Downstairs Upstairs Trivia Questions

1. Which character is first seen on screen in the opening episode, 'On Trial'?

From Quiz
What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah (Pauline Collins) was originally known as something else - the rather grand-sounding Clemence. A romantic, wayward young woman, she is deeply unhappy when Lady Marjorie (Rachel Gurney) declares Sarah is a more suitable name for a servant. However, she soon learns to hold her tongue - at least on this occasion...

2. "Upstairs, Downstairs" told the stories of the Bellamy family (upstairs) and their servants (downstairs). At the beginning of the series, who lived upstairs?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Richard, Marjorie, Elizabeth, James

Lady Marjorie and Richard Bellamy were the heads of the household. James and Elizabeth were their grown children. Rose and Edward were the parlourmaid and the footman. Hazel, Richard's secretary, and Georgina, Richard's ward, both joined the series in the third season. Virginia Hamilton first appeared in season four, and moved into the Bellamy household in season five. Sir Geoffrey Dillon was the family solicitor.

3. And who wrote 'On Trial'?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Fay Weldon

This episode was originally aired on British TV on 10 October 1971. Shaughnessy and Bingham both wrote a number of episodes, but not until later in the series.

4. The series was based on an idea by two British actresses, Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins. What roles did they play in the show?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Jean Marsh was Rose. Eileen Atkins did not have an acting part.

In the original concept, both Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins were to play maids. The show was conceived of as a comedy with a cook who drank too much and a butler who took advantage of his employers. When "Upstairs, Downstairs" began filming, Eileen Atkins was playing Queen Victoria in a stage play, and was not free to participate in a television series. Lady Marjorie was played by Rachel Gurney.

5. How many episodes from the first series were filmed in black and white?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: 6

During filming, a technician's strike was taking place, so a decision was made to record the first six episodes in black and white. When the industrial action was finally resolved, the first episode was filmed (again) in colour. Two versions of 'On Trial' exist, in order for broadcasters to have the option of dropping the black and white episodes - 'Sarah Stays', if the black and white episodes are being used, and 'Sarah Goes', if only the programmes in colour are shown.

6. The Bellamys lived at 165 Eaton Place. In what city?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: London

Following the success of "Upstairs, Downstairs", a U.S. producer tried to recreate the concept with a show called "Beacon Hill" set in Boston. It didn't work.

7. Where did James Bellamy (Simon Williams) attend school?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Eton

This little fact is revealed in an episode from series two, 'A Pair of Exiles'.

8. Which episode from series two features Mr Hudson (Gordon Jackson) trying to impress his brother, provoking suspicion from the Bellamys?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: 'Your Obedient Servant'

The other episodes can also be seen in the second series.

9. Angela Baddeley played Mrs. Bridges, the cook. Who played Mr. Bridges?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: No one

Simon Williams played James Bellamy. Gordon Jackson played Mr. Hudson. Lloyd Bridges did not appear in "Upstairs, Downstairs". Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Bridges had worked together for a long time and sometimes acted like parents to the younger servants. It is not clear whether there ever was a Mr. Bridges. Although in an early episode Mrs. Bridges once referred to 'Bridges' as being 'taken' (i.e. died) when they were both in service to Lady Marjorie at Southwold, Mr. Hudson always maintained that 'Mrs' was a courtesy title due to her position.

10. The Bellamys' dinner guest in the episode "Guest of Honor" was the king! Which king honored Eaton Place with his presence?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Edward VII

The series took place from 1908 to 1930, during the reigns of Edward VII and George V. This episode took place in the second season of the show. King Edward's visit was upstaged by the arrival of Sarah's baby the same evening!

11. Why does Hazel Forrest (Meg Wynn Owen) become a visitor to 165 Eaton Place?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Richard employs her as his typist (he's writing a political biography)

Like many others, Hazel soon finds herself the object of James' affections, but unusually, this turns out to be a rather respectable affair! However, their marriage doesn't take place until subsequent episodes. When Hazel is first introduced, she is simply a middle-class girl, working as a secretary - there is nothing to suggest she is soon to become lady of the household. Georgina Worsley (Lesley-Anne Down) didn't arrive until later in the series.

12. Lady Marjorie died in the third season. How did she die?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: She was a passenger on the Titanic and drowned.

Lady Marjorie's maid, Miss Roberts, was also on the Titanic, but was rescued and able to return to Eaton Place. Hazel died of influenza at the end of the fourth season.

