For a junior science competition Wednesday invents a machine for people to use to replace irritating traits in others by more desirable ones. She demonstrates it by linking Fester's and her pet octopus' brains and copying its Rubik's Cube-solving ability to him. The scientist sponsoring the competition, Cyrus Strange, is impressed and wants Wednesday to tell him the secret of how the machine works but she refuses, saying it belongs to the family. Wednesday's pet from previous movies has sometimes (but only sometimes) been referred to as a squid but in this movie it is clearly an octopus as it has a round head and eight same-sized tentacles spaced around its body. In contrast a squid has a flatter, triangular-shaped head and ten tentacles of two different sizes.

Since his brain was temporarily linked with that of an octopus, Fester has not only become attracted to water but his right foot and leg and then his left hand and arm have been transformed into tentacles. The family is traveling in a camper van driven by Thing on their three-week vacation when Fester sees a billboard advertising Niagara Falls and decides he needs to go there instead of Salem so takes over the driving. As in the previous movie,'The Addams Family' (2019), Fester is voiced by the actor Nick Kroll while the actress Chloë Grace Moretz reprises her role as the voice of Wednesday Addams.

Gomez is voiced by the actor Oscar Isaac, as he was in earlier movie 'The Addams Family' (2019), while the actress Charlize Theron again provides the voice of Morticia Addams, the wife of Gomez.

Most of the characters in 'The Addams Family 2' are voiced by the same people who played them in the earlier 'The Addams Family'. However, he misinterprets what she says and starts playing a piano and singing 'I Will Survive', a song made famous by singer Gloria Gaynor in 1978. 'Born to be Wild' (1969) was a hit for Steppenwolf and was part of the soundtrack of the movie 'Easy Rider', 'Motorcyle Man' was a 1979 single by heavy metal band Saxon and the novelty song 'Funky Moped' was a 1975 hit for British comedian Jasper Carrott.

The scientist Cyrus Strange introduces Ophelia as his daughter and she and Pugsley are getting on well but then she changes into a pig, which does cause him to scream once but he does not run away. Similarly, the scientist's supposed wife looks and sounds very bird-like and then becomes a bird. Strange tells the Addams family that he has invented a way of imbuing animals and birds with human traits but that they revert back. The actor Bill Hader provides the voice of Cyrus Strange and the actress Cherami Leigh is the voice of Ophelia but the supposed wife of Cyrus was not given a human voice.

Wednesday has been tricked into believing that the scientist Cyrus Strange is her father but refuses to help him experiment on others of the Addams family. Strange tells his muscle man, Pongo, to attack and Wednesday tells Lurch to do the same. However, when these two large men get close to each other they hug instead of hitting one another. It turns out that Lurch and Pongo had been cellmates in an asylum until the Addams family came for Lurch. As he did in the earlier 'The Addams Family' movie, Conrad Vernon provides the voice of Lurch in 'Addams Family 2' except that Dominic Lewis provides Lurch's singing voice when the character sings in a roadhouse scene. Pongo is voiced by Ted Evans.

Having imprisoned Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley and Thing, the scientist Cyrus Strange intends to change them into powerful evil beings. However he is foiled by Lurch and Pongo and is himself changed into an enormous evil creature with a bird's face, neck, wings and upper part, and an animal's lower part with strong hind legs and tail. This creature attacks the family but Fester has turned into a giant octopus and fights and beats the creature then Wednesday turns Fester back into his old self. Thing does not speak in the movie but two other family members to appear in parts of the movie are Grandma Addams, voiced by Bette Midler, and Cousin Itt, whose voice is provided by songwriter, rapper and actor Snoop Dogg.

Wednesday appears disappointed about this and says she had thought it stood for 'dismemberment'. The characters in 'The Addams Family 2' were based on those created by Charles Addams. The movie's story line was devised by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit while the screenplay was written by them and by Ben Queen and Susanna Fogel. Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon were the main directors while the movie's producers were Conrad Vernon, Danielle Sterling, Alison O'Brien and Gail Berman.
