Emilie Autumn Trivia Questions

1. Which song has the following lyrics: "You're so easy to read, but the book is boring me"?

From Quiz
Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Misery Loves Company

"Misery Loves Company" sounds like it's about a relationship, but several sources claim it's meant to be about Autumn's bipolar disorder, which crops up in several of her other songs, such as "Swallow" and "Manic Depression". The song continues "Pray for me, if you want to, pray for me, if you care."

2. Which song on 'Opheliac' is based on letters that Emilie Autumn's ex-boyfriend wrote to her?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: Liar

The letters contained phrases such as 'I want to mix our blood and put it in the ground, so you will never leave' and 'I'm hurting you for your own good.' The verses are from the boyfriend's point of view; the chorus is from Autumn's.

3. What song is this lyric from? "I am through lying still."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Fight Like A Girl

"Fight Like A Girl" is the title song of the album. The theme is focused on taking everything used against girls and turning it around. Therefore, the idea of "Fight Like A Girl" is that girls fight fierce. "Even if you're only a boy, you can fight like a girl."

4. Pick the song this lyric appears in: "I will cut you down, and I will run you through."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: I Want My Innocence Back

"I want my innocence back, and if you can't give it to me..." This song is probably one of the darker ones on the album. It begins with no actual instruments, and Autumn's voice is threatening. It may not be popular, but the first few lines will stick in your head for hours.

5. Which song on Disc 2 of the deluxe version of 'Opheliac' is a cappella, and based on a children's playground rhyme?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: Miss Lucy Had Some Leeches

'Miss Lucy Had Some Leeches' is a parody of 'Miss Susie Had a Steamboat', a playground rhyme where every verse sounds as if it's going to end in a swear word, but suddenly changes tack. E.g.: 'Miss Susie had a steamboat, the steamboat had a bell/Miss Susan went to Heaven, the steamboat went to Hell-o operator...' and so on. Autumn's version is much darker, and is about asylums, evil doctors and the abuse of female patients.

6. Where is this lyric from? "When I'm gone, you won't remember."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Thank God I'm Pretty

"Thank God I'm Pretty" is on the "Opheliac" deluxe bonus disc. The song is about the trials and tribulations of being beautiful, such as being harassed by men and being labelled, which does seem to be the focus of many of Emilie's songs.

7. Where is this lyric from: "Cause I know I'm the cursed one"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Shalott

"Cause I know I'm the cursed one, I know I'm meant to die..."The song is based on the poem "The Lady of Shalott" and it is one of Autumn's gentler songs, starting with a gentle sound of crashing waves. For that reason, it's probably one of the more popular songs.

8. In which song does the following line appear: "Will it hurt, no it won't, then what am I so afraid of"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Swallow

"Filthy Victorians, they made me what I'm made of." "Swallow" seems to revolve around taking the pill for the bipolar disorder Autumn has. The line suggests that she is scared about what will happen if she does swallow, but she doesn't understand why. Her mention in the next line, about Victorians, is a note to her interest in Victorian times.

9. Where does this lyric come from? "I've got a lot more words to say, but I just can't make them rhyme..."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Girls! Girls! Girls!

"They're half-price after four o'clock so toss us a dime, to see these lovely freaks of nature for a limited time..." This song is about girls in an mental hospital, and captures the way insanity was viewed in history, like animals. Emilie has spent time in a mental hospital and a lot of of her music deals with insanity, such as "Swallow", and "Manic Depression".

10. Where does this lyric come from: "A quick taste of the poison, a quick twist of the knife"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Dead is the New Alive

"When the obsession with death, the obsession with death, becomes a way of life." This song has the suggestion that death is inevitable, and in a way, dead is the new alive in Autumn's view because it's death of the soul. The style of the song is quite sharp, compared to some of the others.

11. How much do the pills for the asylum inmates cost in 'Girls! Girls! Girls!'?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: A tuppence

'For a tuppence, just a tuppence, a handful of pills to feed the inmates!' The asylum tour guide claims they have pills for depression, obsession, aggression, possession and indiscretion, amongst other things.

12. Which song is this lyric from? "But when the sun went down, the stars came out."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Rapunzel

"The stars came out, she heard them shout..." "Rapunzel" takes the concept from the fairy tale of the same name and turns it into a song about a girl who is locked up with no one to come for her. The concept is similar to "Shalott", a song from Emilie's album "Opheliac".

