Endeavour Trivia Questions

1. In the pilot, we see Endeavour lives in the police officers' housing. He is typing a letter. What is the topic of the letter?

From Quiz
"Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: His resignation

He never hands it in. It is also not explained why he wants to resign. Thank goodness, though, because it would have put a stop to a successful career. His sister's name is Joyce. We don't see her very often.

2. Early in the episode, we see Detective Constable Morse lives in the police officers' housing. He is typing something. There's also a radio on. What type of music is he listening to?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Classical

The character is regularly shown as not liking or paying attention to then-current popular music. The whole national presence of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and so on passed him by. He couldn't be happier.

3. In "Home," the last episode of series one, a close relative of Morse's passes away. Who is it?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: His father

Endeavour doesn't have a brother, and we never meet his uncles or cousins. He doesn't have a lot of friends, either. We don't usually see examples of what he does on the weekend.

4. Early in the episode, Endeavour moves to a new flat (apartment). He has a vision. Who or what does he see?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: A woman

This person is not identified by name, in the scene itself. However, it is strongly hinted that she is Susan Fallon, his former fiancee. She broke up with him. Later on, Endeavour is talking to an old professor, and the man mentions "Susan, who lived on St. John's Street."

5. In the second episode of the first season, "Fugue," he meets someone at the door of his supervisor's house. Who is this person?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: Joan Thursday

Joan is Inspector Thursday's daughter. She assertively tells Morse to come in. Over the years, Endeavour and Joan build up a close friendship. Peter Jakes is a fellow policeman, Dorothea Frazil is a reporter for the Oxford Mail, and Max DeBryn is the coroner.

6. Endeavour is sent from Carshall Newtown Station to help out with a troubling case at Crowley Station. Who is Morse's new supervisor, the Detective Inspector?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Fred Thursday

Thursday is played by Roger Allam. Over the years, he becomes a father figure to Morse. Endeavour never goes back to Carshall Newtown Station.

7. The murder victim, Margaret Bell, is lying face up on the bed. Morse finds some dirty clothes from Beaufort College. What was unique about Beaufort College?

From Quiz "Endeavour", Series One, Episode One: "Girl"

Answer: They did not admit women

The college appears purely in the story. It is fictional; its name was made up by Colin Dexter, who invented Morse and most of his literary friends. Other characters were thought up by "Endeavour's" only writer, Russell Lewis.

8. Endeavour's love life is spotted with mostly negative encounters. In season two, he dates someone with whom he's got something special. Who is she?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: Monica Hicks

Susan was his former fiancee. They got engaged while he was at university. Then she broke up with him. Monica is a nurse. He abandons Monica at the beginning of series three, and we don't see her again until series four, when he has to visit the hospital where she works. Ludwig and Jones are real-life opera singers.

9. During this episode, and this one alone, Endeavour says he does not indulge in a particular habit. Which one is it?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Drinking alcohol

"I don't drink," he says. DCI Thursday orders a beer for him, however. Over the years, Morse becomes quite the imbiber. He often overindulges when he has a broken heart.

10. Chief Superintendent Bright asks DCI Fred Thursday why he wants to bring Morse along on the gas meter and house break-in case. What do we learn from Mr. Bright's statement?

From Quiz "Endeavour", Series One, Episode One: "Girl"

Answer: Morse had a "failed degree" - he quit before he could graduate

Morse did serve in the military, but it was in the Signal Corps of the Army. He dropped out of St. John's College, Oxford. "You know, of course, that means nobody knew what to do with him!" Mr. Bright says. DCI Thursday keeps his faith in Morse, and it pays off.

11. In the beginning of series three, we see Endeavour is living in a cabin in the woods. He's chopping wood. What is he wearing?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: His work clothes

He is out in the woods after he has served a short jail sentence. He was arrested at the end of series two. After this sojourn in series three, he goes to parties at a mansion. It becomes related to a case.

12. Morse interviews an Oxford student, Bryan Lomax. Lomax had a roommate, Miles Percival, who is believed to have committed suicide. Morse asks Lomax if Percival liked to do a certain thing together. What was that?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Complete the crossword in the newspaper

Lomax says Percival "could never stick a crossie." Lomax is played by Sam Reid.

