The Godfather: Part III Trivia Questions

2. "The Godfather Coda" opened with Michael Corleone looking to acquire a stake in a legitimate business organization run by the Catholic Church. What was the name of it?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Immobiliare

"The Godfather Part III" opened with an overview of the abandoned and flooded out home of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) at Lake Tahoe. It also featured a scene of Michael Corleone getting inducted into The Order of Saint Sebastian by Archbishop Gilday (Donal Donnelly). In addition, a flashback scene from "The Godfather Part II" was shown. All of those scenes were cut from "The Godfather Coda". The newer version instead began with Michael Corleone discussing the acquisition of a stake in a Vatican backed corporation named Immobiliare (which means 'real estate' in Italian) with the Archbishop, a scene that was originally placed about 40 minutes into the film. Following this meeting, the newer version moved on to the reception scene celebrating Michael's induction to the Order.

3. What year is it when the movie opens?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: 1979

After a few shots of the abandoned Corleone 'compound' in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the scene changes, and we see a title card that reads 'New York City, 1979.'

4. Andy Garcia's character was introduced a few minutes earlier in "The Godfather Coda" than in "The Godfather Part III". What is his name?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Vincent Mancini

Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia) was the illegitimate son of Santino (Sonny) Corleone (James Caan), Michael's oldest brother. Vincent's mother was one of the bridesmaids that Sonny had an affair with during the wedding scene of the original "Godfather" film. Sonny would later be gunned down while stopped at a toll booth. Vincent Mancini was introduced during the reception scene about eight minutes into "The Godfather Part III". This scene was edited to occur a few minutes earlier in "The Godfather Coda", with Vincent making his first appearance in the film about five minutes into the story. Vincent eventually took over as the new head of the Corleone Family after Michael declared his retirement.

5. We're told that Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia) is the illegitimate child of Santino 'Sonny' Corleone (James Caan, from the first two 'Godfather' films). What is Vincent's mother's first name?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Lucy & Luci & Lucie

Lucy Mancini (Jeannie Linero) sneaked upstairs for some private time with Sonny during his sister's wedding in 'The Godfather.' Lucy appears briefly in 'The Godfather Part III' as well -- she accompanies Vincent to the party at the beginning of the film.

6. Which controversial actress played Mary Corleone (Michael's daughter) in "The Godfather Part III"/"The Godfather Coda"?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Sofia Coppola

One of the major criticisms of "The Godfather Part III" was the performance of Sofia Coppola as Mary Corleone. Sofia is of course the daughter of the movie's director Francis Ford Coppola and her inclusion in the film is often seen as being a case of nepotism. Sofia Coppola was actually a last minute replacement as Winona Ryder had been originally chosen to play Mary Corleone, but she was forced to turn down the role due to health issues. Many fans of the trilogy feel as though Sofia Coppola's acting skills were sub par in her performance as Mary Corleone. Another major complaint about Mary Corleone was the incestuous relationship she had with Vincent Mancini. Despite these criticisms the majority of her scenes in "The Godfather Coda" were unaltered.

7. Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is shown receiving a presitigious community service award from the Catholic church. Complete its title: The Order of St. __________.

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Sebastian

Sebastian, incidentally, is the patron saint of archers, soldiers, and athletes.

8. The helicopter massacre scene from "The Godfather Part III" was pretty much left intact in "The Godfather Coda". In which party city does it take place?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Atlantic City

In order to try and sever ties with the Mafia once and for all, Michael Corleone had set up a meeting with The Commission (the ruling body of the Mafia) at the top of a casino named the Palazzo Azzuro which was located in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Parts of the scene were filmed at the former Trump Castle (currently the Golden Nugget), which is a real life casino in Atlantic City. Michael had attempted to buy out The Commission by offering them lump sums of money. Joey Zasa (Joe Mantegna), who had taken over the illegal side of the Corleone Family business felt like he was being left out of the deal. He left the meeting in anger and shortly after flew to the window of the meeting room in a helicopter. He and his entourage killed nearly the entire Commission. Michael, Vincent and several other characters survived the attack.

9. One of the cut scenes in "The Godfather Coda" involved Michael's last living sibling authorizing the assassination of Joey Zasa over the Don's head. Who gave the go ahead?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Connie

In "The Godfather Part III", following the casino attack, Michael suffered a diabetic episode triggered by stress from renewed Mafia shenanigans. Seeing Michael in a weakened state and thirsting to get revenge on Joey Zasa, Michael's sister Connie Corleone (Talia Shire) and the family enforcer Al Neri (Richard Bright) gave Vincent the go ahead to carry out Joey Zasa's assassination without Michael's approval. Following the hit, Vincent, Al and Connie were all reprimanded by Michael. In "The Godfather Coda", the scene authorizing the attack was cut and it was instead implied that the meeting between Vincent, Al and Connie occurred off camera. The reprimanding scene was left in the "The Godfather Coda". Anthony Corleone (Franc D'Ambrosio) was Michael's son. Fredo (John Cazale) was killed in "The Godfather Part II". Tom Hagen (Michael's adoptive brother) had died some time between "The Godfather Part II" and "The Godfather Part III"/"The Godfather Coda". The character was killed off due to a pay dispute with actor Robert Duvall.

10. Another scene that was cut in "The Godfather Coda" involved an elderly mob boss who would become one of Michael Corleone's main antagonists. Who was it?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: Don Altobello

Don Altobello (Eli Wallach) was once a trusted ally of the Corleone Family. In fact, he had been named the godfather of Connie Corleone. When Michael attempted to sever ties with the Mafia, Don Altobello had advised him reconsider his actions, that it would likely upset some of the other bosses. Following the helicopter massacre, seeing that Don Altobello had ducked out right before the shooting began, Michael began to suspect that Don Altobello betrayed the family. In "The Godfather Part III", while Michael was recovering in the hospital, he questioned Don Altobello about the attack. Don Altobello's responses pretty much gave the audience proof of his betrayal at an earlier point of the story. In "The Godfather Coda", this scene was deleted and Don Altobello's true motives were not revealed until later in the movie.

