Rebecca Trivia Questions

1. What is the ominous housekeeper's nickname? (She's played by Judith Anderson.)

From Quiz
"Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Danny

Mrs. Danvers' nickname is used by Rebecca's "favorite cousin", Jack Favell, played by George Sanders.

2. Hitchcock was nominated five times for Best Director, including "Rebecca". For what five pictures was he nominated?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: "Rebecca", "Lifeboat", "Spellbound", "Rear Window", "Psycho"

Though "Vertigo" is considered, by cineastes, to be Hitchcock's masterpiece, it was not nominated. He was also later derisive of Kim Novak's performance.

3. What actress did Laurence Olivier want as his co-star in "Rebecca"?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Vivien Leigh

Olivier was in love with and wanted to be married to Vivien Leigh. He was reportedly cool to Joan Fontaine during shooting of "Rebecca", an attitude Hitchcock did nothing to discourage since it enhanced newcomer Fontaine's insecurities and suited her onscreen character.

4. The first Mrs. DeWinter dies differently in the film than in the novel. How did she die in Hitchcock's version?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Fall

Rebecca, knowing she has cancer, taunts Maxim with a false pregnancy by another man. He strikes her. She advances on him again, but stumbles and falls, accidentally hitting her head on ship's tackle in the boathouse. Realizing she is dead, Maxim puts her body in a boat and capsizes it at sea, to fake her accidental drowning. In the novel, he shoots her, then fakes her drowning. Selznick wanted to remain faithful to the novel, in which Maxim brutally shoots his treacherous first wife. The censors of the time would not permit the murder without Maxim paying the penalty.

5. What is Maxim's sister's name?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Beatrice

Beatrice is played by British actress Gladys Cooper.

6. What is Maxim's dog's name?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Jasper

Jasper leads the second Mrs. DeWinter to discover the infamous boathouse, where she eventually learns the truth about Rebecca's death.

7. Selznick and Hitchcock both tried to persuade another actor to play Maxim DeWinter. Whom did they court before "settling" for Laurence Olivier?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: William Powell

All three other actors were considered before Olivier. Olivier's asking price, despite his recent hit as Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights", was $100,000 less than their first choice, William Powell.

8. What character actress portrayed Mrs. Van Hopper?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: Florence Bates

Florence Bates was originally a lawyer from Texas, who went on to co-star as a character actress in nearly 70 films, including "Lullaby of Broadway" with Doris Day.

9. What did Hitchcock himself say to Francois Truffaut of "Rebecca" in 1966?

From Quiz "Rebecca" Redux

Answer: "Well, it's not a Hitchcock picture."

"The fact is, the story lacks humor," Hitchcock further explained, as quoted in Truffaut's book, "Hitchcock".
