Venus Trivia Questions

1. Venus Williams may be a pretty hot tennis player, but Venus is the queen of hotness. What temperature would be typical for the planet Venus?

From Quiz
Venus is Hot!

Answer: 860° F

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It has the hottest surface temperature of all the terrestrial planets. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, but is, on average, several degrees cooler than Venus. Since Mercury has a very thin atmosphere, the night side of Mercury can get extremely cold. Temperatures on Venus' surface can exceed 860° F (460° C) no matter the time or season due to its thick atmosphere.

2. Venus is often called the Earth's "sister planet". Why is this?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: They are of similar size and mass

For a long time, Earth and Venus have been called sisters. Earth is only slightly larger and more massive, but they would appear to be nearly the same if viewed next to one another.

3. Venus is the Roman goddess of love. Her Greek counterpart is Aphrodite, but what is the Babylonian counterpart?

From Quiz Our Sister Planet Venus

Answer: Ishtar

Anu is her father and Ereshkigal (goddess of the underworld) her sister. Tammuz was her lover but also her brother.

4. From Earth, which planet is brighter than Venus?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: None

Although Jupiter's magnitude can reach -2.5, it can't match Venus' magnitude of -4. Only the Sun and the Moon are brighter than Venus, but they are not planets!

5. Why can rovers not be sent to the surface of Venus?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: It gets too hot near Venus's surface

Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System, reaching a blistering 735 Kelvin at the surface. The intense heat would destroy any electronics of probes that would be sent in.

6. Venus's alchemical symbol is also the female symbol. This symbol also symbolizes a day (Friday) and a metal, which?

From Quiz Our Sister Planet Venus

Answer: Copper

Astrologers would say that it's the circle of life above the cross of spirit. Others would say it's the circle of unity above the cross of Earth.

7. What is the density of Venus?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: 5.2 that of water

Earth's density is 5.5 that of water, making Earth slightly more dense than Venus. Mercury fits in between Venus and Earth at 5.4 times the density of water.

8. The average surface temperature of Venus is very high - about 737 on which scale?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: Kelvin

The Kelvin scale is used to measure extreme temperatures, and 737 K is roughly equivalent to 464 °C (867 °F). It is actually hot enough to melt lead. This is, in part, due to the extremely high surface pressure on Venus, roughly 92 times higher than on Earth, which prevents heat from escaping. In effect, Venus has the largest greenhouse effect of all the planets in the Solar System.

9. Venus Williams has a sister named Serena. Venus, the planet, has a sister as well. Which planet is often considered to be Venus' sister?

From Quiz Venus is Hot!

Answer: Earth

Venus is considered to be the Earth's sister since the two planets are very close in size to one another and have a similar composition. Venus has a diameter of 7,520 miles (12,100 km) while the Earth is slightly larger with a diameter of 7,916 miles (12,739 km). Many scientists speculate as to what caused Venus to develop so much differently than the Earth. Some scientists speculate that Venus may have had liquid water and possibly even microbial life at some point in its early history.

10. The core of Venus is ~3000 km in radius. It is most possibly partly molten and consists of:

From Quiz Our Sister Planet Venus

Answer: Nickel and iron

All inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) and the moon have the same inner structure; a nickel-iron core surrounded by a mantle of silicate above which there is a silicate crust.

11. The ancient Greeks thought Venus was two different planets, what did they call them?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: Phosphorus and Hesperus

Phosphorus meaning morning star and Hesperus meaning evening star. Zeus and Apollo are gods, According to the Roman legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome and Remus was his twin brother. Laurel and Hardy were a comedian act.

12. What is the surface gravity of Venus relative to Earth?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: 0.91

Venus actually has a surface gravity that is relatively similar to Earth's. 0.91 means that it isn't quite as strong as Earth's, but if it weren't quite so hot on Venus, we would actually find it not too difficult to walk on Venus' surface! Although the surface pressure is another issue.

13. Maria Sharapova is another famous tennis player. Her home country became the first to land a spacecraft on Venus. What was the name of the spacecraft that accomplished this feat?

From Quiz Venus is Hot!

Answer: Venera 7

Maria Sharapova is a tennis player from Russia (formerly the Soviet Union). During the Space Race, the Russians sent several Venera probes out to study the planet Venus. Venera 1 was launched on February 12, 1961 and Venera 2 launched on November 12, 1965, but they both failed. Venera 3 was the first to make a successful fly-by of Venus. Venera 4-6 successfully made it to Venus, but they were not designed to survive the landing. Venera 7 launched August 17, 1970 and became the first spacecraft to successfully land on another planet. The probe transmitted data from the surface for 53 minutes before eventually succumbing to Venus' harsh environment.

14. What are Venus's clouds mostly made of?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: Sulfuric acid

The high amounts of sulfuric acid are what gives Venus its scorching hot temperature and its immense atmospheric pressure. The other choices listed are also prevalent in Venus's atmosphere, but do not form clouds.

15. What is the rotation period (day) of Venus in Earth days?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: 243 days

Because Venus spins slower than Earth, it takes it much longer to complete a day. Although it only takes 225 days to orbit the sun, it still spins slower than that. On Venus, every day is about 8 Earth months, while every year is about 7.5 Earth months!

