Withnail and I Trivia Questions

1. What item of food/drink is Danny offered by 'I' when he comes round to the flat at the start of the film?

From Quiz
"Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: A saveloy

For those who are unaware, a saveloy is a type of highly seasoned sausage. When offered the saveloy, Danny asks 'How much is it?' and seems surprised that 'I' is simply giving it to him. 'I' is previously seen spooning coffee from a bowl (Withnail thinks it is soup at first) because there are no cups, as neither of them have done the washing up. At one point early that morning Withnail refers to a raw potato being the only item of food he's had in the last 60 hours. At lunchtime Withnail suggests that they eat a pork pie as part of his plan to "miss out Monday but come up smiling Tuesday morning".

2. Complete this classic Withnail line. "I demand to have some ..."

From Quiz Quotes From "Withnail & I"

Answer: booze

"I demand to have some booze." A good answer guess in a quiz about 'Withnail & I' is alcohol. I'm not sure Withnail spends a single moment in this film either not drunk or not drinking. This quote occurs near the start of the film, when Withnail and 'I' are still in the flat in London. Withnail also laments his lack of a job in this scene. These early scenes are very important in establishing the level to which Withnail has sunk, both in terms of his career and his alcoholism.

3. In making the film, what was the very first scene to actually be shot?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Walking into Crow Crag Cottage.

The lake district scenes were all shot first.

4. What does 'I' scrub his boots with?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Essence of petunia

Guaranteed to get up the nose of Camden bruisers.

5. Who wrote and directed 'Withnail and I'?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Bruce Robinson

He also wrote and directed 'How to Get Ahead in Advertising' and 'Jennifer 8'.

6. According to Danny, a character known as the Coalman recently appeared in court, charged with drug smuggling, wearing two unusual items, against advice. What were the two items?

From Quiz "Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: A kaftan and a bell

Apparently the bell was the item that caused the problem ("they can handle the kaftan, they can't handle the bell"). The judge who, according to Danny, looked like Batman in his cape, was not impressed and said "this ain't fancy dress." The Coalman's response, which was, "You think you look normal, your Honour?", allegedly contributed to him getting a two year sentence.

7. Finish Uncle Monty's explanation as to why he cannot prepare the meat. "As a youth I used to weep ..."

From Quiz Quotes From "Withnail & I"

Answer: in butcher's shops

"I can never touch meat until it's cooked. As a youth I used to weep in butcher's shops." Monty is one of the more eccentric characters around. His passion for vegetables is unprecedented. At this time Uncle Monty is attempting to prepare a meal. He uses this as an excuse to make 'I' very uncomfortable, by invading his personal space quite badly. Withnail, of course, is enjoying the visit a lot more and spends a great deal of time drinking his way through Monty's extensive alcohol collection. Later we find out that Withnail has told Monty that 'I' is available, in order to procure the keys to the cottage, and Monty's behaviour towards 'I' through his visit to the cottage becomes more transparent.

8. Which member of The Beatles was the executive producer of "Withnail and I"?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: George Harrison

John Lennon, the other member of the Beatles, was dead when this movie was made, so including him as an option would have been silly.

9. Director Bruce Robinson was Oscar nominated for his screenplay for which film?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: The Killing Fields

He was nominated for 'The best screenplay based on material from another medium.'. Also, 'The Killing Fields' won best picture in that year, 1985.

10. What does Uncle Monty wear in his buttonhole?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: A radish

Monty also expresses admiration for cauliflowers and firm, young carrots.

11. What does Withnail allegedly grow as a hobby?

From Quiz "Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: Geraniums

When the boys go to see Uncle Monty to try and get the key to his cottage in the Lake District, his opening conversational gambit is to ask if the boys grow root crops. Uncle Monty believes that "the cauliflower is more beautiful than the rose" and asks Withnail if he "grows", to which Withnail replies, almost certainly untruthfully, "geraniums". Uncle Monty calls geraniums "little traitors" and offers the decidedly odd opinion that he thinks the carrot is "infinitely more fascinating than the geranium". Uncle Monty also appears to be wearing a radish pinned to his jacket in later scenes.

12. According to Danny, what do hairs do?

From Quiz Quotes From "Withnail & I"

Answer: "Pick up signals from the cosmos"

"Hairs are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight." These are words of wisdom from Danny - possibly the wisest idiot in the land. He speaks with such authority about everything that you almost believe him, until you think about what he's just said. This is the first of two times that we meet Danny in the film. He manages to rub Withnail up the wrong way quite quickly, with a derogatory remark about the suit that he is wearing. Danny threatens Withnail with a challenge to take "the embalmer", but sanity prevails on Withnail's part as Danny wants money for it. When Danny removes his glasses in this scene, we see the devastation behind the eyes. The audience is left in no doubt as to who would win in a competition between the two involving drugs. 'I' further backs this up with this comment to Withnail, "He's had more drugs than you've had hot dinners".

