1. Who was the Flying Officer who played in three premiership teams (52 games) but was sadly killed during WWII?
From Quiz It's a Grand Old Flag: Melbourne FC
Answer:
Syd Anderson
Sydney Louis Anderson (1918-1944) was a member of the 1939,1940 and 1941 premiership teams. He only played those three seasons of VFL football and 52 games for the club. He was killed in action in New Guinea in 1944.
Keith " Bluey" Truscott (1916-1943) played in the 1939, 1940 premiership teams, playing 50 games. He was the second highest WWII flying ace and was killed in WA on a training exercise.
Harold Ball (1920-1942) played in the 1940 premiership team playing 33 games and was captured, tortured and executed by the Japanese in Singapore.
Ron Barassi Snr.(1913-1941) played in the 1940 premiership team, played 58 games and was killed in action at Tobruk.
The club also lost the following former players during WWII: Jack Atkins, Noel Ellis, Clyde Helmer, Derek Mollison, Ted Regan, Beres Reilly, Archie Roberts and Barney Wood. Unfortunately, there were many other footballers from other clubs who had their careers cut short by WWII. Also there were many who survived the conflict but had lost the best years of their lives to participate in this great game of ours.
