Throughout the town, the changed islanders commence their hunt for sustenance, attacking those who stayed home in their lust for blood and feeding them from their own to change them. While many break into the other houses and feast on the citizens, Ali and Ed Flynn watch on, at odds with their new natures. Sheriff Hassan, Sarah, Erin, Annie, Warren, and Leeza take refuge in Erin's home and watch from the windows, expecting the reborn townspeople to find them in due time. Hassan says he needs to go back to church; he needs to find his son.

Dr. Gunning, in her office, finds her mother awake and turns to find a radiant, almost younger-looking version of Mildred behind her. In his office, Sheriff Hassan deals with a visit from Bowl's mother. She's arrived on the island searching for her son, who's been missing for days. He assures her that he's doing his best to search for Bowl, but no one seems to know quite where he is. At St. Patrick's Church, Sturge revises the sign out front, informing the town that Masses will no longer be held during the day. The upcoming Good Friday Mass will be at 8pm; Easter Vigil will be at midnight. Wade and Sturge reassure the town that their priest will be just fine. The town is distracted, however, when Mildred Gunning is reintroduced to the town.

Erin visits Dr. Canning before school for a quick check-up on the baby. Excitedly, she hopes that today might be the day they get to see the baby on the ultrasound, but something is wrong. As Dr. Canning tries to hear the baby she finds that an ultrasound is necessary; it's because she's concerned. The reason is because there's no heartbeat-- there's nothing in her uterus. That Erin didn't feel or notice the miscarriage this late on in her pregnancy is abnormal. Erin knows she didn't miscarry, however. She couldn't have. Bev announces that Mass is cancelled for the day in light of Father Hill's illness. Joe, still at the priest's house after the Scarboroughs departed, still comes to terms with the fact that Father Hill is actually Father Pruitt, miraculously de-aged. Bev asks Joe if their Monsignor has been eating since she left for the night. Truth be told, Joe says, he doesn't know because he was too scared to check.

His parents prepare for his homecoming while his brother, Warren, heads out for the day. He's warned to be back for curfew.

Hassan asks Sarah for answers, but it appears there are none to be had; Sarah's samples couldn't make it to the mainland for testing since the ferry was inoperable. When the group realizes they have no cell service, Warren suggests they find his canoe and get away while they can. Erin realizes that the remaining boats on the island are operable, likely after some fixes, because the islanders will want to spread their gospel to the mainland. The contagion, however, needs to stay on Crockett's Island; if just one of them makes it to the mainland, it's over. Erin hands Hassan's gun back over and the group distributes knives for their own protection. Annie reminds them that they get back up, however. It's not a solution, but it may buy them a few more minutes. The whole thing might come down to seconds. Annie struggles to comprehend what's going on. Always believing there to be a Heaven, all of this is at odds with what she knows to be true. It's not about their going to Heaven though, Erin says. It's now about everyone else. That's when the molotov cocktail crashes in through the window. Bev and Sturge are outside, and hey know Erin's in there. Though Erin makes for the door, Annie stops her; this is her opportunity to help the ones she loves, and she'd like a word with Bev.

Once Erin gets the story out, Sarah asks her if she's ever heard of Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician who was in charge of two maternity wards. It was his idea to perform chlorine hand washes before births to lower death rates that was met with disdain from the medical community two decades before germ theory was created. He was committed to an asylum by another scientist. She tells his story because Erin might sound crazy, but there are other crazy things going on. Sarah tells Erin that what's going on with her mother is similarly crazy; no one would believe it. She takes Erin to her office and pours her mother's blood on a petri dish before placing it in the sun and they watch as it combusts. When Mildred comes down to investigate the smoke alarm, Erin sees that the once infirm woman is younger than she's ever seen her. At the Monsignor's house, Bev finds Father Hill mourning Riley; somehow he knew he was gone when he self-immolated. Bev suggests that perhaps Riley poisoned the well for Crockett's Island, and the wisest way to move forward is to determine who he may have spread the gospel to the previous evening. Judas, after all, was part of God's plan too. Tonight, she recommends, they share all that they have with their church, especially since it's Easter, a night of baptism.

