Like the band's prior two album covers (for "Touch Up" and "O My Heart"), Mother Mother chose to feature an animal. While their earlier releases featured a chicken and a fish, "Eureka" displays the close-up face of a roaring lion in a rainbow of colours. Unlike their previous albums, the cover does not feature the band's characteristic triple-scratch, a shape which would be front and center on the group's fourth album, "The Sticks". Instead, the scratches appear on the disc itself (not literal scratches...that would be bad).

Originally named Mother, the band changed their moniker in 2007 and re-released their first independent album under the name "Touch Up", getting them noticed in Canadian indie rock circles for their distinct style and harmonies. This first album was a product of Last Gang Records, a production company with Metric, Death From Above 1979, and Lights under their name. "Touch Up" contained a number of quirky songs with the original band line-up. "Oh Ana", one of the most popular, was just one of the few to contain unique tempo changes and riffs throughout. Likewise, songs like "Verbatim" and "Dirty Town" continued to be fan favourites, played at concerts several years and albums down the line despite never being released as official singles.

Losing drummer Kenton Loewen and vocalist Debra-Jean Creelman after the completion of "O My Heart", the remaining three members of the band welcomed drummer Ali Saidat and vocalist/keyboardist Jasmin Parkin in time for their subsequent tour (though their work does not appear on the original album). This made "Eureka" their first official album. Both members appear in the music videos for "Body of Years" and "Hayloft", the singles from "O My Heart", indicating how soon after the album's release they were added in.

"O My Heart" was both the first song and the title song of Mother Mother's second album released in 2008. Less than three months after this sophomore album, band members Debra-Jean Creelman and Kenton Loewen (vocalist and drummer) were replaced by Jasmin Parkin and Ali Siadat, respectively. Nevertheless, "O My Heart" contained a number of songs which would become Mother Mother standards. Less 'poppy' than "Touch Up", the album featured the same harmonies and meaningful lyrics but packed more of an emotional punch. The song "O My Heart", the band's first-ever single (but the second to receive a music video) charted at number twenty-four on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart.

"The Stand" is the only one of the three choices to appear on the "Eureka" album and it also happened to be the first single released off it. Reaching number three on the Canadian Alternative Chart, it was the band's most famous song to-date. The video premiered in early 2011, around the time the album was released in March. The video for "The Stand" was a bit crazy, like the album artwork, because it featured the band, outfitted in kooky outfits and hairstyles, performing against a constantly changing backdrop, evoking Rorschach tests and psychedelics.

Answer: Body of Years

One of my personal favourites, "Body of Years" was chosen as the second single from "O My Heart" and, after its music video was released (featuring a colour scheme evoking their fish-head album artwork) the song hit number twelve on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart, the highest off the album. "Body of Years" became a fan favourite, especially at concerts. Since the song's release, live renditions of the song have been tweaked to begin with the performance proper before segueing into a cover of The Pixies' "Gouge Away". The live version of the song appears on the band's first iTunes Live Session release.

Answer: Chasing It Down

While both "Had It All" and "Bright Idea" were released after "Eureka" appeared (the former as an unreleased B-side and the latter as a single on iTunes), "Chasing It Down" was the first track on the disc, leading off a consistently whimsical album. The lyrics of this song foreshadow the album's tendency to mix things up a great deal with tempo, style, and atmosphere. The lyrics state: "Turn around your life or we'll change Without your consent Without your okay It happened again I woke up today And everything changed"

Answer: Hayloft

Despite the repetitive lyrics, this fun single, the third and final from "O My Heart", became one of the band's most popular. Though it only hit number forty-three on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart it became a live staple for the band who, during some concerts, have performed it twice in one gig; once would be performed at the brisk tempo of the original while the other would be performed slowed-down on an acoustic guitar. The colourful music video for this single was released in 2009. The song is about two lovers in a barn-- the girl's father, a farmer, comes in with a gun to break the couple up and the pursuit begins.

"Getaway", appearing more than halfway through the album, showcases the voice of secondary harmonizer Molly as she takes the reins, much as she did at the end of the "O My Heart" album in "Sleep Awake". The tradition was followed up in "The Sticks" with the final track, "To the Wild". Molly, like Jasmin, typically plays keyboard and sings in the tri-vocal harmonies the band excels with. "Getaway" is about someone who simply wants to get away from it all and dreams of flying anywhere else. "Forever and a Bit" was sung by Jasmin Parkin; it was an unreleased B-side sent to fans shortly after the release of "Eureka" (and before their next album, "The Sticks").

