Billy Slater joined Melbourne Storm in 2003 as a winger befor he was transferred to fullback, hi spreferred position. He has played for representative sides such as the Maroons (Queensland State of Origin), Australia and the NRL Allstars. Before he became a Melbourne Storm star, he was a jockey working at the horse stables in Innisvale, Queensland.

On 22nd April 2010 the Melbourne Storm club admitted that they had been rorting the NRL salary cap since 2005. It was achieved with two sets of books which hid an extra millions in payments to the players. The club was stripped of their 2007 and 2009 premiership titles, and their 2006, 2007 and 2008 minor premierships, fined over a million dollars. In addition they were stripped of all competition points they had earned at that stage of the season, and would be stripped of any further points they earned by winning (i.e. they eanred zero points for winning and zero points for losing). If the Storm were allowed to compete for points they would have finished 5th in the competition with 14 wins, 10 losses, 489 for points and 363 against points. They would have finished just below the Gold Coast Titans and just above the New Zealand Warriors. The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, who finished 8th on the ladder, would not have made the finals series if the Storm had been awarded points.

He replaced Daniel Anderson whose contract was terminated. Stephen Kearney had been assistant coach at the Melbourne Storm since 2006, a club he also used to play for from 1999 to 2004. Before 1999 he had played for the Western Suburbs Magpies and Auckland Warriors. Stephen Kearney was also the New Zealand coach at the time (he was appointed NZ coach in 2008).

The Melbourne Storm were founded in September 1997, the first rugny league club in the AFL dominated state of Victoria. The Melbourne Storm joined the NRL competition in 1998, won their first 4 matches and finished 3rd on the ladder to qualify for the end-of-season finals in their first year. They lost in the grand final qualifier to Brisbane Broncos, who went on to win the grand final. The Storm went one better in their second season, when they made it to tjhe grand final and were crowned 1999 premiers, beating St George-Illawarra Dragons in the grand final.

The Australian representatives, coached by Tim Sheens, were Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk. The New Zealand representatives, coached by former Melbourne Storm assistant coach, Stephen Kearney, were Matt Duffie (on debut) and Adam Blair. The test was scheduled to be played in Christchurch NZ, but due to the disastrous earthquake two months earlier on 22nd February, it was transferred to Skilled Park on the Gold Coast. The final score of the game was 20-10 to the Australian team. This was the 12th ANZAC Test between the two nations; and all 12 of them have been won by team playing at home.

Israel Folau played his last game for the Storm in 2008, after he signed a 2 year contract with the Brisbane Broncos. This was a much needed signing for the Brisbane Broncos with the departure of several key players and their head coach Wayne Bennett (who moved to the St George-Illawara Dragons). Israel played his first game for the Broncos in round one in 2009 against the North Queensland Cowboys, also scoring the first try which assisted the Broncos to a 19-18 win. He left the Broncos and the NRL competition at the end of the 2010 season to play in the AFL cmpetition.