Erin tries to outline Riley's whereabouts, indicating he should have been at AA with Joe, but he never came back after dinner with his parents.

Sheriff Hassan forces Warren out Erin's back window as Annie emerges out the front door, walking down the front porch to speak to Bev and Sturge, knife in hand. Bev assures that she would never hurt the children inside. In fact, they're already ready to be reborn. Their brief pain will be followed by immortality. Annie tells Bev what she needs to say-- Bev isn't a good person. God doesn't love Bev more than anyone else; she's not a hero and she's not a victim. He loves Bev as much as He loved Riley, even if that hurts Bev to hear. As Bev and Sturge move to check around the back of the house, Annie takes the knife to her own throat and slices across, distracting the two with her running blood long enough to let her son and the others get away. In the church, Father Hill muses on the Bible with Mildred holding his hand. He admits why he did it all-- it was her and Sarah. He put the Angel in the trunk and smuggled it back to Crockett's Island because he didn't want them to die. He didn't want the rest of them to die either, but it was all for them. He regrets not being able to tell his daughter the truth. It's all over though; they made their choices.

Leeza, given a cane by Dr. Gunning, finds herself able to walk to school with the other kids, and due to the nature of her miracle it's unsurprising that many of them walk with her specifically. Erin greets the kids as they head to school though she, too, can't explain what happened. In the evening, Ed Flynn, despite his bad back, dances with his wife in their living room. It's because of this that they don't hear Warren sneaking out at night, joining Lisa and running out into town. Riley stays awake, writing a list of names he plans to make amends to while staring at the spectre of the girl he killed. Instead, he decides to leave the house, joining Erin on her balcony for the evening. Leeza and Warren take the boat out into the water and kiss under the moonlight. By the next Mass, the majority of Crockett's Island shows up for the service. And the town experiences somewhat of a rebirth. At least for a short time.

He talks to her about the stars and the stories of old, powerful Gods in the sky, and he warns her that the truth he's going to tell her is unbelievable. All she needs to do is listen. She promises she will.

As Warren and Ooker prepare to join the congregation, Warren sees Father Hill filling the wine decanter with his own flask. For his sermon, Father Hill muses on the exaggerations held in life which differ from the exaggerations seen as truth by God-- things like the bread and wine of communion, the body and blood of Christ, which is not a metaphor. God's gifts, he says, are not abstract; they're as tangible as the ground beneath their feet even if people can not visualize them as such. God rarely gives miracles, but he frequently gives mysteries. Partway through his sermon, Father Hill experiences a short dizzy spell. Nonetheless, he remarks on the resurrection of Crockett's Island. It's a rebirth and a second chance, he says before he collapses.

He ended up moving to New York after this, applying for the NYPD and working his way up. He got married, had his kid, got promoted to help the FBI, and achieved his dreams, but when he started to see what was really going on behind the scenes, he was pushed back and surveilled by other cops for questioning the process. The NYPD wondered, what if he was a double agent? When his wife was diagnosed with cancer and passed away, he and Ali got as far away as they could, eventually arriving at Crockett's Island. He doesn't intimidate or intrude because he needs to belong...and still Bev Keene and others can't look past him. And yet Sarah wants him to investigate the church. Sheriff Hassan asks her to think about the third-hand source of her info-- Riley Flynn, who isn't the most trustworthy person on the island. All Sarah asks is if the sheriff carries a gun. He admits he doesn't.

Those questions brought him to the priesthood. God still has a plan, Father Hill said, and death isn't part of it anymore. Riley fell unconscious again, awakening only when the sun rose. Father Hill appeared to be waiting for him, seated as he normally was for their AA meetings. Terrified, Riley tried to escape out the front door but was forced back inside by the burning sunlight. He only took a seat when Father Hill promised to explain everything he could.