13. Which character makes a dramatic return in series three, which ends with Edward (Christopher Beeny) almost getting his throat cut?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Alfred

Alfred (George Innes) - a troubled character last seen in series one - is hiding from the police when he arrives back at Eaton Place. Rose agrees to protect him, and allows him to take refuge in the basement. When it is discovered by the household that he is wanted for murder, he decides to take drastic action...

14. Following the death of Lady Marjorie, whom did Richard marry?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Virginia Hamilton

Richard's son James married Hazel. Lady Prudence was a good friend of the family, but she wasn't romantically involved. Richard proposed to Virginia at the end of season 4. The wedding took place off-screen, between seasons 4 and 5.

15. Who is Gregory Wilmot (Keith Barron)?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: An Australian sheep farmer who becomes engaged to Rose

Gregory first appears in 'A Perfect Stranger' from series three. He enjoys a short romance with Rose and suggests she emigrates to Australia with him. Having accepted his proposal, Rose suddenly loses her nerve at the last minute and turns her back on him - she grows to bitterly regret her decision. In series four, Gregory finds himself back on British shores and, this time, Rose is determined to get her happy ending. Sadly, the year's 1916 and the 'war to end of all wars' is raging...

16. Which character never married?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Rose

Rose turned down a proposal of marriage from an Australian sheep farmer, and opted to stay in service at Eaton Place. Elizabeth Bellamy married poet Lawrence Kirbridge, but the marriage was not a happy one. She eventually left him and moved to America. Daisy, the parlourmaid, married the footman, Edward. After a period of living on their own, they returned to service with the Bellamys. Georgina married the Marquis of Stockbridge at the end of the series.

17. Eaton Place opens its doors to a set of troublesome refugees at the beginning of series four. Where are they from?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Belgium

Although the staff are hostile to their non-English speaking guests at the beginning, their attitude soon softens once Georgina acts as translator - the refugees' story is more horrific than anyone could imagine.

18. "Upstairs, Downstairs" aired for five seasons with a total of 68 episodes. Which character was present in the most episodes?

From Quiz "Upstairs, Downstairs"

Answer: Hudson&Mr Hudson&Mr. Hudson&Mister Hudson&Angus Hudson

Gordon Jackson portrayed Mr. Hudson in 60 episodes. David Langton, as Richard Bellamy, was next with 56 episodes. Rose was in 54 episodes, and Mrs. Bridges appeared in 52. In the United States only four seasons were aired. The first U.S. season had three episodes from the British season 1 and ten from British season 2. The "missing episodes" were shown in the U.S. in 1988, more than ten years after the series had ended. (The DVD and video collections available in the U.S. do have all five complete seasons of the series.) I hope you enjoyed this quiz. Much of the background information came from www.updown.org.uk

19. Which staff member does Hazel criticise for spreading anti-German feeling in 'The Beastly Hun'?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Mr Hudson

The dispute leads to an electrifying scene between mistress and employee. Distraught at being too old to enlist, but always respectful of authority, Hudson reluctantly agrees to Hazel's wishes. Gordon Jackson rightly won great acclaim for this episode, including an Emmy award.

20. During World War One, which member of Eaton Place trains as a VAD nurse?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Georgina

"Upstairs, Downstairs" was reasonably good at showing the role of women during this period - Rose becomes a bus conductor to help with the war effort and Ruby takes on the dangerous task of working in a munitions factory.

21. Series Five takes place during which period?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: 1919 - 1930

John Hawkesworth, the show's producer, decided that 1930 was a good year to finish the programme - rapid changes to the economy and society at that time was leading to the demise of Victorian households like Eaton Place. The entire five series took place over the period 1903 - 1930.

22. James attempts to settle into a new occupation in episode 'A Place in the World'. What does he decide to do?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: He puts himself forward as a political candidate

This is the second episode in the last series.

23. The final episode sees two of the most-loved characters, Mr Hudson and Mrs Bridges, finally wed and move away to run a guest house together. Which younger member of staff goes with them?

From Quiz What do you know about "Upstairs, Downstairs"?

Answer: Ruby

Edward and Daisy became sweethearts just before the first world war, marry during the conflict and leave Eaton Place to join the household of Marquess and Marchioness of Stockbridge. Having inherited a large sum of money, poor Rose allows James to invest it in the stockmarket - only to lose it all in the wall street crash. Instead of becoming a 'lady of leisure', Rose remains in the Bellamys' service. Ruby, simple but oddly endearing, is the only one of them to move away with the Hudsons.
