Music from 1997 Trivia Questions

1. It's rather odd for a song that went to Number Four on the Billboard Top 100 Charts and Number One on Modern Rock Tracks to deal with addiction to crystal meth, but this one does. What's the song?

From Quiz
Ipod Shuffle 09: 1997 Billboard Top 100 Part 1

Answer: Semi-Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind)

"Semi-Charmed Kind of Life" was a huge hit in the summer of 1997. The fast uptempo song made a heavy contrast with what the song was actually about, crystal meth addiction. Stephen Jenkins, the lead singer of the band, wrote the song in response to Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side". The single features two different versions: the clean edit and the radio edit. The clean edit removed the reference to crystal meth.

2. Sir Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, the double-sided "Candle In The Wind 1997/The Way You Look Tonight" garnered the top spot for the year. The song, however, was originally written for what fallen icon when it first hit the chart?

From Quiz The Top Ten Songs of 1997

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

"Candle", originally written for Marilyn Monroe, only hit number six in its original chart run in the US. The remake spent fourteen weeks at the top of the pop chart and 28 weeks in the Top 40. "The Freshman" was The Verve Pipe's only single to break into the Billboard Hot 100 where it went to Number Five. The song went to Number One on the Modern Rock Charts. The band originally recorded the song for their 1992 album "I've Suffered a Head Injury". They re-recorded the track for their 1996 album "Villains".

5. After winning the Best New Artist Grammy in 1996 for "Blue", LeAnn Rimes came back strong with "How Do I Live", the number two song of 1997. What movie's soundtrack featured this song (performed on the soundtrack by a different artist)?

The song almost did the impossible: taking the top spot for the year without ever hitting number one and spending six months on 1996's pop singles chart. By the end of its chart run, Rimes's masterwork spent 61 total weeks on the pop chart, eleven weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart, went Top 10 on the Country Singles chart and spent four weeks at number two on the Pop Singles chart.
