Mayor Martin Griffin was the man who had the foresight to construct the track. It was originally called Mount Panorama Scenic Drive when it was opened in 1938, but quickly got converted for car and motorbike races. Cook and Leichhardt are early Australian explorers and Jack Brabham was a champion Formula One driver of the 1950s and 60s- he tried, but never won the big race. When it is not being used by very fast vehicles, the road is still quite a scenic drive. It is best to obey the speed limit when driving there, however, as the local constabulary have been known to target wannabe car-racers.
