Steptoe and Son Trivia Questions

1. What is Albert's middle name?

From Quiz
The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: Ladysmith

We find this out in series five, when they go to the mobile x-ray, and in the second movie when Albert's middle name is written on his coffin! The actor Wilfred Brambell was not the first choice to play Albert Steptoe. Wilfred Brambell was born in Dublin in 1912 and began acting from an early age in Ireland. His professional acting career began in the 1950's playing (ironically) old men, despite only being in his forties!

2. What did the H stand for in Harry H Corbett?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: Henything

There was already a Harry Corbett in the acting profession, so Harry H Corbett had to make his name different. Once when asked what the H stood for he replied 'Henything!'

3. What is the address of the Steptoe family?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: 26A Oil Drum Lane

This is mentioned in the second movie when Harold gives Doctor Popplewell directions. The first episode of 'Steptoe and Son' was originally a pilot episode written as a one-off show for the Comedy Playhouse by genius writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. After the success and the popularity of 'The Offer', the BBC commissioned more episodes to be made, so within six months a full series was created.

4. In the episode 'The Desperate Hours', two prisoners escaped from Wormwood Scrubs. Which actor played the younger escapee, Johnny?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: Leonard Rossiter

Two escaped prisoners from Wormwood Scrubs tried to hold up Albert and Harold because they thought they might be able to steal from them, they didn't realise that Steptoe and his son had nothing to steal!

5. What was the address of their rag and bone yard and home?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: 26 Oil Drum Lane, Shepherd's Bush

They regularly went totting up the Goldhawk Road in Shepherd's Bush.

6. Which series of "Steptoe and Son" is the first to release colour episodes?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: Series six

Unfortunately only two of the episodes from series six exist, these are "Come Dancing" and "Cuckoo In The Nest". At the turn of the 1970's, the BBC demanded that filming should be done in colour due to the strong, increasing competition from ITV and their full-colour comedies. Series five was actually recorded in colour, but they were never released.

7. What was the name of their horse?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: Hercules

Quite often, the horse was better fed than Harold was!

8. When is Albert's birthday?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: 25th January

We discover Albert's birthday in series two, in the "Sixty-Five Today" episode. Albert is upset at nobody remembering his birthday, but Harold has remembered but pretends not to! "Sixty-Five Today" was first aired on 24th January 1963. A fan of the series would point out that in the series, Albert's birthday was the 25th January. But in "Steptoe And Son Ride Again", his birthday is May 10th!

9. In which episode did we actually see Harold waiting in church to get married?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: "And Afterwards At..."

Hooray! Harold finally thinks he is getting married. But it doesn't last forever. His bride actually walks out mid-service because of cold feet so he never ends up marrying her. This was the first episode to kick off series four, which also introduced us to the rest off the money-grabbing Steptoe family! Series four was definitely going to be the last in the series, partly due to Wilfred Brambell deciding to try his luck at Broadway. He played a part in the musical "Kelly". The show was cancelled after one performance.

10. Name the '60s sex-siren who seduced Harold in the film 'Steptoe and Son Rides Again'?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: Diana Dors

Harold was asked into a widow's house to clear out her late husband's things. As the widow seduced Harold on one bed, he was horrified to find that her late husband was laid out on the next bed!

11. In the episode 'Without Prejudice', what is the main cause for the Steptoes moving out of Oil Drum Lane?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: The whole house was leaking

A great episode from series 6 which saw the Steptoes moving into a nice house in a posh, quiet neighbourhood. It does look promising for them until the neighbours realise what might be moving in... This excellent episode from series six was shown on 30th November 1970. A great piece of writing which shown how the Steptoe family was treated in higher class areas involving members of the Residents' Association, led by actor Norman Bird.

12. In the episode 'Men of Letters', what was Albert's contribution to the Parish Church newsletter?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: A crossword

As we find out in this episode Albert can only spell swearwords, so his crossword was made up entirely of swearwords. Consequently, the vicarage was raided and all the copies of the newsletter were confiscated.

13. In the episode 'The Economist', what does Harold buy 4000 sets of?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: Teeth

One of Harold's bright ideas! From series one. Harold places an ad in the Times for anybody wanting to buy a set of false dentures. No surprise how many replies he gets! This episode was shown on 26th June 1962 and was the first to feature regular 'Steptoe' actor Frank Thornton, who played the first of five performances in 'Steptoe and Son'. Thornton was best known as playing Captain Peacock from the series 'Are You Being Served'.

14. Back to the film 'Steptoe and Son Rides Again', who was the 'Godfather of Shepherd's Bush'?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: Frankie Barrow

Frankie Barrow was a debt collector who terrorised Shepherd's Bush with his two heavies.

15. Harold manages to put his dad in an old people's home. But what does Harold plan on doing while his dad is there?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: Sail round the world

Harold puts his dad in a home at the start of series three. He wants to sail around the world with five women and four other men. Which Albert will unlikely take to the idea! Series three aired the last episode in February 1964. This is around the time that Wilfred Brambell decided to leave 'Steptoe' behind and try acting on Broadway.

16. Albert and Harold went to France to visit the battlegrounds. Who played the French man with whom Albert started an argument?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

On the aeroplane out to France Albert argued with a French man and an American man about who came into the war when. On arriving in France, they (Albert and Harold) were immediately deported back to England!

17. What were the names of both horses?

From Quiz The Best Of "Steptoe and Son"

Answer: Delilah and Hercules

The beginning of series five was an episode all about the death of Hercules (which is a risky move in comedy). Harold then buys a horse and needs his father's help because he thinks the new horse is ill, but little did Harold know he actually bought a horse in the middle of giving birth! Delilah also starred in the first movie of "Steptoe and Son". Harry H Corbett also played a character in "Carry on Screaming" in which he plays a policeman. A strange coincidence is that he also drives a horse and cart in the film.

18. In the episode 'Oh, What a Beautiful Mourning', there was only one item/set of value left in the house of Albert's late brother. What was it?

From Quiz Steptoe and Son

Answer: A porcelain figurine

At the end of this episode Albert hides the figurine under his hat so that no-one else can get it
