3. How long did it take the people mentioned in the song to gain their landrights?

From the lyrics: "Gather round people let me tell you're a story An eight year long story of power and pride British Lord Vestey and Vincent Lingiarri Were opposite men on opposite sides".

4. 'Every dog will have his day, any dog can win' is from

From Quiz From Little Things (Big Things Grow)

6. 'After all it was late, the girl would keep, she was going nowhere' is from

From Quiz Songs From The South - Paul Kelly

Answer: Everything's Turning to White

This is from the 1989 album 'So Much Water so Close to Home'. This version was recorded live at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

7. What was the name of the Indigenous man who led the strike, according to the lyrics?

From Quiz From Little Things (Big Things Grow)

Answer: Vincent Lingiarri

From the lyrics: "Vincent was lean and spoke very little He had no bank balance, hard dirt was his floor". Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander who advocated Indigenous land rights, and the other two mentioned are Indigenous musicians. There are several different spellings for Lingiarri, but as all Australian Indigenous languages are oral in origin, it's hard to say which is correct. In my own area, a word can be pronounced differently fifty kilometres apart. One example is the word for "spirit" which I pronounce "jannock" and 50 km east of here is pronounced "charnock".

8. What is the title of the Paul Kelly song that tells the tale of four men who embark on a weekend fishing trip in the mountains, discover a human body and fail to report it until after the weekend?

From Quiz Paul Kelly: Songwriter

Answer: Everything's Turning to White

All of the above options are related. The song 'Everything's Turning to White' is based on a short story by American writer, Raymond Carver, called 'So Much Water so Close to Home', which, coincidently, is the title of Paul's 1989 album that contains the song. The song and story then became the inspiration for the 2006 Australian movie 'Jindabyne', directed by Ray Lawrence and starred Gabriel Byrne, Laura Linney and Deborah Lee Furness (Hugh Jackman's wife). The tale is also one of the nine short stories (and one poem) that were interwoven into the 1993 Robert Altman film 'Short Cuts', which starred Fred Ward, Buck Henry and Huey Lewis in the roles of the fishing buddies.

9. 'Had a radio, a six pack and some cigarettes, the radio died after the first hundred miles..' is from

Answer: Love Never Runs on Time

This is from the 1994 album 'Wanted Man'. Vika and Linda Bull provide the backing vocals on this track.

10. The following line is from which Paul Kelly song: "Shove it Jack, I'm walking out your (expletive) door!"

From Quiz Paul Kelly: Songwriter

Answer: To Her Door

That line is possibly the most recognizable of Paul's lyrics. It provides a bridging between the first verse and the chorus. In concert, it's not unusual for Paul to stop singing while the audience shouts it out. 'To Her Door' is on Paul's 1987 album 'Under The Sun' and it tells a bittersweet story of a broken marriage and the family's attempt at reconciliation.

11. 'Could he make a picture and get them all to fit?' is from

This is my favourite Paul Kelly song, and probably a favourite among many Aussies who love their music. This is from the 1987 album 'Under the Sun'.

12. In the song, what was the name of the group of people making the land claim?

From Quiz From Little Things (Big Things Grow)

15. In which Asian city did Paul Kelly and his band record Paul's second album, which was subsequently named after the city?

From Quiz Paul Kelly: Songwriter

Answer: Manila

Paul's first two albums "Talk" and "Manila" were both recorded with his band 'The Dots'. Ever the perfectionist, Paul has remained unhappy with the results of these two recordings, to the point that he refuses to acknowledge them as part of his discography on his official website.

16. 'He was just a kid in from the sticks' is from

From Quiz Songs From The South - Paul Kelly

Answer: Bradman

This song, as you can tell from the title and lyrics, is obviously about Australian cricket great Sir Donald Bradman. This is also from 'Under the Sun'.

17. Where did their leader go to seek support?

From Quiz From Little Things (Big Things Grow)

The lyrics: "Then Vincent Lingiarri boarded an aeroplane Landed in Sydney, big city of lights And daily he went round softly speaking his story To all kinds of men from all walks of life". The song was produced by Alan Thorne and Paul Kelly.

18. In what year was Paul Kelly inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame?

From Quiz Paul Kelly: Songwriter

Answer: 1997

Despite Paul's pre-eminence as a songwriter in Australia, at the time of his induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, he'd released ten successful studio albums, however, only one of his singles had ever charted in the Top Ten of the Australian music charts - 'To Her Door' which peaked at Number Six in 1988.

This song is from the album 'So Much Water so Close to Home'. Paul Kelly's first band was named 'the Dots'.

22. After several years, the land claim was granted. How was Vincent told they had won?

From Quiz From Little Things (Big Things Grow)

Answer: A politician and lawyers came and told him

"Eight years went by, eight long years of waiting Till one day a tall stranger appeared in the land And he came with lawyers and he came with great ceremony And through Vincent's fingers poured a handful of sand". The song was first recorded in 1991.

23. Which Jimmie Dale Gilmore song was the inspiration for Paul Kelly's song "Sydney from a 727"?

From Quiz Paul Kelly: Songwriter

Answer: Dallas

The opening line from 'Dallas' reads: "Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night" and can be found on Jimmie's self titled 1989 album. Paul's number opens with a similar line "Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night". He pays homage to the source of his inspiration with the last line by declaring "Me, I've never seen Dallas from a DC-9" Thank you for playing.
