Horslips Trivia Questions

1. This album was Horslips' most successful release in the UK, reaching number 39.

From Quiz
Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: The Book of Invasions

"The Book of Invasions" included the track "Trouble With a Capital T" which is the name of this quiz. The album had the subtitle "A Celtic Symphony" highlighting the mixture of Rock and Traditional music.

2. In what year did the original Horslips line up (Barry Devlin, Eamon Carr, Charles O'Connor and Jim Lockhart) form?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: 1970

Originally the band formed after they were talked into being a fake band for a Harps Lager commercial in 1970. They enjoyed doing this so much that they decided to turn the pretend band into a real band and added guitar player Declan Sinnott as well as Gene Mulvaney. Originally they called themselves Horslypse. They decided to make everything legit and professional on Saint Patrick's Day in 1972. Having dumped Mulvaney, they released their first single on their own label.

3. What was the cover of their first LP "Happy To Meet, Sorry To Part" designed to look like?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: An Irish button accordion

The octagonal, dye-cut gatefold sleeve is a photo of an Irish button accordion. It was reissued a few years back in Japan as an exact replica "mini lp cd". that looks amazing and has all the elements of the first vinyl pressing intact. If dye cut covers are your thing this album is just about the ultimate dye cut cover (offhand I cannot think of a more intricate one - the vinyl version must have cost a small fortune to manufacture). The cover also included the lyrics printed on octagonal pages as the booklet included in the gatefold. Seriously people: you have got to cop a visual on this album at least once in your life. The album was originally issued by the band on their own 'Oats' label in 1972.

4. The opening lines of which Horslips track go this way? "High on the mountains stands a boat, But are they gods or real folk? We can't see the fire but we smell the smoke. Who'll take the plough? Who'll be the yoke?"

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: Trouble With a Capital T

"Trouble With a Capital T" was a fan favorite for Horslips and featured in most of their public performances.

5. For a short while in 1976/1977 it appeared as if Horslips might finally achieve a commercial breakthrough in the USA, as they were getting a decent amount of airplay on FM radio. What were the two albums that received the airplay?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: 'The Book Of Invasions' and 'Aliens'

Yeppers: they got a substantial amount of airplay in Los Angeles on KROQ (seriously. KROQ was not always a "Rock of the Eighties" thing. I heard Marshall Tucker Band on KROQ for the first time as well way back when!), KWST and I think even KMET back in 1976 and 1977. They also headlined at the West Hollywood club 'The Starwood' (one of the highest capacity clubs in LA prior to the "Country Club' in Reseda and 'The Palace' in Hollywood).

6. Which Horslips album was based on "The Cattle Raid of Cooley", an infamous legend of early Irish literature?

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: The Tain

Including tracks such as "Charolais", "Dearg Doom" and "Faster Than the Hound" this was a great album. Released in 1973.

7. Which Horslips band member went on to head of production for RTE 2fm?

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: Jim Lockhart

Jim achieved an IFTA (Irish Film and Television Awards) nomination for his 2008 score to "Cre na Cille". This was a film adaptation to a novel written in the Irish language.

8. Prior to the resurgence of interest in Horslips well after their go-round, they had retired. What year did they originally call it quits in?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: 1980

In 1980 they gave up and split. Some of this might be due to their problems with their manager or they just plain might have felt they had gone as far as they could.

9. The second Horslips album was a concept album. It was recorded at the request of the Abbey Theatre Group for their stage adaptation of "The Cattle-Raid of Cooley", a tenth century tale. What was the album and the stage production entitled?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: The Táin

'The Táin' might very well be the very first Irish Rock concept album. It centered around 'Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley)', which is perhaps one of the most infamous legends of early Irish literature. It deals with the war between Ulster and Connacht - a war over a prize bull! YOU try and write a concept album about that! The original 1973 vinyl pressing included a very limited edition poster.

10. What was the title of Horslips' debut album?

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: Happy to Meet - Sorry to Part

Considered to be the first ever Celtic Rock album. The album's name is also the title of an Irish jig. The other answers are also titles of Horslips albums.

11. What is the concept of the Horslips album "Aliens"?

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: Irish emigrants to America after the potato famine considered themsleves as aliens.

"Aliens" is the second part of a trilogy following on from the album "The Book of Invasions".

12. In 2013 a book abut Horslips was published. What is the name of this book?

From Quiz Horslips

Answer: Tall Tales

The book, 'Tall Tales: The Official Biography' was published on February 3, 2014 and was written by Mark Cunningham. Unfortunately other than what I have written here I cannot mention anything further about the book (I did not even know there was a book about this band until researching questions for the quiz earlier today!) as I have not purchased a copy yet and I can find no further info about it. The two reviews I can find on Amazon give it 5 out of 5 stars, so it's probably well worth owning.

13. To which Horslips album was "Guests of the Nation" the opening track?

From Quiz Trouble With a Capital T

Answer: Short Stories/Tall TAles

This was to be Horslips' final album before their break-up in 1980. An album was recorded by the group in 2004 after their reunion.
