Torn Curtain Trivia Questions

1. The beginning scene introduces us to Michael Armstrong, an American physicist, and his female 'assistant', Sarah Sherman [played by Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, respectively]. To which European city are they going?

From Quiz
"Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: Copenhagen, Denmark

The first scene of the film shows us Michael Armstrong and Sarah Sherman aboard a cruise ship headed for Copenhagen, Denmark. They are coming to a convention in Europe to discuss the latest in anti-missile technology. Newman and Andrews were not Hitchcock's first choice for the roles; he was hoping for Cary Grant for the male lead and another of his "icy blondes" (Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Tippi Hedren or perhaps an unknown) for the female lead. But the studio convinced him that Newman and Andrews were bigger "box office" and it was felt he resented having these two actors "pushed down his throat".

2. Who portrayed Dr. Sarah Sherman?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Julie Andrews

Julie did a wonderful job, in my opinion.

3. Who played Prof. Michael Armstrong?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Paul Newman

Michael and Sarah are engaged in the movie.

4. Where does Michael tell Sarah he is going, and where is he really going?

From Quiz "Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: says he is going to Stockholm, is really going to East Berlin

Michael tells Sarah he is going to Stockholm, Sweden, but he is acting so suspiciously she doesn't believe him. So, foolishly, she follows him and they both end up on a plane to East Berlin. When Michael sees her on the plane, he is furious, but it is too late. He tells her a lie (that he will be giving secrets to the East Germans) when he is actually a double agent, spying for the USA.

5. Where are Michael and Sarah from?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Washington DC

6. What is the name of the anti-missile project that Michael has worked on for six years in the US?

From Quiz "Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: Gamma-5

When Sarah at first believes Michael's lie, that he will be giving secrets to the East Germans, she asks him if it is because he feels he had wasted his time on the Gamma-5 project. He lies to her again and tells her if his work is not appreciated in his own country, then he hopes to find someone who will recognize his genius. Later, when the East Germans are questioning Sarah and she runs from the room, he catches up with her and tells her the truth.

7. What's the name of Michael's project that was canceled?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Gamma Five

The East Germans intend to get information on Gamma Five, while Michael intends to get information from them.

8. What was the excuse Michael made for Sarah when she didn't show up to a luncheon she had with a scientist?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: 'I believe she had a cold, stayed in bed.'

Sarah was in fact with Michael in his room...

9. When Michael and Sarah are watching the ballet and it is clear the German police will soon be getting to them, what does Michael do to cause a distraction?

From Quiz "Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: yells "Fire!"

They say it is a crime to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater, but Michael sees it as the only way out of his predicament. The plan almost backfires as, in the ensuing commotion, Sarah is separated from Michael and appears to be caught in the throngs that are hastily rushing to the exits. But this is the movies, folks, so just in the nick of time, Sarah is able to extricate herself and join Michael at the rear entrance, where their getaway vehicles are stashed.

10. What's the name of Michael's 'bodyguard' given by the East Germans?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Gromeck

11. When Michael and Sarah make their escape, what is the FIRST mode of transportation that they use?

From Quiz "Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: bicycle

The nurse, who is a part of the escape network, takes them to the stashed bicycles and tells them it is just a short ride on bikes (for some reason she says this twice) to catch up to the bus which will lead them safely out of East Germany.

12. Who suspects that Michael and Sarah are in the costume baskets on the boat?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: the ballet dancer

The ballet dancer is first seen as a plane passenger sitting next to Sarah, then she's seen in the actual ballet show and she is on the same boat with them and notices they are in the costume baskets.

13. When the East Germans are shooting at the baskets that are being loaded on the ship that they think Michael and Sarah are in, what is *actually* in them?

From Quiz "Torn Curtain", a 1966 Hitchcock Film

Answer: ballet costumes

The movie is somewhat unclear as to how Michael and Sarah got out of the baskets; it seems like, at first, Hitchcock is trying to make us believe they *are* in the baskets. When we see them swimming away from the ship, we realize that they have must have jumped overboard. When the baskets are opened, disclosing only ballet costumes, we then know that they are safe.

14. What is Sarah's middle name?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Louise

Garhart reads it off Sarah's passport.

15. What is the name of the doctor who helps Michael and Sarah escape?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Dr. Koska

16. What does Sarah say is a very 'unscientific line' that Michael says?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: 'Let's call THIS lunch and then go upstairs for breakfast.'

After Michael says this, Sarah says 'Michael, I'd say that was a very unscientific line.' And he says 'I'm not a scientist, I'm a teacher.' She says: 'You're a scientist. You're supposed to respect natural order in all things. Breakfast comes before lunch...ow (he nibbles her ear a little TOO hard)...and marriage should come before a honeymoon cruise.'

17. Did Paul Newman and Julie Andrews get along while filming?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Yes, they got along extremely well, Hitchcock was terribly surprised how well they took to each other

Paul Newman calls Julie Andrews 'the last of the really great dames'. This is said in a Julie Andrews biography, 'Julie Andrews: A Life On Stage and Screen.'

18. Where do Michael and Sarah originally go?

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: Copenhagen

They are supposed to go to Cogenhagen for a 'serious congress of physicists'.

From Quiz Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Answer: July

She says 'What's your position on a July wedding?'

20. How does Karl find out that Michael and Sarah are engaged?
