R.E.M. Trivia Questions

1. Which R.E.M. song begins with the lyrics "Oh, life is bigger, it's bigger than you, and you are not me"?

From Quiz
"Nightswimming" and other R.E.M. songs

Answer: Losing My Religion

Released in 1991, "Losing My Religion" was an unlikely hit for the band. It was written around guitarist Peter Buck's attempts to learn how to play mandolin and wasn't the record company's choice as first single from the album "Out of Time." It went on to reach number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and won two Grammy Awards and six MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year and Best Group Video.

2. We'll open the quiz with the one of the most critically acclaimed albums in R.E.M.'s discography: "Automatic for the People". A band member from what band provides string arrangements on "Nightswimming" and "Everybody Hurts"?

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 24: R.E.M.

Answer: Led Zeppelin

John Paul Jones, former band member of Led Zeppelin, worked with R.E.M. on "Automatic for the People". The album had six singles. It has been my experience that there are a handful of albums that become a constant mainstay in one's life. "Automatic for the People", along with Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited", Love's "Forever Changes", and The Doors' "The Doors" are four such albums for me.

3. Which song are these lyrics from?: 'You're plasticine. That is obscene.'?

From Quiz In Time: The Best Of R.E.M 1988-2003

Answer: Electrolite

The lyrics go: 'Twentieth century go and sleep. You're plasticine. That is obscene. That is obscene. You are the star tonight. You shine electric outta sight. You light eclipsed the moon tonight. Elecrolite.' R.E.M. decided on their name by flicking through a dictionary.

4. What words come next in this R.E.M. lyric? "The bull and the bear are marking their territories"

From Quiz The Time's Still Ripe to Rhyme with Stipe

Answer: They're leading the blind with their international glories

"Daysleeper," the first single from 1998's "Up," their first work after drummer Bill Berry left the group. The song is about people who work the night shift then have to sleep during the daylight hours using blindfolds and sound machines to cut them off from outside sensation. Michael Stipe said that the members of R.E.M. are a bunch of daysleepers.

5. What line correctly completes the REM lyric quoted below? "Beside yourself if radio's gonna stay Reason: It could polish up the grey Put that, put that, put that up your wall"

From Quiz The Time is Ripe to Rhyme with Stipe

Answer: That this isn't country at all

"Radio Free Europe" from 1983's "Murmur." It was their first hit song, albeit to a fairly underground audience, although it was also exposed on such mainstream shows as "American Bandstand." Murmur later won Rolling Stone magazine's album of the year honor for 1983 - not bad for their first full-length record.

6. "When your day is long, and the night, the night is ___________."

From Quiz R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts"

Answer: yours alone

This song is off of R.E.M.'s 1992 "Automatic for the People" album, which was certified 2x platinum that very year. In 1993, it was certified 3x platinum, and again in 1995, it was certified 5x platinum. The album also includes two other popular R.E.M. hits entitled "Drive" and "Man on the Moon."
