From Quiz ""Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)""

Robin of Sherwood Trivia Questions

1. "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer" begins with what event?

From Quiz
"Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Loxley being attacked

As a boy, Robin loses his home and his father Ailric to the Sheriff. Instead of rushing in on horseback, soldiers slowly approach on rafts, adding a different sort of menace: though the men are slow to arrive, the inhabitants know the men cannot be stopped when they land. After Loxley is burned, Robin then lives with the miller, whose young son Much becomes a brother to him, though he continues to call himself Robin of Loxley.

2. How many Merries are now living in Sherwood forest, excluding Marian?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: 6

It's Robin Hood (Robert of Huntington), Little John, Will Scarlet, Much, Nasir and Brother Tuck.

3. When Little John was asked by Robert of Huntington why he believed in Robin, what was his answer?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: "Because the fire burned bright in him, and for a while it warmed us all."

But now, according to Little John, he's gone, and the fire went with him. That's why John refuses to join Robert and Tuck at first.

4. What is special about the arrows that are shot in the air (and go down in a lake) by Robin's men in the beginning of this episode?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: They are burning

Each time the Merries lose someone, they are doing that rite in order to honor them and keep them in their memories.

5. Why are Robin and Much arrested in "Robin Hood at the Sorcerer"?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Poaching the King's deer

Many Robin Hood stories have a similar event. In the dungeon, they meet Will Scarlet, who joins them in Sherwood after their escape. Two other men, Tom and Dickon, also join them but are killed at the end of the episode. Writer Richard Carpenter later regretted killing them off because he liked them so much. The dungeon has an eternal lodger, an old man who won't escape with the others because he can't leave his pet rat, Arthur.

6. "For the sake of everything we've meant to each other, you must care. Because that way, you keep alive all we've believed in. And I can't die then, can I?" Whose voice do we hear?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: Michael Praed

Michael Praed left Robin of Sherwood at the end of the second series, and we see him talk to Marian in that flashback.

7. In "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer", who calls on Robin to act for him?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Herne the Hunter

Robin meets an older man wearing fur and a giant stag head who calls on him to help the poor. Interestingly, the man himself is not the god Herne the Hunter. He is an ordinary man who, when possessed by "the Horned One", puts on the deer head and fur robe to become Herne. He sends Robin, and occasionally other members of his gang, visions and signs. He's even wounded in one episode. Herne would probably have been unknown to people in medieval England, as the first written account of him comes from Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". They would have been more familiar with the Celtic god Cernunnos, a horned deity often associated with nature.

8. Who wrote this episode according to the opening credits?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: Richard "Kip" Carpenter

Richard "Kip" Carpenter even invented and developed the whole series. He also wrote Catweazle. Anthony Horowitz, the second main writer of the series, wrote the episodes "The Inheritance", "Cromm Cruac", "Adam Bell", "The Pretender" and "The Sheriff of Nottingham".

9. "Just as I begun to think it was all over, it's not over. It'll never be over." Who says that?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: The Sheriff of Nottingham

After discovering that all the Merries managed to escape, he realizes that there's another Hooded Man, seeming to take Robin Hood's place.

10. What is the name of Robin of Loxley's sword?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Albion

Albion is an old name for England or Great Britain, so it's a fitting name for a sword wielded by an English mythical hero. Herne refers to it as one of the swords of Wayland, the others of which appear in later episodes. The three incorrect answers are also fictional swords. Sikanda is a sword made of light and given to Bastian when he enters Fantastica in "The Neverending Story". Dyrnwyn is Prince Gwydion's sword in the children's series "The Chronicles of Prydain" and also appears in Celtic mythology. Gram comes from Norse mythology, particularly the "Volsunga Saga", where is it placed in a tree by Odin, drawn by Sigmund, shattered, and reforged by Sigurd.

11. Who is "The King's Devil"?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: a torturer

Marian has sent for Robert to warn him that the Sheriff has a plan which could unmask him. She heard that from her servant who has a brother who works in Nottingham Castle.

12. What's the name of the village where they're gonna find Will?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: Lichfield

Little John thinks the village's name started with an "L" and comes up with suggestions like Lincoln, Leicester and York(!).

13. Who shoots the seventh arrow at the lake?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: The Earl's son

It's the first appearance of Jason Connery, who takes over the role of Robin Hood.

14. In "Robin Hood at the Sorcerer", which member of Robin Hood's gang is introduced while under a spell?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Little John

Belleme, the sorcerer of the title, bewitches John and sends him to kill Robin. John meets Robin on a river with a quarterstaff, supplying this series' version of the legendary fight. While appearing in one episode, Allan does not join the group, as the production team felt that the actor's performance was not good enough for him to join the main cast.

15. Apart from warning Robert, Marian has another reason why she wants to see him. Which one?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: She wants to give him Albion.

Marian tells Robert that he's Robin's successor, Herne's son. But Robert doesn't take the sword, not yet. He says: "I can't accept it. One day perhaps, when I'm worth it."

