The victim was involved in a relationship with someone on the boat, and wanted to continue the affair publicly after they were out of the Navy. When the victim's determination to out them both wouldn't stop, the other man killed him from his paranoia of other people's homophobia. The time frame, 1973, involved a much more prejudiced time than now, and homosexuality was not as accepted as today.
