Herman's Hermits Trivia Questions

1. "I'm Into Something Good" was their first chart hit and only number one hit in the UK. It was a cover version first recorded by Earl-Jean McCrea of the Cookies. Who wrote the song?

From Quiz
The Music of Herman's Hermits

Answer: Goffin/King

Herman's Hermits took "I'm Into Something Good" to number one for two weeks on the UK chart in 1964. It reached number 13 on the US pop chart the same year. Incredible as it seems (to me anyway) this song was the first and only UK number one hit for the brilliant Goffin/King songwriting team. Earl-Jean McCrea's original version (by less that two months) reached number 38 on the US pop chart in 1964. It did not chart in the UK.

2. Which English city do Herman's Hermits originate from?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Manchester

They are regularly billed as a Manchester band. More specifically they are from the Urmston/Davyhulme area of the city, my own childhood home. Lead singer Peter Noone went to my school too - Stretford Grammar School for Boys.

3. 'Even in a crowd well, you'll pick her out, makes a ______ feel so proud'.

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: bloke

From the song 'Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter'.

4. Who "discovered" and produced Herman's Hermits?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Mickie Most

George Martin produced The Beatles. Alan Cheetham managed Manchester band The Hollies. Robert Stigwood managed The Bee Gees. Mickie Most quote; "Their manager sent me a photograph of Herman's Hermits at Picadilly Station in Manchester and Peter Noone looked like a young Kennedy. I thought this face is saleable, especially in the United States. All I need do is find cute songs to go with it".

5. 'All that's left is a place ______ and lonely.'

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: dark

From the song 'No Milk Today'.

6. There is only one thing you have to find here. Who is the lady who's got a lovely daughter in this song title?

From Quiz The Music of Herman's Hermits

Answer: Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter

"Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" was never released as a single in the UK. It was number one for three weeks on the US pop chart in 1965. It was written by Trevor Peacock (Jim Trott in the BBC sitcom "The Vicar Of Dibley"). It was sung by actor Sir Tom Courtenay in the UK TV play "The Lads" in 1963. Mrs. Green is group member Karl Green's mum. Mrs. Noone is Herman's (Peter Noone's) mum. Mrs Hayes is the Hermits record producer Mickie Most's (Michael Hayes's) mum.

7. In August 1964 Herman's Hermits released their first track which went straight to number one in the U.K. and provided a passport into America. Which song was this?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: I'm Into Something Good

"I'm Into Something Good" spent two weeks at number one in the U.K. and reached number 13 in the U.S.A. It also happens to be "our song" for wifey and me.

8. 'And I can't understand, no I can't understand why life ______________.'

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: goes on the way it does

From the song 'End of the World'.

9. "Lost control and rang your bell, I was sore Let me in or else I'll beat down your door" Whoa! The song's narrator is making quite a threat. What's the song?

From Quiz A High Old Time With Herman's Hermits

Answer: Silhouettes

The song centers around a man who sees the silhouettes of a couple kissing through the window-shade of a house he's passing by. Suspecting his girlfriend of two-timing him, he goes in to confront them... only to find out he had the wrong house. This doo-wop song was inspired when Bob Crewe saw exactly what the song talks about: a couple kissing through the window. He, along with songwriting partner, Frank Slay, Jr., wrote the song for the American rock group, The Rays. The song became the group's biggest hit, hitting the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in 1953. Herman's Hermits' up-tempo cover of the song also hit the charts at number five in 1965.

10. After their first, Herman's Hermits never had another U.K. number one, although they did have two U.S. number ones. What were these two number ones in America?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: "Mrs. Brown You Have a Lovely Daughter"/"I'm Henry The Eighth, I Am"

Both these tracks were somewhat novelty in nature, a direction Mickie Most did not want to pursue in the U.K. The band openly expressed their dislike of these songs.

From the song 'This Door Swings Both Ways'.

12. "You'll think she's a prize at the start But take my advice, play it smart She's nothin' but trouble Better cut out on the double Before she gets into your heart" This song carries quite the warning about a certain girl. What's its title?

From Quiz A High Old Time With Herman's Hermits

Answer: A Must to Avoid

This song was written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri in 1965. The song is featured on the Hermits' album, "Hold On!", the title track of which was also penned by Sloan-Barri.

