Middlesbrough had played at Ayresome Park since 1903, they moved to the Riverside Stadium after the 1994/95 season. The move was forced by the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough Stadium disaster which recommended that for safety reasons football stadiums in the higher tiers of English football should be all seater stadiums, this would have required major modification of Ayresome Park and so it was decided that it was better to move to a new, purpose built stadium.
