The Players Championship was played on the Stadium Course, the more challenging of the two courses at the TPC Sawgrass. The Stadium Course was designed by Pete and Alice Dye in 1980 and in 1982 it hosted its first Players Championship. Before modifications were made the course was widely believed to be too difficult. About the course Ben Crenshaw famously said "It's Star Wars golf, designed by Darth Vader".
