At the beginning of the movie, Jeremy Irons' character, Brom, explained about the dragon riders before Galbatorix became king. One of the things he said was "to protect and serve was their mission".

During that period of time, Eragon was able to ride on the tail. He jumped off of the tail and killed Durza.

Brom didn't think he was ready to take on the Ra'zac though and argued against it. Finally Brom gave in and said "That's the spirit. One part brave, three parts fool." After the battle sequence towards the end of the film, Saphira was badly injured and Eragon healed her. Afterwards he said to Saphira "didn't an old magician once tell us one part brave, three parts fool?"