She claims it felt like a dream when she saw him at his bedside, but the truth, he says, is that it all feels that way for all of them. Crockett's Island awakens for Ash Wednesday eager to enjoy the town's potluck event and most of the citizens end up at St. Patrick's Church for Mass. Father Hill comments that it's a surprising day to see such a large crowd; the beginning of Lent must be attractive to people who seek to shed their sins and feel a sense of rebirth. God's first apostles were fishermen, he says, and Crockett's Island will find their bounty as long as they continue to come back to Mass on the regular. On this day, Riley's mother asks him to receive the blessing; he allows this one. As the town joins in for the Crock Potluck, Dr. Gunning sits with a girlfriend who convinces her to leave Crockett's Island. She's not sure quite how, however, since she believes it would not be good for her mother in her final days. Once her mother passes, she will leave. The two watch as Father Hill stares at them from afar and Sarah notes that back when she was young, the Monsignor used to do the same sort of thing, almost as if he knew her secret.

Father Hill started with Serenity since it applied profoundly to both of them-- "Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen. He started with the things they could not change. When he was younger, Father Hill was a pastor at a small community church when a young boy brought him a dying mouse in a shoebox. The boy asked him if the mouse could be resurrected in three days, like Jesus, and he took the mouse and, sure enough, gave it back to the boy three days later, healed, and let if go free before Mass. It didn't matter that Father Hill swapped out the mice, but it did give the boy evidence that God works in his ways. Riley was shocked that Father Hill could know this story particularly because the boy in it was him. When Riley came to terms with the fact that the man before him was Monsignor Pruitt as the form God believed to be his best, he was asked why he came back to the rec center at all. Riley admitted it was Joe Collie's sister and Father Hill apologized for the lie and sought forgiveness. Joe's death could not be changed, however. It was done and could not be undone just like what's happened to them had been done. Riley asked for the truth about what attacked him; it was an angel, Father Hill claimed.

Erin and Riley spend the entire day praying over their sorrows and Erin tries to come to terms with the fact that Riley doesn't believe in any of it. because he can't come to terms with the idea of a loving God. He doesn't believe her to be delusional or naive-- people want to find comfort and reason. Their talk leads to the idea of what happens when people die and Riley comments that all he knows is his body simply stops functioning. Five minutes after that, his brain cells start dying. But in those five minutes, perhaps his brain releases its last dump of DMT and he dreams bigger than he's ever dreamed before, all of his memories. It's the dream to end all dreams before his consciousness stops and his cells and pieces go on to feed life elsewhere. Erin struggles to speak for herself on the idea of what happens when she dies. Her child, however, knew nothing but dreaming. God just sent her down to Earth to sleep-- just a little nap-- before she was brought back to feel nothing but love for the first and only time. She never sinned and she will never be alone and she will be nothing but joy for eternity. Heaven, to Erin, is being loved and never being alone; it's why we endure what we do on Earth. Soon enough, she'll be there, in God's time, and she'll meet her daughter.

She asks if she can see the gun he shot her with, but he alleges he threw it into the bay; he couldn't stand to look at it after what happened. She explains that on that day when she was injured, she didn't feel it, but she knew something was wrong when her father was screaming like a wild animal. She tells Joe that she hates him, and has for years. She wants him to suffer for what he did and she wants him to beg for forgiveness so she can tell him no. But she didn't visit him for that. What she really came to do is forgive him. She's still angry with him, but it's different. If God can forgive him, then anyone can.

Talk of Riley's AA meetings comes up next, and Father Hill suggests that instead of going back to the mainland once a week, he would be happy to start an AA Chapter on the island to save him the trip. It could have a positive effect on the community. Erin is able to save Riley from the conversation, interrupting the two by complimenting Father Hill on his homily. The festivities come to an abrupt end when Joe's dog begins vomiting blood, dying in his hands after eating something dangerous and likely poisoned.

Riley has his first meal with his family on his first night back, and there's no shortage of questions for him. As part of the conditions of his parole, he reveals, he must return to the mainland for AA meetings once per week. Riley also discovers that Erin Greene, his old flame from high school, has returned to the island to take her mother's past job as a schoolteacher. He'll see her tomorrow, his mother says, at church. Riley's hesitant to this. Things have changed, he says. Neither of his parents will hear this though, especially with the Monsignor returning from his two-week pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Warren thinks it's weird to have had the community pitch in for the pilgrimage, especially with the Monsignor's old age. He's been acting weird, he claims, appearing all over the island in the middle of the night wearing his fedora and long coat. Riley's father, not speaking up until Riley and Warren crack jokes about being altar boys, chastises his returned son for his refusal to repent for what he's done. He'll go to church with the family, like it or not, every Sunday and he can consider it a condition of his parole.

