8. Despite Garp's eventual jokes about his name, Jenny Fields tells her parents exactly why she's chosen to name her baby T.S. Garp. What phrase, title, or name inspires her?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: Technical Sergeant

Jenny never learned the first name of Technical Sergeant Garp, the dying soldier who became, somewhat without his consent, the biological father of her son...so she did the best she could with the information she had.

9. Garp's mother Jenny Fields wrote a bestselling book. What was the title?

From Quiz The World According to Garp

11. Garp's relationship with Helen became strained when she cheated on him with one of her "Gradual" Students. What was his name?

From Quiz The World According to Garp

Answer: Michael Milton

Garp thought his name sounded like a flavour in a gay ice cream parlour. "Strawberry Swirl, Choc-full-of-Chocolate Mocha Madness, Michael Milton". Incidentally, "Gradual Student" was a running joke they used because Walt misunderstood "Graduate Student".

12. Given his vocation, where would Garp's father traditionally have been seated in an aircraft?

From Quiz The World According to Garp

Answer: Mr Holm

Garp's teammates called him "Holm Sweat Holm" and he was Helen's father. Dean Bodger was in charge of the faculty and overseeing things at the school. He claimed that he saved young Garp from falling off the roof, which of course he didn't.

14. Jenny and Garp's neighbors have a dog that bites young Garp's earlobe off. What is this dog's name?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Cushie and Pooh are the daughters of Stew Percy, the owner of the dog in question. Years later, Garp returns the favor and bites Bonkers' ear off!

15. Why did Garp continually bother with the plumber who was speeding through his neighbourhood?

From Quiz The World According to Garp

Answer: He kept running the stop signs.

When Garp was comforting Roberta he saw the plumber running the stop sign again and chased after him on foot. He threw a rock to stop him, took one of his pipes to smash the truck and told him that he was supposed to come to a full stop. "Children could've been playing, pregnant women blind people, old men. We are civilized people and civilized people obey rules!"

16. What favourite habit did Garp and Helen like to do?

From Quiz The World According to Garp

Answer: Look at the kids sleeping

Garp called himself a natural at only two things, wrestling and being a family man.

17. Why does Garp rather suddenly decide to become a writer?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: To impress a girl

Garp notes that Helen Holm constantly reads, and adds that she would probably only marry a man who was a writer. She agrees with that theory, and his course instantly becomes clear.

18. As Garp and Helen are being shown the house they plan to buy, something rather distressing happens to the house. What is it?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: An airplane crashes into it.

A single-engine prop plane, presumably suffering catastrophic mechanical failure, plows right into the side of the house. Garp takes this as a good sign -- 'The odds of another plane hitting this house are astronomical!' -- and agrees right then and there to buy the house.

19. Roberta Muldoon (John Lithgow) was, pre-sex-change, Robert Muldoon, a professional football player. For which NFL team did Robert Muldoon play?

Answer: The Philadelphia Eagles

More specifically, Robert Muldoon was a tight end, and his jersey bore the number 90.

20. Finish this quote from Roberta to Garp: 'The only thing you've inherited from your mother is your natural ability to _________________.'

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: piss people off

Said after Garp goes off on a reckless driver who constantly speeds and ignores stop signs in Garp's neighborhood. The driver responds by trying to run down Garp and Roberta with his truck!

21. A semi-successful alternative rock band took its name from someone or something featured in this movie. What is this band called?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: The Ellen James Society

'Sexual Suspect' is the name of Jenny Fields' best-selling book; 'Black Snow' is the name of a short story Michael Milton has written for Helen's class; and Roberta Muldoon is John Lithgow's character's name. The Ellen James Society, in the movie, is an ultra-radical feminist coalition who have taken the name of a woman who, as a child, was raped and mutilated. What that says about the Atlanta-based early-nineties band is for you to decide. Their albums include 'Reluctantly We' and 'The Survivors Parade.'

22. The last time that Garp sees his mother alive, she is boarding a helicopter some twenty yards away. He shouts something to her that she is unable to hear. What is it?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: 'I never needed a father!'

Given that Jenny dies in the very next scene, it's especially sad that she missed the chance to hear her son express this sentiment.

23. Garp rather unexpectedly meets up with the elusive Ellen James late in the film. She's played by an actress who, years later, would play a much larger role in another film with Robin Williams. Who is this actress?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: Amanda Plummer

Plummer would go on to play Lydia Sinclair, the true love of Williams' Henry "Parry" Sagan, in 1991's 'The Fisher King'...but hey, you already know this, since you've taken my quiz on that movie. =) Jenny Wright played the adult Cushie Percy, Garp's nubile next-door neighbor. Kinski and Lane have both acted with Williams (in 'Father's Day' (1997) and 'Jack' (1996), respectively), but neither of them are in 'The World According To Garp.'

24. What is the last complete sentence that Garp speaks to Helen at the end of the film?

From Quiz The World According To Garp

Answer: 'I'm flying.'

As a boy, Garp was obsessed with flying, mostly because his father was 'a flyer.' After having been shot multiple times at close range by an enraged 'Ellen Jamesian' (his former neighbor Pooh Percy, in fact), he is loaded onto an EMT helicopter to get him to a hospital as quickly as possible. He looks out the window and says to Helen, 'I'm flying.' He's still alive and smiling as the camera pulls away, but since he dies in the novel, I'd say his chances of survival are pretty slim.