16. What is Will Scarlet doing now since the group split up?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: He runs an alehouse with his brother

When the Merries find Will, he's completely drunk and willing to fight Robert for disturbing him in his booze.

17. What's the name of the mad magician who works for Owen of Clun?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: Gulnar

Gulnar, who is played by Richard O'Brien, also appears in the episodes "Cromm Cruac" and "Time of the Wolves". Richard O'Brien is, by the way, the man who wrote "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

18. How do Robin and Marion meet in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: He hides in her room while running from Gisbourne.

He runs into her room while she's in bed, but she doesn't cry out because she senses that Guy will kill Robin if he finds him. The two are immediately taken with one another. The staircase outside Marion's room resides in Wells Cathedral. Apparently it was so stunning that the production team shot there twice, for it appears in a separate location, an abbey, in "The Swords of Wayland". I can't say I blame them for using it twice, as it is a unique and beautiful staircase.

19. Why can't Marian join the Merries?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: Her father gave his word when she was pardoned.

Robert tells her he doesn't understand why she wouldn't go back to Sherwood, because he knows that her pardon was bought. But she replies: "Do you blame him? I'm his only child!"

20. There's a great fistfight between Will and Robert which lasts for about almost ten minutes and where they are fighting and wrestling through the whole village. Who wins the fight?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: No-one

No-one wins because Little John interrupts them and escapes with them from Lichfield in order to get rid of Sir Guy of Gisburne. By the way, in the audio commentary on the DVD, Jason Connery tells that the shooting of the fight took the whole day. And according to Kip Carpenter, the writer, it's based on the film "The Quiet Man"

21. How is Lord Abbot Hugo de Rainault related to the Sheriff of Nottingham?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: He's his brother

Hugo de Rainault is played by Philip Jackson. As Marian's ward, he is the one who intends to send her off to a convent so the church (i.e. himself) can get her father's lands.

22. What is the reward for winning the archery contest in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: A silver arrow

The silver arrow is the same that the Sheriff kills Robin's father to obtain early in the episode. Robin disguises himself as an old man to compete. Following the legend, he splits his opponents arrow and wins back the silver one.

23. Who is convinced that Robert of Huntington is the new Robin Hood?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: Sir Guy of Gisburne

The Sheriff isn't sure enough and doesn't want to accuse the son of one of the most powerful men in England to be Robin Hood, because, according to him, he and Gisburne wouldn't have time to pack their bags if they were proved wrong. But the Sheriff hasn't completely ignored Gisburne's suspicions and has sent a spy to watch Marian.

24. What is Gulnar, the mad magician, handing over to Owen of Clun?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: a small container with a magic potion

According to Gulnar, the magic potion would make Marian more than willing when Lord Owen of Clun finally would marry her.

25. By what name is Jason Connery introducing himself to the Sheriff of Nottingham?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: Robert of Huntington

There are actually two different legends of Robin Hood and after Michael Praed left the series, writer Richard Carpenter used the second version for Connery which says that Robin Hood was an Earl's son.

26. How does Robin defeat Belleme in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: He stabs him with the silver arrow.

While pretending to be under Belleme's influence to kill Marion, he instead kills Belleme with the silver arrow. Belleme returns to life in "The Enchantment", but he is not killed and is not brought up in the series afterwards.

27. What's the name of the man the Sheriff has sent in order to watch Marian because he thinks she may meet with one of the outlaws?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "The Power Of Albion"

Answer: Oliver

He has sent Oliver to Leaford Grange because he "knows where her heart lies".

28. What's the original name of Will Scarlet's character?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 2)"

Answer: Will Scathlock

In fact, Will changed his name from Scathlock to Scarlet when he became an outlaw, but changed it back twice, namely in "Herne's Son (Part 2)" and in "Cromm Cruac".

29. What's the name of Marian's father?

From Quiz "Robin of Sherwood": "Herne's Son (Part 1)"

Answer: Sir Richard of Leaford

That character is played by George Baker. We later learn that Marian was pardoned after Robin's death because Sir Richard fought his way back to favour on King John's side.

30. Which Saracen joins the group in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

From Quiz "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"

Answer: Nasir

He's played by Mark Ryan, who was a stunt man at the time of filming. This series was the first Robin Hood story to include a Saracen character. Nasir was supposed to die at the end of the episode, but the producers liked Ryan so much that they wrote him in as a supporting character. As Ryan could not act, he got no lines until the last episode of series 1, "The King's Fool". In story terms, perhaps Nasir cannot speak English well or at all when he joins the group and speaks more as he learns it. In reality, Ryan got more lines as he took acting lessons. The other three options are Saracen characters from other Robin Hood media: Djaq is from the 2006-2009 BBC series "Robin Hood", Azeem comes from 1991 movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and Kemal is found in the show "The New Adventures of Robin Hood" (1997-1999).
