Harvey Trivia Questions

1. What are Elwood's middle initial and surname which he always gives when introducing himself?

From Quiz
Harvey

Answer: P. Dowd

When introducing himself to new people, he says "my name's Dowd, Elwood P."

2. Why are Elwood's sister and niece ashamed of him?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: He has an invisible friend

A bit easy really, if you've seen the film. His niece, Myrtle-Mae says: "People get run over by trucks all the time, why can't something like that happen to Uncle Elwood?". A bit harsh, I think.

3. What was the name of the eccentric main character played by James Stewart?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: Elwood P. Dowd

He says his name many times in the course of the film. "Dowd's the name. Elwood P. Allow me to give you one of my cards. If you ever want to call me, use this number, not this one --- that's the old number. And now" (gesturing up into empty space), "I'd like you to meet a very special friend of mine..." For the record, Lyman Sanderson is the young doctor's name, Scottie Ferguson is Stewart's character in 'Vertigo,' and Roger Hobbs is Stewart's character in 'Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation.'

4. What are the certain "steps" Elwood's sister Veta Louise wishes to take concerning Elwood?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Putting him into a mental hospital

Elwood's sister Veta decides to have him put into the Chumley's Rest mental asylum. This is because (in her opinion) he has become obsessed with his best friend Harvey, a large white rabbit that only he can see. Nobody believes Harvey exists except Elwood, at least to begin with.

5. What type of creature is Harvey?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: A pooka

A pooka, as Dowd says, "is something very old." An Irish spirit, it seems to most often appear as a horse. Harvey, however, is a six-foot-three ("let's be precise about this," says Dowd) rabbit. For more information on pookas, this is a fine site. http://www.irelandseye.com/animation/intro.html

6. Harvey is a pooka, a mischievous sprite that takes the appearance of an animal, usually much bigger than normal. According to the film, from what mythology do pookas come?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Celtic

This definition is given in the film by the character Wilson, an employee at the mental hospital who looks up the word in the dictionary after Elwood refers to Harvey as "a pooka".

7. What happens when Veta Louise takes Elwood out to have him committed to Chumley's Rest?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: They lock up Veta and let Elwood go.

Veta is interviewed by Dr. Sanderson (Charles Drake) who comes to the conclusion that Veta is the one who needs to be committed! When she finally gets back home, she tells Judge Gaffney that she was taken upstairs, undressed, and put in a tub of water. She also tells the Judge she wants to sue Chumley's.

8. With whom does Stewart's character live?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: His sister and niece

His sister, Veta Lousie Simmons, is a bit of an eccentric herself, though she doesn't seem to know it. She wishes Dowd would get out of the house more so she could entertain high society guests for her spinster daughter Myrtle Mae, Dowd's niece, to meet.

9. What is the name of Elwood and Harvey's favourite bar?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Charlie's Place

The barman in Charlie's Place is always friendly to Elwood and asks how Harvey is. He never acts like he finds it odd that Elwood buys two martinis, one being for a large invisible rabbit.

10. What does Stewart's character do for a living?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: Nothing; he's independently wealthy

He's wealthy because his mother left him all her money, a fact which his sister doesn't seem to resent, though his niece does. Why did his mother give it all to Dowd? "Perhaps because she died in his arms," his sister guesses (though her daughter points out that she couldn't have changed the will after she died).

11. At the corner of which streets does Elwood say he first met Harvey?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Eighteenth and Fairfax

Elwood tells Dr. Sanderson and Miss Kelly that the first time he and Harvey met, Harvey was standing under a streetlight and said: "Good Evening, Mr. Dowd". Elwood went over to talk to him. Elwood didn't think it was strange because, living in a small town, everyone knows each other's name!

12. What is the name of the sanitorium where Stewart's character is taken?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: Chumley's Rest

Named after the senior doctor, Willie Chumley. As to the other answers, Rancho Relaxo is a spa featured in an episode of 'The Simpsons,' and I made up the other two, though I got Freemont Farms from Grace Kelly's character in another Stewart classic, 'Rear Window.'

13. What is the name of the chemical that Dr. Sanderson wishes to inject Elwood with, in order to make him stop seeing Harvey?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Formula 977

Dr. Sanderson says the injection will get rid of Elwood's "hallucination" and help him see his responsibilities.

14. Whose portrait does Dr. Chumley see on the mantle when he comes to the Dowd house looking for Elwood?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: A painting of Elwood and Harvey

Elwood comes in, unwraps a portrait of himself and Harvey, and places it on the mantle in front of his mother's portrait. This is the portrait Dr. Chumley sees when he comes looking for Elwood.

15. In addition to being severely deluded (in the opinion of some), Stewart's character has the bad habit of what?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: Drinking a lot

Dowd is constantly in and out of bars, especially his favorite Charlie's, where he orders "two martinis" (one for Harvey, of course). Dowd compliments women a lot, but he's no womanizer; and if you guessed fighting, you're way off. Dowd's as gentle as a lamb.

16. Elwood tells Dr. Chumley that Harvey has the power to stop time so that anyone can go anywhere they like for as long as they like, without anyone else noticing. Where does Dr. Chumley say he'd go if he could?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Akron

Dr. Chumley, the chief doctor at the mental hospital, says he would like two weeks in Akron with lots of cold beer and a woman to listen to his problems and say "poor, poor thing" to him. Elwood is surprised that the doctor wouldn't like whiskey instead of beer.

17. Finish the quote. "In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so ________."

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: pleasant

This was advice Dowd's mother gave him. Dowd finishes, "For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. And you may quote me."

18. Who wrote the Pulitzer-winning play upon which the film was based?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Mary Chase

She also wrote the screenplay for the film.

19. Who stops Elwood from having the injection to make him "normal" at the end of the movie?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Veta Louise

Veta Louise realizes that she wants her brother to stay just as he is: sweet, kind, and considerate. She doesn't think that having Harvey around is too bad after all. Nurse Kelly is played by Peggy Dow.

20. At the end of the film, Harvey says he "prefers," and stays with, whom?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: Stewart's character

Willie Chumley begs Harvey to stay with him, and Harvey leaves Dowd. Dowd wanders off, slightly saddened, but minutes later Harvey returns. Or, Dowd's severe delusion returns. Either way.

21. Which actor or actress won an Academy Award for his or her work on this film?

From Quiz Harvey

Answer: Josephine Hull

Josephine Hull won the Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of Veta Louise Simmons, Elwood's desperate and often bemused sister whose social life had been ruined by her brother's strange behaviour. Veta even admits to Dr. Sanderson that she had started to see Harvey too and as a result is mistakenly committed to the hospital instead of Elwood. Josephine Hull also starred in "Arsenic and Old Lace".

22. Finally, what is the coincidence behind the name "Harvey" and Stewart's character?

From Quiz 'Harvey' (1950)

Answer: It's always been his favorite name

Dr. Lyman tries to show Dowd that he imagined Harvey by interrogating him on any "Harveys" he might have known as a child. But Dowd says it's just always been his favorite name; he knew no Harveys. "Perhaps that's why I always had high hopes for the name," he says. Thanks for playing this quiz! Have a great day.