13. What do you do with a Camberwell Carrot?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: smoke it

A Camberwell Carrot, an incredibly huge joint, is so named because it was invented in Camberwell and shaped like a carrot.

14. Actor Ralph Brown practically reprises the voice of Danny playing 'Del Preston' in which later film?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Wayne's World 2

Director Bruce Robinson claims he took the amusing voice for the Danny character from a makeup woman he met at Pinewood Studios.

15. Which play does Withnail's final speech come from?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: 'Hamlet'

'It's a part I intend to play one day, Uncle.'

16. Who owned the country house where Withnail and I went on holidays?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Uncle Monty

A truly repugnant character, but in the end, you felt sorry for him.

17. What was the name of Uncle Monty's first theatrical agent?

From Quiz "Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: Raymond Duck

When the boys visit Uncle Monty at his house, the latter reminisces: "Indeed I remember my first agent...Raymond Duck...Four floors up on the Charing Cross Road and never a job at the top of them."

18. "Not the attitude I'd been given to expect from the H. E. Bates novel I'd read. I thought they'd all be out the back drinking cider, discussing butter." What prompts 'I' into saying this?

From Quiz Quotes From "Withnail & I"

Answer: A rather frosty reception from a country local

'I' tries to buy some food and fuel from the farmer's mother. He is unsuccessful and has the door slammed in his face, prompting this thought. This leads 'I' to the conclusion that country people are no more receptive to strangers than city dwellers. He goes back again and convinces the woman to tell him where he can get food and firewood.

19. What part of London does Withnail call home?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Camden Town

After the opening credits, the words "Camden Town, London, 1969" appear on the screen.

20. In the film, Withnail and Marwood are dropped off by Monty in Penrith to buy Wellington boots. They decide to go to the 'King Henry Pub'. Where was the real life location for the King Henry pub?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire

The Pub used was really called the 'King Henry'. No facade was used and the interior shots were also filmed there. Interestingly, the cake shop was also in Stony Stratford.

21. How many female speaking parts are there?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: 3

The rude schoolgirl, Mrs Parkin (the farmer's mother) and Miss Blennerhassit (the tea-room trout).

22. What sort of car did the boys drive to the country?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Jaguar

23. When the boys try to explain to the farmer that they are staying at the cottage and mention Uncle Monty's name to him, he doesn't recognise it. By what name does he know Uncle Monty?

From Quiz "Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: Adrian de la Touche

The farmer says "Aye, I seen the fat man. London type. Queer sort. Think his name's French or summat. Aye, Adrian de le Touche." Uncle Monty has clearly been using a false name and false history when at the cottage; the farmer also remembers that the last time Uncle Monty was at the cottage he was "with his son", which is obviously not the case.

24. Complete Withnail's demand of Miss Blennerhassit. "We want the finest wines available to ..."

From Quiz Quotes From "Withnail & I"

Answer: Humanity

"We want the finest wines available to Humanity. We want them here, and we want them now." This is one of many times that Withnail calls for a drink. It is perhaps one of the themes of the film. This particular occasion takes place in the Tea Rooms. The very drunk Withnail and 'I' upset some locals by ordering "cake and fine wine". They are generally being not particularly gracious, and are clearly drunk. The locals take exception to this and the police are called, but the pair leave before the phone call can be completed.

25. What song is played as a wrecking ball demolishes a building?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: All Along the Watchtower

Music figues prominently in this film about the end of the sixties. "Whiter Shade of Pale" is played during the opening credits.

26. How old was Richard Griffiths when he played Uncle Monty?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: In his thirties.

Griffiths was playing a considerably older character.

27. What is the name of the pill Danny taunts Withnail with?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: The embalmer

28. Where in London did the boys live?

From Quiz Withnail and I

Answer: Camden Town

A truly squalid flat where there were rodents in the oven and 'matter' in the sink.

29. What does Jake the poacher offer the boys when he first meets them?

From Quiz "Withnail and I" - The Ultimate Cult Film

Answer: A rabbit

When Jake comes into the pub, he has an eel and a pheasant about his person. When Withnail asks for some food Jake says that the pheasant is for the landlord's pot and the eel is for his (Jake's) pot. Although Withnail wants a pheasant, Jake relents and says "I might come and see you lads in the week, I might fetch you up a rabbit."
