Elliot Smith Trivia Questions

1. Elliott Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 6th, 1969, under what given name?

From Quiz
Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: Steven

He started calling himself "Elliott" after he graduated from high school, as he felt that his given name, Steven, wasn't fitting. He wrote music in his younger years under the name "Elliott Stillwater-Rotter", but eventually settled on "Elliott Smith."

2. Elliott released three studio albums before his "big break" in 1997 with his song "Miss Misery", which appeared in what critically acclaimed film?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: Good Will Hunting

Elliott was skyrocketed into stardom, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He was invited to perform the song at the Oscars that year, but was hesitant, and only did it when he was told another musician would perform the song in his place. He performed, but in the end, did not win. However, this break put him into the mainstream and he garnered unprecedented attention. He was given the nickname "Mister Misery" based on this song, and his recurring use of melancholic lyrical content.

3. Elliott was a member of a band that acheived some local success in the Portland, Oregon area in the early 1990s. Along with Elliott, the band featured Neil Gust (of No. 2) and Sam Coomes (of Quasi). Can you name this band?

From Quiz Elliott Smith

Answer: Heatmiser

Heatmiser formed in 1992 and released three studio albums. At the time of the release of the last album "Mic City Sons" in 1996, Elliott had already released two solo albums.

4. What tragedy nearly ended Elliott Smith's life in 1998?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: Suicide attempt

Elliott, while intoxicated, threw himself off a cliff, but survived when a tree broke his fall. He ultimately refused to discuss it in interviews. He was vocal about his desire to end his own life in the time leading up to this attempt, citing depression and drug abuse.

5. Elliott performs a beautiful rendition of the Beatles' "Because" at the end of this movie. The movie won Best Picture along with four other awards including Best Writing for Alan Ball. Do you remember the title?

From Quiz Elliott Smith

Answer: American Beauty

Elliott was never one to stick to a setlist and often called upon the audiance for requests. He loved to do covers, especially the Beatles, including the following: "Long, Long, Long," "Yer Blues," "For No One," I'm So Tired," "I'm Only Sleeping," "Something" and "Revolution."

6. At the height of his addiction and personal troubles, Elliott would perform live, but what would generally happen?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: He would forget his songs

Elliott would often stop in the middle of songs because he would forget both the lyrics and the guitar chords. Many concert-goers complained, but Elliott would just move on to a different song...and he would forget that one as well. Critics believed that his career was on the verge of collapse.

7. Can you name this Elliott Smith song? "The judge is on vinyl, decisions are final And nobody gets a reprieve And every wave is tidal If you hang around, you're going to get wet I can't prepare for death any more than I already have"

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: King's Crossing

My personal favorite Elliott Smith song, this comes off of his final studio album "From a Basement on the Hill", released in 2004, a yer after his death. Many of the tracks, such as this, contain lyrics that allude to drug addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The album, upon its release, was perceived as Elliott's suicide note.

8. On October 21st, 2003, Elliott Smith committed suicide by what?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: Stabbing himself

His girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba, had locked herself in their bathroom to shower after they got into a loud argument (neighbors even testified that they could hear them screaming at each other). According to Chiba, Elliott asked her to come out, and when she refused, she heard him scream and rushed into the room to find Elliott with a steak knife in his chest.

9. Elliott's "Needle In The Hay" is featured prominently in a Wes Anderson film as "Baumer" attempts suicide. Name the film.

From Quiz Elliott Smith

Answer: The Royal Tenenbaums

Elliott often ventured into dark themes such as suicide, lost love and drug addiction. Oddly, though, a lot of his music actually sounds happy! The coroner's report is inconclusive, but it is believed that Elliott took his own life.

10. Why is Jennifer Chiba believed by some to have murdered Elliott?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: She removed the knife from his chest

Chiba, who had medical training, removed the knife from his chest, which is the worst thing one cold possibly do, as it makes the wound worse and causes more bleeding. In addition, she refused to speak with investigators after first responders took her statement.

11. How old was Elliott Smith when he died?

From Quiz Mister Misery - The Tragic Story of Elliott Smith

Answer: 34

At the age of 34, Elliott had released five albums, all over the course of six years, with two others being released by labels in the years following his untimely death. Friends have said that they are certain he committed suicide, but that if he hadn't, he would be a "superstar" in today's world.

12. Name the album NOT released by Elliott Smith.

From Quiz Elliott Smith

Answer: Something

Elliott's 2000 release of "Figure 8" expanded his use of orchestration and foreshadows the good things to come on "From A Basement On The Hill."