13. Another death occurs. The victim is a doctor. This time, what killed him?

From Quiz "Endeavour", Series One, Episode One: "Girl"

Answer: Gunshot

As you'd expect, the scene is gruesome. Coroner Max DeBryn lifts a hand in the air, traces the way to the bullet, and uses a pair of medical pliers to pull the item from the wall.

14. In series three, Joan wants to leave town. This is because she was traumatized at the bank where she worked, when it was robbed. Endeavour catches up to her. What does he say?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: "You mean everything in the world to your parents. You mean everything in the world to-"

He stares at her while he says this. It is plain that he meant to say "Me," but he just can't get the word out. Joan leaves town, and goes through a disastrous relationship in series four.

15. Endeavour has to use a car when he picks up DCI Thursday. What make is it?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Jaguar

The car does not belong to him. In Colin Dexter's books, he eventually gets his own Jaguar.

16. Joan meets up with a new boyfriend in series four. Who is this man?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: Ray Morton

Ray Morton is cheating on his wife. Jim is an officer who befriends Morse. Pheloung is a composer who created the music for this show and for the original "Inspector Morse" series. Neil Duncan is one of the producers of the show.

17. Endeavour meets the local coroner, Dr. Max De Bryn. What do the two men almost immediately do?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Snipe at each other

De Bryn tells him, "They have a word for people like you: necrophobic." It means afraid of death. Morse responds that he would like to use an Anglo-Saxon word, instead of a Greek one. We can guess what he's thinking.

18. The arrest of Morse's break-in suspect is met with marked disapproval by his superior officers. How do we know?

From Quiz "Endeavour", Series One, Episode One: "Girl"

Answer: Morse is walking down the hall, hears what they say, and winces

The young man may face demotion, or even dismissal from the force, if he fails on this case. A lot had depended on his success. You have to feel for him when he cringes.

19. In series four, Inspector Thursday catches up with Joan. In an encounter with her boyfriend, what does he do?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: Gets in a fight

Endeavour sees them fighting, and pulls them apart. Ray threatens to call the police, but Thursday shouts, "I'm the law in these parts!"

20. Endeavour has to attend an autopsy. What happens to him at this event?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: He passes out

DCI Thursday is standing next to him. The other man catches Morse as he faints.

21. In the final episode of series four, "Harvest," Joan comes over to Endeavour's flat. What does he immediately notice about her?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: She has a bruise under her right eye

She was struck by Ray Morton. Endeavour demands to know where Morton is, but Joan does not tell him. He gives her money, and she leaves.

22. What relatively unusual thing does Endeavour do, contrary to the habits of his fellow police officers?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: Have people only address him by his last name

Most other officers go by their first names or a nickname. Apparently, Morse does not like his first name. Everybody just calls him Morse, even his girlfriends. In the third season, a woman at a party asks him what his first name means, and he says, "Embarrassed."

23. Morse goes next to visit the home of the Cartwrights. Helen is taking care of a baby, and her father, Dr. Frank, is getting ready to take a position at Stanford University in the United States. There is only one problem. What is that?

From Quiz "Endeavour", Series One, Episode One: "Girl"

Answer: The baby belongs to Pamela Walters

Earlier in the episode, we had hints of an affair by which Pamela conceived the child, a boy named Bobby. Helen wants to keep the baby, but Morse insists the child belongs with its mother. Indeed, Morse has called in an order which blocks Helen from trying to fly out of the country by way of any airport at all. Pamela is allowed to take custody of Bobby. The episode draws to a close. Oh - and the way we learned Endeavour's first name was not only from the title of the show, of course, but by the fact that he uses it as the word he types to see if an old typewriter is still working. The lowercase 'e' lands different, so he knows something is wrong.

24. In "Icarus," the finale of series five, what happens to Detective Constable George Fancy?

From Quiz "Endeavour" Miscellany

Answer: He is shot to death

Endeavour had been training the Detective Constable, and was none too pleased with the results. The massacre happens in a pub, where the officers had a shootout with members of criminal Eddie Nero's gang. Endeavour arrives at the scene and gives George CPR, to try to revive him, but it's no use. Shirley finds out when she walks into the station and asks a group of officers what's wrong. They don't respond. Then she realizes the truth. It's a very moving scene.

25. Endeavour and DCI Thursday stop by Thursday's house. What does the DCI take out of a bag?

From Quiz "Endeavour": "Pilot"

Answer: A sandwich

This is the first time we hear Fred mention the name of his wife: Win. It's short for Winifred. She is played by Caroline O'Neill.
