Music T-Z: 'U' Trivia Questions

1. Who has been the only constant member of UFO since their formation in 1969?

From Quiz
UFO

Answer: Phil Mogg

Mogg formed the nucleus of the band in London when he was 21 years old. They were originally called Hocus Pocus and changed to UFO in 1969. In 2018, Mogg announced that the 2019 tour celebrating 50 years of UFO would be his retirement tour.

2. What is Midge Ure's actual first name?

From Quiz Vienna. The Life and Music of Midge Ure

Answer: James

It is strange how nicknames are created, and Ure's nickname certainly bears that out. The shortened version of James is Jim, which when written backwards becomes "mij", pronounced midge, hence Midge Ure.

3. In 1969 keyboard player Ken Hensley was solicited by Bronze Records to join a band already signed to their label. What group was Hensley previously with?

From Quiz Uriah Heep

Answer: Toe Fat

Ken Hensley was with Toe Fat when Bronze Records executive and producer Gerry Bron asked him to join an already existing band on his label called Spice. Collectively the group then changed their name to Uriah Heep. The original lineup of Uriah Heep was Ken Hensley on keyboards, David Byron on vocals, Mick Box playing guitar, Paul Newton on bass guitar and Alex Napier on drums. David Byron, Mick Box, Paul Newton and Alex Napier were the members of Spice (formerly The Stalkers) before becoming Uriah Heep. Alex Napier had recently replaced drummer Nigel Pegrum, who had left to join folk rock legends Steeleye Span. Singer John Lawton was with the German band Lucifer's Friend before joining Heep in 1976.

4. The first song on the album, 'In Regards to Myself' opens with which line?

From Quiz Underoath- "Define The Great Line"

Answer: Wake up, wake up, My God, this is not a test!

"Wake up and step outside your box. Wake up!" is the closing of 'In Regards to Myself,' not the opening. "Just what are you so afraid of?!" occurs later in the song. "Someone please turn the lights back on, I've been wandering here for days" is the first line of the song 'Moving For the Sake of Motion.'

6. Taken from their 1970 debut album, which Eddie Cochran track provided the band with a hit in Japan?

From Quiz UFO

Answer: C'mon Everybody

"C'mon Everybody" was the fourth single released from the "UFO 1" album. Like the previous three, it failed to chart in UK or USA but the Japanese rock fans took it to their hearts and the Japanese version of the record, complete with lyric sheet and picture booklet, is now quite valuable and much sought after.

7. In 2010, Ure released the album "10", which contained his interpretations of his favourite songs. Which song written by Bacharach and David did he open the album with?

From Quiz Vienna. The Life and Music of Midge Ure

Answer: Alfie

"Alfie" (1966) was written by Bacharach and David for the movie "Alfie" of the same year, which starred Michael Caine. The song was a top ten UK hit for Cilla Black in 1966 and in USA, Cher took it to number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in the same year, while Dionne Warwick climbed to number 15 on US Billboard Hot 100 in 1967.

8. "The feeling has gone, only you and I It means nothing to me This means nothing to me" It meant a lot to Ultravox, being their first real major hit. Now put the lighter in the air and sing along: "OH ...."

From Quiz Ultravox - A "Sleepwalk" until "All Fall Down"

Answer: Vienna

Foggy cobbled street and a horse, a guy in a trench coat, a long staircase, a spider running over a face...the video was inspired by the movie "The Third Man", but only parts of it were filmed in Vienna. Most of it was done in London; one location was a former cinema. As the record company didn't pay up for a video, the band had to organize the video by themselves. They did well. "Vienna" came out in January 1981 and while it reached number one in some countries of the European continent, it stopped at number two in Britain. As John Lennon had recently been shot his song "Woman" was at the top -the next weeks saw a certain Joe Dolce with his novelty song "Shaddap You Face" blocking the highest spot. Nevertheless, "Vienna" became the Ultravox signature song, easy to recognize at the first drum beat. In 2012 BBC 2 listeners voted it Britain's favourite Number Two.

9. Which lyrics are from 'Writing on the Walls'?

From Quiz Underoath- "Define The Great Line"

From Quiz Ultravox - A "Sleepwalk" until "All Fall Down"

Answer: Hymn

For once the glory came with a little success in the US, when the album "Quartet" soared up to a staggering rank 61! It fared better in the UK, up to number six and was produced by George Martin, the man who had worked with the Beatles. The first single from this production was "Reap the Wild Wind" which was their only single ever entering the US Billboard top 100, ending up at number 62, in UK number 12. "Hymn" (UK number 11) had a video with a story: each band member was first shown in a somehow humble position, then a guy with very shiny green eyes offered a contract and success happened. A short lived success as you might guess... What some fluorescent contact lenses can do. Quite impressive.

Unfortunately, Way had a contract with UFO's record company from which he couldn't escape, and even though he had formed the band, half named the band and recruited ex Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and future Flogging Molly vocalist Dave King to the band, he wasn't able to record or tour with them. Clarke recruited Charlie McCracken from Rory Gallagher's band, Taste, as bass player, and in order to fulfill his contract. Way joined Ozzy Osbourne's band as bass player.

22. In 1971 Lee Kerslake became Uriah Heep's drummer. Who did Kerslake work with after leaving Uriah Heep in 1979?

From Quiz Uriah Heep

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

He played with bass guitarist Bob Daisley on the sessions and Daisley later joined Uriah Heep. On the "Diary of a Madman" notes Kerslake and Daisley aren't credited. 26. In 1980 the group released the album "Conquest". Who sang lead vocals on the album?

From Quiz Uriah Heep

Answer: John Sloman

John Sloman replaced John Lawton and was the vocalist on "Conquest". The LP was not well received by Heep fans which contributed to Ken Hensley's departure in September of the same year. Mick Box picked up the pieces and carried on with a new singer named Pete Goalby who had been with the band Trapeze. Two early 1980s releases were "Abominog" and "Head First". The albums changed the band's sound to a more contemporary style and generated renewed interest in Uriah Heep among glam metal fans. Vocalist Bernie Shaw has been a member since 1986.

Answer: Joe Dolce

Although all four possible answers had huge hits in 1981, with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Ennio Morricone reaching number two and Shakin' Stevens reaching number one, it was the novelty hit "Shaddup You Face" (1981) that kept Midge and Ultravox off the top spot for three weeks.