"The Stand" was a hit for the indie band. Aside from reaching number three on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart it also went to number seventy-six on the Canadian Hot 100 (their first time on that chart) and number forty-eight on the Canadian Rock Chart. Presented almost like a dialogue between lead singer Ryan Guldemond and the female vocalists (Emily Guldemond and Jasmin Parkin), the music video was created like a session in an otherworldly psychiatric exam. This song also marked a change in the band's music-- the previous two albums had been recorded with the original band line-up. With the addition of Parkin's strong, experimental vocals and Siadat's new drum beats, "Eureka" reflected a more upbeat side of the band.

Ali Siadat, the new drummer for Mother Mother as of this album, ended up co-writing the disc's second single, "Baby Don't Dance", with lead singer and songwriter Ryan. The song reached number eleven on the Canadian Alternative Chart, topping all of the band's other songs (beside "The Stand"). The video, partly an homage to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", featured the band playing the song in a white room and included many of the colours and images seen on and in the album and throughout their tour for the release. Answer: Baby Don't Dance

Another fun, upbeat single, "Baby Don't Dance" was the second to be released from "Eureka" after its 2011 release. It found success on the charts as well, reaching number eleven on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart. Notably, the video for this song was, for the most part, made by by the band itself; it featured images suited to their album artwork, yet again, particularly shots of colourful objects flashed upon the screen. Yes, there was dancing too. It was written by lead singer Ryan and drummer Ali. This song and the long-anticipated wait for the album resulted in it peaking at number eight on the Canadian Albums chart.

Although the "Eureka" album featured all four of these songs (though "Carve a Name" was a bonus track featured on iTunes and in special edition versions of "Eureka"), "Simply Simple" was the only one with these lyrics. Although performed live by the band for a few years before the release of this disc, it took until track six of "Eureka", a down-tempo moment, before it made an official appearance in the band's discography. "Simply Simple" was co-written by singer Ryan Guildemond and bassist Jeremy Page. It was the third and final single from the disc; it did not receive a music video.

Although this was the third single (and the last) released from "Eureka" in 2011, "Simply Simple" was far from being new territory for the band; the song had been tweaked and teased in live performances for several years before it was felt suitable to appear on one of their albums. It finally appeared on this third release from the band. Although used as a single, the song does not have a music video. It did, however, chart at number twenty on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart upon its release. Some versions of the song are performed without the backing bass and drums; the tri-vocal harmonies are strong enough to carry the most of the song, much like "O My Heart's" "Ghosting".

"Like an oleander White white leaves, of an oleander White like me" The penultimate song on the disc, "Oleander" includes both down-tempo verses and an up-tempo chorus marked by harmonies. Not an official single from the disc, it led into a faster-paced final song, "Calm Me Down", which ended the album on a bang. Oleander is a poisonous, flowering plant often found in the wild, but also used in cultivated gardens.

Released as a promotional song before the release of "The Sticks" in 2012, this song was performed live long before the rest of the track listing was known to the public. A distinct turn in style from the band's prior works, "The Sticks" features a heavy drum beat, keys, and distortions to set the tone-- it would become the second song on the album after an introductory track entitled "Omens". Before the quick release of "The Sticks", less than two years after "Eureka", Mother Mother released a number of b-sides and promo singles. "Forever and a Bit" and "Had It All" were both left off the "Eureka" track listing and released for free at later dates while "Bright Idea" became a commercial jingle for Kraft Foods-- it later appeared in full on iTunes as a stand-alone track.

"Original Spin", the fourth song on the album, epitomizes what "Eureka" is all about-- finding a sound. Eclectic, to say the least, but tightly-composed, "Original Spin" starts out slow but ends up switching beat and tempo throughout, constantly reinventing itself, amping up, and finding original spins for the tune. Much of the same is echoed throughout the disc as the band flips between fast and slow, perhaps searching for their "Eureka!" moment.

Answer: Let's Fall in Love

The first official single from "The Sticks", "Let's Fall in Love" hit the radio airwaves in mid-2012. Considerably more pop-centric than earlier works by the band, it was radio-friendly enough to push the band up to number three on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart, the same rank occupied by "Baby Don't Dance" the previous year. It also peaked at number thirty-five on the Canadian Rock chart, their highest position on it to date. A video for "Let's Fall In Love" featuring the band in a boxing ring was released shortly after the album. Much like the song, the video touched on the metaphorical boxing matches fought in relationships.

Reaching number twenty-three upon its release on the Canadian Alt-Rock chart, "Bit By Bit" was another success for the band. Another creative take on a basic beat, the song varies between a monotonous verse and a fast-paced chorus. The video for this single was shot in the desert-like landscape of Big Sky Ranch in California and released in late 2012. "The Sticks" marked the fourth in a contract of four releases with Last Gang Records. At this point, the songs were produced by Ryan, the lead singer, and unheard singles were released successfully (and for free) to fans online. "The Sticks" reached number eleven on the Canadian Albums Chart.
