Lyrics Of Lonnie Donegan

Answer: Rock Island Line

"Rock Island Line" got to number eight on the UK Singles chart in 1955. [In 1956, it made two Billboard charts in the US, number eight on Best Sellers and number ten on the Top 100.] Its "B" side was "John Henry." "Lorelei" reached number ten in 1960, and "The Comancheros" checked in at number 14 in 1961. Anthony James Donegan, who became known as Lonnie Donegan, The King Of Skiffle, was born April 29, 1931, in Glascow Scotland of an Irish mother and a Scottish father. The family moved to East Ham, London, in 1933. During and after World War II, he learned to play the banjo and guitar, and formed the Anthony Donegan Jazz Band and performed along side others who were fans of New Orleans jazz. In 1949, the group disbanded when he was called for national service.

2. The first band Lonnie Donegan played in was a trad jazz band led by who?

From Quiz Lonnie Donegan - King of Skiffle

Answer: Chris Barber

Chris Barber asked Lonnie Donegan to audition for the band in the mistaken belief that he was a good banjo player. In fact he had never played the banjo, but he bought one and played it at the audition. Despite his lack of skill he was invited to join the band, and as part of Ken Collyers Jazzmen played in their Dixieland Jazz set. With two other musicians, one playing a washboard and one a tea-chest bass he also played an interval "skiffle break".

3. Lonnie Donegan's influence led John Lennon to form which group?

From Quiz Lonnie Donegan - King of Skiffle

Answer: The Quarrymen

Lonnie Donegan's first album "Lonnie Donegan Showcase" was so popular it spawned hundreds of amateur skiffle groups. Because the equipment needed was simple, washboard, tea-chest bass and guitar, these were cheap and easy to set up. In March 1957 John Lennon formed "The Quarrymen" skiffle group, and in July of the same year met Paul McCartney. The rest, as they say, is history.

4. "Well I'd not been in Washington Many more weeks than three When I fell in love with a pretty girl And she fell in love with me." Lonnie Donegan sang these words in which song?

In 1953, Lonnie Donegan joined the Ken Colyer Jazzmen with Chris Barber (trombone), and Monty Sunshine (clarinet). Colyer played trumpet, and Donegan sang and played banjo and guitar. In 1954, Colyer left the group, and it became Chris Barber's Jazz Band, featuring the popular female vocalist Ottilie Patterson.
