1. What did the only crew survivor steal?

The mechanic, Fraga (whose real name was Carlos Roque), the only flight crew member to survive the crash unhurt, was found virtually hidden beneath the coat he took from Nando's sister, Susanna. Seemingly demented by the crash (perhaps shock), he isolated himself from the rest of the survivors, and eventually died from exposure.

After throwing notes wrapped around stones, the rescue was accomplished.

Nando later repays the favor by being the one who hikes out of the mountains to summon rescuers.

Canessa (Josh Hamilton) fills a handkerchief with snow and gives it to the pilot (Michael Sicoly) to suck on. After moistening his mouth, the pilot asks for his bag because he wants his gun. Canessa refuses, because as a Catholic he can't take part in a mercy killing. The fact that the pilot survives is important, because he also tells the survivors what he thinks their location is. He is wrong, which is why the plane crashed, and why it is so much further to Chile than the survivors anticipate.

The Canadian Rockies provided the movie's Andes Mountains. Nando Parrado was brought on as technical advisor. He as well as a few other survivors were shown the film site and were amazed at how closely real it was. This story was first dramatized by a Mexican production called "Survive!" ('75). "Alive" and "Survive!" were based on the true story written by Piers Paul Read ~ "Alive: The Miracle of the Andes".
