Clothing in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Who had an amazing Technicolor dreamcoat?

From Quiz
Clothing Featured in Songs

Answer: Joseph

This is from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat', which was based on the story from the Bible about how Joseph's brothers were jealous when their father gave him a beautiful coloured coat, and sell him into slavery in Egypt.

2. Which British rocker took "You Can Leave Your Hat On", originally written and performed by Randy Newman in 1972, to position thirty five on the Billboard chart in 1986?

From Quiz Singing Out Your Closet

Answer: Joe Cocker

Randy Newman's original song was released on his album "Sail Away"(1972). Joe Cocker's cover version was recorded for his album "Cocker" in 1986 and this version was used on the soundtrack to the 1986 film "9½ Weeks" starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. Other cover versions of this song have been done by Etta James, Three Dog Night and Tom Jones.

3. "Two of us wearing raincoats" comes, of course, from a Beatles song. You're probably humming it right now, but can you tell me what the title of the song is?

From Quiz Two of Us Wearing Raincoats

Answer: Two of Us

From the "Let it Be" album. I was surprised to read that this song was apparently written for Linda McCartney - I always assumed it was some sort of message from Paul to John Lennon. Lennon did claim to write this song, in an interview, but reading the transcript makes it pretty clear that was just a momentary confusion. To anyone familiar with the Beatles' styles, this song is obviously a McCartney composition, and he sings lead.

4. This virtual illegitimate son of The King - although he mostly sounds as if Elvis is lying in a gutter, blind drunk, swearing unintelligible - sang about his "Pant Leg". What groundbreaking album by which genre-defying band was this song on?

From Quiz What a Load of Pants

Answer: "Extra Width" - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

"Extra Width" was released in 1993. Spencer's trouser mania didn't end there though. On his "Orange" album - released in 1994 - he sang the praise of those most dreaded of threads: "Bellbottoms". He even went as far as describing them as 'fabulous, most groovy. Ungh!'

5. In which movie would you hear the song 'Easter Bonnet'?

From Quiz Clothing Featured in Songs

Answer: Easter Parade

'Easter Parade' was a 1948 movie musical starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. The music was by Irving Berlin, and it also featured the very popular songs 'We're a Couple of Swells' and 'Stepping Out with My Baby'. It was the most financially successful movie for both Garland and Astaire.

From Quiz Singing Out Your Closet

Answer: Angie

"Angie" was recorded by The Rolling Stones for their 1973 album "Goats head Soup". The song was immensely popular and garnered nine chart first places world wide, including a top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and US Cash Box Top 100. It only managed a fifth place on the UK chart though. The album itself proved to be equally as popular, actually managing a first place on the UK charts as well as the US Billboard charts.

7. Who was "Barefootin'" in a 1966 funky dance tune?

From Quiz If the Shoe Fits...Sing It

Answer: Robert Parker

Doris Day is not funky! Robert Parker was born in New Orleans in 1930, and cut his teeth musically as a session saxophone player. He recorded with the likes of Fats Domino, Huey "Piano" Smith and legendary boogie woogie pianist Henry Byrd (aka Professor Longhair). His 1966 recording of "Barefootin'" sold a million copies and earned him a gold record. His solo career stalled in the 1970s, but he continued to play sax and record with other artists, maintaining some popularity, especially in the UK. He was inducted into the New Orleans Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and played in a tribute concert at the Lincoln Center in New York in 2009.

8. Oh yes, I used to look really smart wearing this with a pink carnation. Do you know what I was wearing?

From Quiz Two of Us Wearing Raincoats

Answer: You belong to me

10. Oh look! There's a rather elaborate hat in the laundry basket: it's like a turban piled high with fruit. Which musical lady owns this "tutti-frutti hat"?

From Quiz We're Going To Hang Out The Washing

Answer: Carmen Miranda

"The gentlemen they want to make me say, 'Si, si,' But I don't tell them that, I tell them, 'Yes, sir-ee!' And maybe that is why they come for dates to me, The lady in the tutti-frutti hat." Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha (1909-1955), the Portuguese-born singer known as Carmen Miranda, was already a star in her adopted country of Brazil when she came to the United States in 1939. The former hat-maker was called "The Brazilian Bombshell" by Hollywood, and was marketed as a stereotypically flamboyant Latin American character in several movies. Her song, "The Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat", comes from the 1943 musical movie "The Gang's All Here", a wartime morale booster directed and choreographed by Busby Berkeley. The film was initially banned in Portugal as Miranda's number was considered to be too suggestive.