16. The prime meridian of Venus passes through what distinguishing surface feature?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: The central peak of a crater

Specifically, it goes through the peak of the crater Ariadne. Before the Venera probe scanned the surface, the prime meridian was thought to go through a very different environment.

17. Venus axial tilt is?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: 177.3 degrees

More than any other planet!

18. In 1990, which space probe accomplished the most detailed observations of Venus at that time?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: Magellan

The Magellan Venus mission reached Venus in 1990, and it made the first map of the entire Venus surface and gravity field. In 1994, it touched down on the surface of the planet. The first intentional probe crash, the Magellan probe gathered information on the atmosphere and surface conditions of Venus before it burnt.

19. For the sake of this quiz, let's say that Venus Williams is 40 years old. Approximately how old would she be in Venusian years?

From Quiz Venus is Hot!

Answer: 65

Venus orbits the Sun once every 224.7 days while the Earth orbits the Sun once every 365.25 days. Therefore, if Venus Williams was 40 years old on the Earth, she would be 65 years old if she lived on Venus. If you wanted to feel younger rather than older, then you'd have to go to Mars or beyond. To see how old you would be on Venus, just multiply 1.63 by your current age.

20. Approximately how many centimeters of (not necessarily water) rain hit Venus's surface each year?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: 0 cm

It does rain in Venus's atmosphere, but the rain evaporates 25 kilometers above the surface, so none gets to the surface. The only places in the Solar System where it is known to rain onto a solid surface is Earth and Saturn's moon Titan.

21. The mass of Venus is?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: .81 times that of Earth

Besides the mass and size of Venus being similar to Earth, it has little in common with the Earth.

22. What is odd about the way Venus spins?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: it spins backwards

Venus spins backwards relative to the other planets. This is called retrograde rotation. Because of this, Venus' days work in reverse to Earth's: the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, opposite to on Earth. Venus is the only planet in the Solar System to move with retrograde rotation.

23. If Venus Williams were to date a man with the same name as Venus' tallest known mountain range, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, what would his name be?

From Quiz Venus is Hot!

Answer: Maxwell

Maxwell Montes is the tallest mountain range on the planet Venus. It was discovered by scientists in 1967 using the Arecibo Radio Observatory in Puerto Rico. It is located in a large highland region of the planet known as Ishtar Terra. Skadi Mons, the tallest peak of Maxwell Montes, stands at a height of approximately 35,100 feet (10,700 m) above the planet's surface. For comparison, Mount Everest on Earth stands at approximately 29,000 ft (8,840 m).

24. About how old, on average, is the crust on Venus thought to be?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: Up to 600,000,000 years old

The average age of Earth's crust is nearly 100,000,000 years old. It is constantly renewed due to the crust sinking into the mantle and being recycled, then spewed back out through volcanoes. On Venus, however, the crust is much older, and recycling that crust is a much slower process.

25. Venus is the _____________ largest planet?

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: sixth

From largest to smallest; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars and Mercury.

26. On Earth, clouds are composed of water vapor. What do the clouds on Venus consist of?

From Quiz Venus

Answer: sulfuric acid droplets

Although sulfuric acid does not make up the entirety of Venus' clouds, it does comprise a large portion of them. Sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid are the main ingredients, and these heavy clouds assist in creating the high temperatures and greenhouse effect on Venus. It has been discovered that these clouds are capable of producing lightning!

27. Imagine if Venus Williams wanted to lob some tennis balls into the tallest volcano on Venus. Which volcano would she be able to do this at?

From Quiz Venus is Hot!

Answer: Maat Mons

Maat Mons is the tallest volcano, as well as the second tallest mountain on the planet Venus. It stands at a height of more than 26,000 ft (8,000 m) above the surface. Scientists believe that, like Earth, Venus was at one time geologically active with volcanoes operating similarly to those found on the Earth. At the time of writing, it is unknown if the planet is still geologically active today. Perhaps one day, with better space exploration technology, mankind will be able to discover more of what Venus' clouds hide.

28. What is strange about Venus's magnetosphere?

From Quiz Venus, the Gold Star

Answer: It is not generated like most are

Most magnetospheres are generated by having a differentiated core, meaning the core has an inner solid layer and outer molten layer. However, Venus's magnetosphere is produced by interaction between solar wind and its ionosphere. Due to this unorthodox magnetic field, it is more or less negligible when it comes to protection from cosmic radiation.

29. Venus is the brightest object in the sky after Sol and Moon. Therefore it's been known since prehistoric times. For a long time it was thought to be two different objects. What did the Greeks originally call them?

From Quiz Our Sister Planet Venus

Answer: Eosphorus and Hesperus

Aphrodite is (as written above) the Greek counterpart to Venus. Hephaestus is her husband (the smith god). Kypris and Cytherea are two alternative names for Aphrodite. Hymenaios and Aeneas are two of Aphrodite's sons. Eosphoros and Hesperus are simply the morning and evening stars. They are the sons of Eos (goddess of dawn) and Astreaus (father of stars).

30. The atmosphere of Venus is _________ times denser than the atmosphere of Earth.

From Quiz Twenty Questions About Venus

Answer: 90

About the same pressure that is exerted on a object 1 km deep in Earth's oceans!