13. "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" was a 1968 feature film starring Herman's Hermits. But who or what was Mrs. Brown?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: A racing dog

This period film is all about the boys buying into a whippet dog which they train and take to London to race. Accepting that the boys were singers and not actors then this film cheerfully depicts the halcyon days of 1960s Britain. Nostalgic to the core, don't watch this if you know Manchester from those days as just about everywhere shown in the film is now demolished and redeveloped.

14. 'Buy you ______ _____ from Paris and have sweet things to say.'

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: fancy clothes

From the song 'Just a Little Bit Better'.

15. "Everybody's got to love somebody sometime Everybody's got to win a heart Everybody's got to love somebody sometime When you do, I hope you never part" What song by the Hermits do these uplifting lyrics belong to?

From Quiz A High Old Time With Herman's Hermits

Answer: Listen People

The movie "When The Boys Meet The Girls", which starred Connie Francis, featured Herman's Hermits singing this song. A host of other musical artists also made their appearance in the movie, including Liberace, Louis Armstrong, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

16. Can you find the missing word in the title of this song? "This Door ________ Both Ways"

From Quiz The Music of Herman's Hermits

Answer: Swings

Herman's Hermits had a number 18 hit on the UK chart with "This Door Swings Both Ways" in 1966. It reached number 12 on the US pop chart the same year. Herman's Hermits formed in Manchester UK as Herman & The Hermits in 1963. The group has had various members but the most recognizable line up is Peter Noone (Herman) vocals, Keith Hopwood guitar & vocals, Derek Leckenby guitar & vocals, Karl Green bass and Barry Whitwam drums. The sixth Hermit might be considered to be their producer Mickie Most who had a lot of influence over their material and clean cut image. Seems I've heard that story somewhere before but then they did rival The Beatles in the US for a short while.

17. Herman's Hermits recorded "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" as an afterthought in two takes. The lead guitarist muted his guitar to create an almost ukelele like sound. Who was this highly accomplished guitarist/band member?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Keith Hopwood

Barry Whitwam was the original drummer with Herman's Hermits. Peter Noone was lead singer with Herman's Hermits. Jimmy Paige was allegedly used as a session player on some tracks long before hitting the big time with Led Zeppelin. Keith Hopwood used a Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar in the studio recording but a Rickenbacker on stage. On stage he would put a rag under the bridge to reproduce the distinctive sound.

19. Peter Noone was also a child actor. In which British "soap" did he appear in playing the character Stanley Fairclough?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Coronation Street

20. Which 1966 track was released in the U.S.A. that is perhaps more associated with George Formby on his ukelele?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Leaning On A Lamp Post

"Leaning on a Lamp Post" was released in the U.S.A. in April 1966.

21. 'Lost control and rang your bell, I was sore, let me in or else I'll ____________.'

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: beat down your door

From the song 'Silhouettes'.

22. "Don't know much about geography Don't know much trigonometry Don't know much about algebra Don't know what a slide rule is for" What's the name of this song whose narrator doesn't care much about school and academics?

From Quiz A High Old Time With Herman's Hermits

Answer: (What A) Wonderful World

Well, as long as he has his girl's love, school, apparently, means nothing. "(What A) Wonderful World" was written by Americans Lou Adler, Herb Alpert and Sam Cooke in 1959. After Cooke's death in 1964, Herman's Hermits recorded and released their version as a tribute to Cooke. The song would give the Hermits one of their biggest hits, as it reached number four on the Billboard Top 100s in 1965. Cooke's original version had topped at number 12.

23. What was the Christian name line-up of Herman's Hermits?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Peter, Derek, Karl, Barry and Keith

The band consisted of Peter Noone (lead vocals), Derek Leckenby (guitar and vocals), Karl Green (bass and vocals), Barry Whitwam (drums) & Keith Hopwood (guitar and vocals). The incorrect answers placed Peter with members of The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones.

24. 'Woke up this morning feeling fine, there's something special ___________.'

From Quiz Herman's Hermits Lyrics

Answer: on my mind

From the song 'I'm into Something Good'.

25. Peter Noone had just one solo hit with a version of a David Bowie song released in 1971. It reached number 12 in the U.K. Which song was this?

From Quiz Herman's Hermits

Answer: Oh You Pretty Thing

Bowie released this song in 1971 on his "Hunky Dory" album. Thanks for playing. Peter Noone was asked to play this quiz via his website www.peternoone.com. What a great guy, he keeps very close to his fans through this. He tells me he scored 10/10 on this 07.04.07. I can't prove this but hell i couldn't disbelieve one of the worlds nicest guys. Thanks Peter