11. When you want to appear cool and dandy, what do you need? A trouser press of course. What legendary freaks praised its existence? Though judging by the looks of them, they never even went near one.

From Quiz What a Load of Pants

Answer: The Bonzo Dog 'Doo Dah' Band

By the time of the release of the album "The Doughnuts in Granny's Greenhouse" (1968) - on which the song "Trouser Press" appears - the band had removed the 'Doo Dah' part of their name, to appear more palatable to the general public. "Trouser Press" also provided inspiration for some Americans when they started a music magazine and needed a name. The band later recorded another pants song, "Trouser Freak", which was included on the CD re-release of their 1972 album "Let's Make Up & Be Friendly". Their biggest hit, "I'm the Urban Spaceman", was produced by Paul McCartney, who used the pseudonym Apollo C. Vermouth.

14. In Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat", what had happened to the coat the last time we saw you?

From Quiz Two of Us Wearing Raincoats

Answer: It was torn at the shoulder

"Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train" Like most Cohen songs, this one is a little obscure, lyrically. The song seems to be about a love triangle, between the singer, a woman named Jane, and the unnamed "you". Cohen says, on "The Best of Leonard Cohen" liner notes: "I had a good raincoat then, a Burberry I got in London in 1959 . . . It hung more heroically when I took out the lining, and achieved glory when the frayed sleeves were repaired with a little leather. Things were clear. I knew how to dress in those days..."

15. Just look at these trousers - all faded away! A young lady called Layla brought them in for redyeing. Who will be disappointed if I can't brighten up their "Bell Bottom Blues"?

From Quiz We're Going To Hang Out The Washing

Answer: Derek and the Dominos

"I don't want to fade away. Give me one more day please. I don't want to fade away. In your heart I long to stay." The band known as Derek and the Dominos was formed in 1970 by guitarist Eric Clapton. They were plagued by the consequences of the drug culture of the time and also by personal tragedy: one member died in a road traffic accident, and Clapton was very much affected by the death of Jimi Hendrix, who had been a personal friend. By 1972, Derek and the Dominos as an entity had faded away. "Bell Bottom Blues" is a song about unrequited love, and was first released as a single on the Polydor label in 1970 as the B side to the rock classic, "Layla". Bell bottoms were a style of jeans with a wide flare on the lower leg and were very popular in the late '60s and early '70s.

22. What directionally hip songwriter and singer from Atlanta asked us to "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" in 1970?

From Quiz If the Shoe Fits...Sing It

Answer: Joe South

All the choices are real people, but Rap musician Kanye (born 1977) and Nine Inch Nails guitarist Aaron North (born 1979) were not alive in 1970. Neither was George Eastman (1854-1932), the inventor of the Kodak photography brand and company. Joe South, on the other hand, was at his peak in 1970, having already won two Grammy awards including song of the year in 1968 for his hard hitting contemporary ballad, "The Games People Play." He was an accomplished singer and guitar player, but earned even more fame when he penned the smash country hit "Rose Garden" in 1972, for Lynn Anderson. That song won her a Grammy and a couple more nominations for him. "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" has a powerful driving rhythm and strong message of tolerance which appealed to many other artists looking for meaningful material. Among those who covered the song was, you guessed it, Elvis Presley. South's version reached number three on the Adult Contemporary Hot 100 in 1972. He was born Joseph Alford Souter on February 28th, 1940, and he died in 2012.

From Quiz We're Going To Hang Out The Washing

Answer: Kilt

"Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low, Through the streets in my kilt I'll go, All the lassies cry, 'Hello! Donald, where's your troosers!'" "Donald, Where's Your Troosers?" is a traditional Scottish song telling the story of a kilt-wearing young man from the Isle of Skye (i.e. a rural lad) and his reception as he travels through the city streets, both in Scotland and England. There are several versions of the lyrics, but in all of them the Scottish pronunciation "troosers" should be used. The song was a hit in 1961 for kilt-wearing Scottish entertainer Andy Stewart (1933-1993) who was also known for compèring the BBC Scotland programme "The White Heather Club", which was a medley of music and dance from north of Hadrian's Wall. Other notable hits for this genial Scot included "A Scottish Soldier", "Tunes of Glory", "Campbeltown Loch", and "Dr. Finlay".
