy decides to a set of playing pieces out of rocks. What game do they play in the book?

From Quiz "Shawshank": The Book and the Movie

Answer: none

No game playing is mentioned in the book. In the movie, when the men are working outside the prison, Red has the men looking for appropriate rocks for carving.

26. Why was it so important to Andy to keep his cell to himself and not have any cell mates?

From Quiz Stephen King: Different Seasons: Shawshank

Answer: he was busy every night tunneling out

He did have a roommate for a while, he was a Native American named Normaden. Normaden later said that Andy was nice, but he could tell that Andy didn't want him there and he was happy to go since the cell was so drafty and cold!

27. What did Todd kill first?

From Quiz "Different Seasons" of the King

Answer: blue jay

It was Dussander who killed the cats and dogs. Todd ran over an injured blue jay with his bike, his first act of violence.

28. Chris tells Gordie that by next June, they will be "quits". Why does he say this?

From Quiz Events in Stephen King's "The Body"

Answer: Because Gordie will be in college courses

Since the boys will be starting junior high that year, it won't be like grammar school. Chris figures that Gordie will be in the college courses and that he, Vern, and Teddy will be in the shop courses. Gordie would, of course, meet better, smarter friends and be done with the three of them. In their second year of junior high, Chris, with Gordie's support, does enroll in the college courses. He didn't have the support of his family or other friends, but he eventually ended up going to college and enrolling in pre-law.

29. A character from another story in "Different Seasons" is briefly mentioned in "Apt Pupil", who is it?

From Quiz Different Seasons

Answer: Andy Dufresne - Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption

"I live now on stock dividends. Stocks I picked up after the war under yet another name. Through a bank in the State of Maine, if you please. The banker who bought them for me went to jail for murdering his wife a year after I bought them...life is sometimes strange, boy, hein?" "Dufresne, his name was - I remember, because it sounds a little like mine. It seems he was not so smart at wife-killing as he was at picking growth stocks."

30. Red gets the famous Rita Hayworth poster for Andy, although he has no idea what the poster is really for. In the movie, the men watch a Rita Hayworth movie. Andy says he's seen it three times and then asks Red for the poster. What movie was it?

From Quiz "Shawshank": The Book and the Movie

Answer: Gilda

The movie scene is not in the book. Rita was in all of these movies, but the men were watching "Gilda" (1946), in which she co-starred with Glenn Ford and George Macready. She was born Margarita Cansino in Brooklyn in 1918 and was a natural brunette and a dye-job redhead, although it was hard to tell on screen. She was one of the most glamorous stars of the 1940s, rivaling Betty Grable as top "pin-up" girl. In 1949, she married international playboy Prince Aly Khan. It was a marriage the tabloid press just ate up. Gilda Radner was born in 1946, and she was named after Hayworth's character. (obits.com/radnergilda.html)