As Warren and Leeza race across the island and find the shored canoe they listen to the crackling flames and explosions. Leeza says goodbye to her parents and says a prayer as they load into the boat, asking God for them to find peace. Everyone in their families is gone. They can only leave while they still can. At the rec centre, Bev commences a headcount and speaks to the townspeople, suggesting that many of them could have done more, if they hadn't, by coming to Mass. They lost their families and friends, but anyone who did not make the effort to pray amongst the congregation is not welcome. Father Hill, standing at the door to the church, welcomes him in instead, saying that if no one is welcome then it isn't God's house. As he heads inside, he finds his daughter covering the pews in gasoline.

Father Hill returns home and refills his decanter of communion wine, struggling to keep his hunger at bay. He heads to his balcony and screams for his guardian angel, reciting prayers before heading back inside and chugging the remainder of the wine. The priest asks him to come in nonetheless even though he's quite unwell, and it's then that Joe spies the newspaper clipping on the wall, remarking that Father Hill looks uncannily like Monsignor Pruitt. Before Joe can leave, Father Hill motions for a hug and, in their embrace, the priest accidentally drops Joe, banging his head on the corner of a table. Instead of calling for help, Father hill gorges himself on Joe's blood, regaining his strength through the unnatural sustenance.

As the churchgoers take their seats, Father Hill celebrates their holy day and suggests that they are all in the beginning of a new era. While they will be celebrating the resurrection, they will be doing so more than anyone ever has. He begins with the admission of his sin-- he's lied to them all. He didn't come to Crockett's Island to fill in for Monsignor Pruitt and the Monsignor has not been in a hospital recovering from illness; he's perfectly healthy. He was the first to be healed amongst them and he stands before them seeking forgiveness. An Angel of the Lord bestowed upon him a cure for his ill health and he has brought the Angel to them. They will all be tested like Jesus. They will endure death. And they will fear it but they will overcome and be risen again. Father Hill calls Sturge forth as Bev retrieves a chalice from the adjacent room, looking on at the cups of Compound 1080 awaiting their drinkers. When the priest gives the communion to Sturge to drink, it takes only moments before it affects him. He dies in Father Hill's arms while the church watches and the priest begs them to wait. Sheriff Hassan grabs Ali's hands and makes for the door, but the way is blocked. The Angel has arrived.

Riley and Erin wake up the morning after their talk and Riley admits to having his dream on the water once again. This time was different-- he was on the water waiting for the sunrise, but this time Erin was in the boat with him. He asks if she'd like him to walk her to Mass, but she plans on heading to the mainland for a second opinion. She does invite him, however, to come back to her house in the evening. Sheriff Hassan, meanwhile, is awake while Ali prepares to attend Mass for the first time. He understands that his son is curious and he will not stop him, but he reminds him that they already have God. While Erin heads to the mainland, the people of Crockett's Island make their way to Mass to seat themselves and...wait. When Father Hill doesn't show up, Bev walks to his house and once again lets herself in, this time to find the priest laying in the corner, having gorged himself on Joe's blood. She calmly tells him that he needs to clean up and get to the church. When he shows her that he can't pass into the sunlight, she changes her plan.

Erin confides in Riley that Bev's particular brand of self-righteousness made her deeply uncomfortable. He, similarly, is having trouble dealing with people. Since he struggles with making amends to people he's harmed, he takes Father Hill's advice to write letters instead-- lots of them. He claims he's a coward, but Erin tells him not to think that way. At the Gunning household, Mildred seems to regain clarity of thought and mind, seeing her daughter and understanding that a darkness seemed to be hovering over her. She asks when she was moved into the living room. Riley, meanwhile, heads to his AA meeting at the rec center and finds that Joe has joined the group on account of Leeza's visit. Father Hill nearly has to force Riley to say the right things just so Joe can hear them. After they leave, they don't notice his awful coughing fit, bringing the priest to his knees in the empty hall.

