The Apartment Trivia Questions

1. "Some weather we're having. Must be from all the meshugaas at Cape Canaveral." While observing Bud standing outside his apartment at the beginning of the movie, which character makes this observation?

From Quiz
"The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Mrs. Lieberman

Bud's long suffering landlady has only a few scenes, but Frances Weintraub Lax's wonderful performance (uncredited at the time of the film's release) invokes fond thoughts of everybody's favorite Jewish aunt. "Meshugaas" is a Yiddish word for foolishness. Since the movie was released in 1960, we can probably assume that Mrs. Lieberman wasn't the only one who had suspicions about the activity at Cape Canaveral!

2. C.C. 'Bud' Baxter is the protagonist. What does C.C. stand for?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: Calvin Clifford

No one calls him by his first name. It's Bud, Buddyboy, Mr. Baxter or Baxter.

3. After Fran's attempted suicide, which well-meaning character lectures Bud about his alleged lifestyle and finishes with the advice "Live now. Pay later. Diners Club!"?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Dr. Dreyfuss

The good doctor isn't thinking about delayed payments for purchases when he admonishes Bud about his wild lifestyle and tries to make him see that his escapades are bound to have consequences down the road. This is truly one of the best lines in the movie. The role of Dr. Dreyfuss was played superbly by Jack Kruschen, earning him an Academy Award nomination.

4. Miss Kubelik lives with...

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: Her sister and brother-in-law

Her brother-in-law, Karl Matuschka, gives Bud a shiner.

5. True to form, the sentence "Premium-wise and billing-wise, we're eighteen percent ahead of last year, October-wise" is dictated by which executive at the Consolidated office?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Mr. Kirkeby

Kirkeby's incessant, and often annoying, use of the word "wise" as a suffix is a common theme throughout the movie. In fact, when Bud uses the expression "promotion-wise", Fran informs him that he is "beginning to sound like Mr. Kirkeby already".

6. After a disastrous date with one of the womanizing executives, which party girl is overheard recounting to a friend at the office"....so I said to him 'Never again. Either get yourself a bigger car or a smaller girl.'"?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Sylvia

When Bud puts a stop to the use of his apartment, the philandering executives must find other places for their rendezvous. In this scene, the rather full figured Sylvia describes her forgettable drive-in movie date with Kirkeby, which takes place in his nephew's borrowed (and unheated) Volkswagen.

7. A good deal of the movie takes place during...

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: Christmas through New Years

Given the themes in this movie (attempted suicide and adultery) it's no surprise this hasn't become a holiday staple.

8. "You see a girl a couple of times a week, just for laughs, and right away she thinks you're going to divorce your wife. I ask you - is that fair?" Which philandering executive defends his actions to Bud with this comment?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Jeff Sheldrake

Bud's response is that it is indeed unfair, especially to Sheldrake's wife! The dishonorable Sheldrake is best described as a cad, showing no respect or regard for the feelings of others. Fred MacMurray reportedly considered turning down the role out of concern that fans' disapproval of Sheldrake's unscrupulous ways would affect the success of "My Three Sons", which was scheduled for release a few months later.

9. Where was Miss Kubelik first kissed?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: In a cemetary

Part of this monologue was used in the Italian movie 'Bread and Tulips' - also recommended.

10. "How could I be so stupid? You'd think I would have learned by now -- when you're in love with a married man, you shouldn't wear mascara." Which woman makes this tearful observation during a Christmas Eve rendezvous at Bud's apartment?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Fran

Fran has just learned that she is just one in a long line of Jeff Sheldrake's conquests and spends most of Christmas Eve crying her eyes out at Bud's apartment. The talented Shirley MacLaine picked up her second Oscar nomination for her marvelous portrayal of the vulnerable and trusting elevator girl, Fran Kubelik.

11. After learning of Fran's attempted suicide, who tells Bud, very contemptuously, that what he needs "is a good horse-whipping"?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Mrs. Dreyfuss

Mrs. Dreyfuss mistakenly believes Bud is responsible for Fran's suicide attempt and gives him a good tongue-lashing, referring to him as "Max the Knife" and "King Faruk". Fran's brother-in-law, Karl Matushka, gives Bud a black eye before convincing her to go home to her family, but he promptly forgets the pain when she kisses his cheek!

12. 'The Apartment' was nominated for Best Picture in 1960. What movie did it lose to?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: It won

And deservedly so.

13. "I broke a nail trying to get the ice-tray out. You ought to buy yourself a new refrigerator." (pause) "I didn't mean right now!" Which Christmas Eve guest at the apartment delivers this line?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Margie MacDougall

This is one of the funniest scenes in the movie! Margie, oblivious to Bud's discovery of the unconscious Fran, thinks he's frantically rushing out in the middle of the night to replace the offending ice tray (on Christmas Eve, no less). Hope Holiday is flawless as the likable but somewhat dimwitted Mrs. MacDougall.

14. Where is Bud's apartment?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: The West Sixties

He's near Central Park and pays {$84} a month in rent.

15. "Just following doctor's orders. I've decided to become a mensch. You know what that means? A human being." Who explains his decision to resign from his job with these words?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Bud

Tired of the deception and the uncaring attitudes of his superiors, Bud finally decides that no amount of money or job prestige is worth such a price. He also hands Sheldrake the key to the executive washroom and adds that he won't be needing it because he's "all washed up around here". Jack Lemmon received a Best Oscar nomination for what is still regarded as one of his finest performances.

16. Bud asks Miss Kubelik to see a musical with him. Which one is it?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: The Music Man

Unfortunately, Miss Kubelik ends up back at the Apartment - with Sheldrake.

17. After being informed that she has been fired from her job and told to leave Consolidated immediately, which character says "Don't worry, I'm on my way. I was just making a personal call", and follows up with the sarcastic "Here's a dime"?

From Quiz "The Apartment" Who Said It?

Answer: Miss Olsen

Sheldrake fires his secretary after learning that she told Fran about his many indiscretions. Just before leaving the office for the last time, Miss Olsen exacts revenge by calling his wife and arranging an "educational" meeting with her.

18. What is Miss Kubelik's response when Bud says he loves her?

From Quiz The Apartment

Answer: 'Shut up and deal!'

And that's about it, quiz-wise.
