The robot is first ordered to blast a plant, which it does. Then Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) tells Robbie to kill Commander Adams (Leslie Nielsen). Robby is conflicted between a direct order and his inability to harm a human being. He starts to short circuit, but Morbius cancels the order before any damage is done to the robot.

Although more popularly known for his roles in movies such as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun", Leslie Nielsen played a more serious role as the commander of the rescue ship in this film. Later, in the film, Dr. Morbius chided the commander by saying that it really didn't take any brains to be the commander, just a loud voice.

Nevertheless, later in the film, Robby, as promised, produced 480 pints (60 gallons) of "genuine Kansas City bourbon," for the cook. Naturally, the cook was eternally grateful. "Any time you're hard up for lube oil, let me know."

In the final dramatic scene, Dr. Morbius reluctantly acknowledged that he was, in fact, the source of the monster that destroyed their original expedition. In order to prevent the potentially deadly technology of the Krell from reaching Earth, Dr. Morbius told Commander Adams how to initiate the Krell self-destruct device. We saw Robby at the controls, Altaira embracing the commander, and the destruction of the planet, from the viewscreen of the ship, as it began its journey back to Earth.