13. Which song has the following lyrics: "The kind of murder where nobody dies..."?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Gothic Lolita

"And I don't suppose you'd understand..." Autumn has been a victim of abuse and attempted rape, so this song may have a lot of truth in it. It's one of the most memorable songs on the CD. However, "My Fairweather Friend" is not on the CD at all.

14. Which two songs on 'Fight Like a Girl' contain the line 'I should be home by now, someone will come for me'?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: 'Scavenger' and 'We Want Them Young'

'We Want Them Young' is sung from the point of view of girls and the doctors in the fictional Victorian asylum around which the entire album is based. Autumn plays the role of all the characters on the album and uses her lower register when singing the doctors' lines, as well as the (presumably male) narrator in 'Scavenger', a song about a Burke & Hare-esque bodysnatcher. The line 'I should be home by now, someone will come for me' appears near the end of 'Scavenger'. In 'We Want Them Young', one of the asylum girls sings the same line, only for a doctor to respond that her parents were the ones that put her there in the first place.

15. In which song does this lyric appear: "Pretty and clean, conveys a theatrical scene"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: The Art of Suicide

"The art of suicide, pretty and clean, conveys a theatrical scene". Surprisingly, while the subject of the song is dark, the music and melody is the most gentle of all the songs on the album.

16. What was the name of the book released as a companion piece for 'Fight Like a Girl'?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls

'The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls' tells two stories. One is autobiographical and discusses Emilie Autumn's experiences of mental illness and mental health institutions. The other is a fictional story about Autumn discovering the diary of a Victorian girl called Emily, who has been imprisoned in a Victorian asylum where the doctors torture, experiment on and even kill the female patients - many of whom are not actually insane, but have merely angered their families - and where the patients are put on display for the public to stare at (as detailed in 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' on 'Fight Like a Girl'). 'Fight Like a Girl' is a concept album from Emily's point of view, which tells the story of the suffering of the girls in the asylum, and how they rebel against the doctors' cruelty.

17. Which song is this lyric from? "To call my name, here in my web of dreams".

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Rose Red

"My whispers turn to screams, and place the blame." There are many theories about what the song is about. Some people think it is about the loss of innocence, and others think that the character from "Snow White and Rose Red" was the basis for this song. Others suggest that the idea of the lines "Will I ever see thee wed" and "I'm doing fine" are related to Queen Elizabeth I.

18. Where is this lyric from: "I'll spend eternity comparing all my poetry to yours"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: Liar

This is probably one of the darkest songs on the album, and considering some of the others, that's saying something. On the outtakes of the album, you can hear Autumn practicing the chorus (sounding monstrous), and then remarking that she thinks her family would be "pretty freaked out" if they heard it.

19. Which song features the line 'the rain won't wash away the ashes underneath your nails today'?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: If I Burn

This line is part of the chorus of 'If I Burn'. Along with 'One Foot in Front of the Other', 'Time for Tea' and the title track, it is one of my favourite tracks on 'Fight Like a Girl'. It is also one of the more industrial songs - the album in general has a heavier, more industrial approach than Autumn's earlier albums.

20. Which song has this lyric: "Speak to me, don't leave me, he's burning me"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: God Help Me

This song is, in my opinion, one of the most forgettable songs on the disc. It has been theorized that the song is about some of the abuse Autumn suffered as a child.

21. What is the name of Emilie Autumn's backing band?

From Quiz Everybody in the Madhouse

Answer: The Bloody Crumpets

The Bloody Crumpets have had many members over the years; some are musicians, some are backing vocalists and/or dancers, and some perform circus tricks and burlesque acts. They all play fellow asylum inmates, and share 'tea' onstage with Autumn. Members have included burlesque dancer Veronica 'The Naughty Veronica' Varlow, German designer Janet 'Vecona' Seifert, Maggie 'Captain Maggot' Lally - who performs circus acts such as fire hooping and stilt walking - and Beth 'Blessed Contessa' Hinderliter, a fire eater and aerialist. 'Muffins' and 'Plague Rats' are nicknames for Emilie Autumn fans.

22. Finally, where does this song lyric come from? "She speaks in the third person so she can forget that she's me."

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics 2

Answer: Opheliac

This is the title song of the disc "Opheliac". It is based on the insanity of Shakespeare's character Ophelia from "Hamlet", who is thought to have drowned herself.

23. Which song has these lyrics: "I know the illness behind the image you create"?

From Quiz Emilie Autumn's Lyrics

Answer: I Know Where You Sleep

This song probably uses a lot of synthetic sound to make it sound as dark and terrifying as it does. It's theorized that this is Autumn's answer to a betrayal by someone she was close to!