11. Kay Adams (Diane Keaton), Michael's ex-wife, shows up at the party as well. The conversation is not friendly, causing Michael to say, 'You hate me. You must hate me.' Kay corrects him, though: 'I don't hate you, Michael. I _______ you.'

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: dread

Much is made of this 'dread' comment later in the film, once Kay arrives in Sicily.

12. Don Lucchesi's death scene was made bloodier in "The Godfather Coda" than in the original film. How was he killed?

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: He was stabbed in the neck with his glasses.

Don Lucchesi (Enzo Robutti) was a powerful Mafia boss from Sicily who also had strong political ties to the Catholic Church. He was very much against having Michael Corleone partner with the Vatican in their Immobiliaire deal. Don Lucchesi would later be revealed to have been the mastermind behind the helicopter massacre in Atlantic City. During the opera/multiple assassination scene of "The Godfather Part III/The Godfather Coda", Don Lucchesi was stabbed in the neck with his own glasses. Apparently some of the blood had to be edited out of the original film to avoid it receiving an NC-17 rating. In "The Godfather Coda" however, Don Lucchesi's wound gushed out blood as if it were a water fountain.

13. Don Altobello (Eli Wallach) is an old, trusted friend of the Corleone family -- so trusted, in fact, that he was made godfather to one of Vito Corleone's children. Which one?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Connie

It's stated several times that Connie (Talia Shire) is Altobello's goddaughter. Fitting, then -- and slightly twisted -- that it is she who takes an active hand in killing him at the end of the film.

14. Michael and Kay's son Tony (Franc D'Ambrosio) tells his father that he is dropping out of law school despite his father's wishes. What profession is Tony leaving law school to pursue?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: opera singer

Tony finds success pretty quickly, too -- he's starring in an opera in Sicily by the end of the film.

15. Complete the following quote, which was shown during the outro of "The Godfather Coda": "When the Sicilians wish you 'Cent'anni'... it means 'for long life' ____________."

From Quiz The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Answer: ...and a Sicilian never forgets.

After "The Godfather Coda" faded to black a message appeared to the audience. The first line shown was "When the Sicilians wish you 'Cent'anni'... it means 'for long life'". The next line "...and a Sicilian never forgets" finished the quote before the credits began to roll. This quotation was not included in "The Godfather Part III". The change in the ending was seemingly done to allow first time watchers to speculate for themselves what Michael's final fate was. However, the quotation at the outro seemed to imply that Michael's guilt would not have allowed him to die for a long time and that he would be forced to endure a long solitary life as punishment for his many sins.

16. Adopted Corleone brother Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) is not in 'The Godfather Part III,' but his son is. What is the name of Tom's son?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Andrew

Andrew Hagen (John Savage) is a priest, and Michael secures him a position at the Vatican. According to Coppola's DVD commentary, Tom Hagen was supposed to be in the film, but Robert Duvall's demands could not be met reasonably. He was written out of the film at the last minute and 'replaced' by a new character, B.J. Harrison (George Hamilton).

17. A small part in the film is played by a 'Saturday Night Live' alum from the early days of the series. In what role would you find this person in vintage 'SNL' reruns?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Father Guido Sarducci

Don Novello plays Dominic Abbandando, one of Michael's men -- he's the one who explains what the Order of St. Sebastian is to the press at the party. I must admit, I was kind of hoping to see him get into his Father Sarducci persona and take on the Vatican for a scene or two. =)

18. A mass assassination attempt is made during a meeting of family heads in the penthouse of a hotel. In what state does this scene take place?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: New Jersey

The meeting-turned-deathtrap, arranged by Don Altobello, takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

19. Vincent is in disguise when he kills Joey Zasa at the street festival. What is he dressed as?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: a mounted policeman

Once Vincent rides onto the scene, Joey doesn't stand a chance.

20. It is revealed in the film that Michael Corleone suffers from a serious disease. What is it?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: diabetes

Michael is shown taking insulin shots, suffering from rapid blood sugar crashes, and having vision problems as a result of diabetes.

21. Kay Adams has remarried since divorcing Michael. What is her husband's name?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: Douglas

We see Douglas Michelson (Brett Halsey) at the party in the beginning of the film, but he is unable to make it to Sicily for his stepson's opera debut.

22. Mosca, the Sicilian assassin hired by Don Altobello to kill Michael, has a young assistant -- possibly his son -- who imitates a certain animal on command. What animal is it?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: a donkey

Apparently the kid's famous for his donkey imitation, since Don Altobello asks to see it the moment he encounters him. 'Stupid Human Tricks,' take note.

23. Don Altobello, the traitor, is dealt with rather subtly -- he's poisoned. What does he eat that kills him?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: cannolis

His goddaughter Connie presents him with a box of poisoned cannolis just before the opera begins. He drops dead in his seat at the end of the opera.

24. Don Licio Luchessi (Enzo Ributti), the villain in the Roman government, is killed with a rather unusual weapon. What does Calo (Franco Citti) use to kill Luchessi?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: eyeglasses

Calo is searched thoroughly before being shown into Luchessi's office, so he is unable to bring a weapon with him. He is forced to improvise by removing Luchessi's glasses and stabbing him in the throat with the extended edge of the earpiece. Points for creativity, there, Calo.

25. What year is it when Michael Corleone dies in the last shot of the film?

From Quiz The Godfather Part III

Answer: It's never said

Michael looks a good twenty years older than he did in 1979, but the exact time frame is never stated.