Riley visits the island's rec center alone to meet with Father Hill for his AA meeting and it is, initially, very awkward. Neither is altogether sure what to talk about, so Riley talks about Crockett's Island and the nefarious way it's been built up. When the island got their settlement offer from the oil company, Bev Keane was particularly problematic as she convinced the townspeople to sign for the money, but also urged them to give back to the church, so when Monsignor Pruitt fell ill, it went into her hands to spend. It's why the island has the rec center. Their chat wraps back around to church and the faith and Riley's decision not to practice. It all depends on how Riley deals with his suffering and guilt, Father Hill says-- it can be empowering. The version that Riley is when he's drunk, however, is bad, according to Riley. He killed someone, and he needs to be blamed, he believes. And God kind of let it happen, and that's why he can't square away the faith side of it. And the awful suffering faced by the people on Crockett's Island is a problem, especially when they believe that suffering to be a gift from God. Father Hill suggests that God doesn't negate personal accountability. He'll find the love in it, even if people have their problems.

As the sun rises on Sunday on Crockett's Island, there is a red sky overhead. The town prepares for the coming storm, but first, they head to St. Patrick's Church for Mass. Warren and Ooker prepare for the ceremony to find that someone has already done their job for them. It's then that they meet their new priest. The town meets the man moments later, singing their hymns, and many of them are caught off-guard by the new face in town. He introduces himself nervously as Father Paul Hill and claims that he has been sent by the Diocese to fill in for the Monsignor for a few weeks as he has taken ill and gone to a hospital on the mainland. He reassures everyone that it's temporary and that the Monsignor will be just fine. The ceremony proceeds as normal and, on his father's wishes, Riley refuses to join in the Communion, having not partaken in confession for years. Father Hill meets with most of the attendees of Mass after the ceremony, introducing himself to Mayor Scarborough, his wife, and daughter, and to the Flynns. Despite Riley's reluctance, Father Hill suggests they'll get along well. Jesus, after all, made friends of those who were not quite in a state of grace.

When Erin emerges and flicks open her lighter, it's a moment too late. The Angel swoops in and grabs her, pinning her to the ground in the cemetery and beginning to feed on her. Ali is the one to pick up the dropped lighter. As Bev asks the boy to hand over the lighter, with the gun still trained on his father, Ali tosses it inside. The building goes up in flames as Bev fires a shot into Hassan's stomach. Erin, still pinned to the ground, manages to reach into her pocket and grab the last weapon at her disposal-- the knife from her butcher's block. As the creature feeds it doesn't notice as she begins to tear into its wings. When it finally leaves her, it realizes that it struggles to ascend into the sky. As the townspeople disperse, realizing that there's nowhere left to turn and nowhere to hide from the sun, some can only attempt to forgive themselves for what they've done.

As the Angel enters St. Patrick's Church, the people of Crockett's Island recoil in terror and Father Hill urges them not to be afraid. The creature stands before them at the altar and spreads its wings as Sturge rises from death, taking to his feet and embracing Father Hill, resurrected. The Scarboroughs take to their feet as well, handing cups of Compound 1080 to the congregation alongside Bev. Most of them already have the Angel's blood inside them; all they need to do is open their minds and their hearts and take one leap of faith. Sheriff Hassan attempts to drag his son from the room, but Ali resists, taking his place by Father Hill's side. To the surprise of the townspeople, the Sheriff draws a gun and fires it into the air but he's taken down by the other members of the congregation and restrained. Bev steps forth, thanking Ali for setting an example in front of the others and placing a cup into his hands. While his father cries, Ali takes the drink, chooses God, and dies in Father Hill's arms. The other townspeople follow suit while a small group tries to convince them not to drink the poison. Mildred, grabbing the discarded gun off the ground, fires it at Father Hill, hitting him in the head before the Angel leaps forth, grabs her, and flies off into the night. All the while, the congregation dies to be reborn again.
